Joseph’s 12 brothers sold him into slavery. Joseph is taken to Egypt. In obedience to his Lord, Joseph rises to greatness next to Pharaoh. A famine smites the land of Canaan. Egypt is spared by the dream revealed by God to Pharaoh that Joseph interpreted. Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt looking for food. Joseph tests his brothers and gets them to bring the younger brother Benjamin to Egypt. Joseph later reveals his identity to his brothers. All of Jacob’s family is united in Egypt where they live and the generations of the 12 tribes thrive until another Pharaoh rises up that did not know Joseph. The children of Israel are sed as slaves by the Egyptians for over 400 years. God rises up a prophet and deliverer called Moses. He brings them out of Egypt after God sends the plagues upon Egypt to set the people free. The people wander in the wilderness for 40 years before entering into the Promised Land of Canaan. Because of their disobedience the older generations die in the wilderness, only their children under the age of 20 could enter into the Promised Land. The ones to enter first into the land were Joshua and Caleb.
There was no king to rule Israel at this time so the Judges judged Israel these were Deborah and Barak, Gideon, Jephthah, Samson, Micah, and Benjamin. The last judge and prophet was Samuel. God commanded Samuel to anoint Saul as first king of Israel. Because of Saul’s sin and disobedience God commanded Samuel to anoint another king. God instructs Samuel to go to Jesse and select the future king from Jesse’s sons. Samuel anoints young David to be the future king to replace King Saul. David serves under Saul and Saul plots to kill David. David aids Saul’s army to defeat the Philistines and their champion, the giant, Goliath of Gath. David marries Saul’s daughter Michal. Later King Saul and his sons die in battle. David becomes king of Israel. It’s through his son Nathan continues the royal line to Jesus Christ.

Key scriptures: Chronicles 2:1-2; 2:3-17 (from Judah to David); Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:1-2; 21-38.
There are two distinctive genealogies that are written in the New Testaments of Matthew 1 and Luke 3:23-38, which are the record of Jesus Christ lineage. It seems anomalous that these genealogies appear in the scriptures and why the authors wrote them. As you examine both of them you will that the names are different. For many years there I had been curious over the two different genealogies. The one in Matthew 1 is the genealogy from Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. It uses the word ‘begat’ which means ‘born of,’ and that makes Joseph the heir from the line of King David. If Jesus came from this line it would not line up with scripture through the line of Joseph. Joseph came from the genealogical line of King Jeconiah, which God cursed and spoke through the prophet Jeremiah that none of Jeconiah’s descendants would ever sit on the throne of David as King of Israel (Matthew 1:11-12; Jeremiah 22:29-30). Jesus was not affected by this curse, because his physical Jewish descent came from David through his mother, Mary who conceived him by the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit as foretold by the prophets that Jesus (Yeshua) would be the Son of God (Psalm 2:6-8; Isaiah 7:14). The genealogical line in Luke 3:21-38 belongs to the Virgin Mary. In the Jesus’ time the husband of the wife was named called ‘son of,’ or as to say ‘son-in-law of.’ In the first line of the Luke 3 genealogy it says, Jesus began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli (the father of Mary) (Matthew 13:55; John 6:42). In Matthew 1:16, Joseph’s father was Jacob. It appears these are entirely two different names that’s a fact. I had wondered for a long time why there were two different genealogies written in St. Matthew and St. Luke. Then it came to me that it was to prove that Jesus was not the son of a human father, but indeed the Son of God, in spite of the false stories handed down from the Gemara that Jesus’ mother had relations with a Roman soldier and conceived Jesus in that manner. The scriptures say that Mary was a virgin at the time of the annunciation by the angel, Gabriel that she would conceive God’s Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. The prophet Isaiah supports this as he foretold that a virgin would conceive and bring forth a Son (Isaiah 7:14), and of His Kingdom there would be no end.
The family tree of Joseph and Mary are both unique as they tell a story of redemption through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Both genealogies connect an intricate pattern of the mysterious beauty of God’s character. These are no ordinary genealogies. It details the ancestors of Jesus’ legal father, Joseph, who is identified as the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born (Matthew 1:6). If you ever examine old genealogy charts and records you will rarely see mothers noted. There is recognition of four women in the Matthew 1 genealogy. What makes this even stranger that these aren’t patriarchs, but least impressive names to be includes in the Messiah’s genealogy. Three of the four women were from pagan enemy nations; three of their stories involved shady sexual behavior. The author wanted to accomplish more than just name-dropping on Jesus’ behalf. These four women were important keys to the story of the Savior. In the case of Tamar, God can use any person or situation to accomplish his will. Tamar was an unlikely choice because she was a Canaanite, and she tricked her father-in-law Judah into carrying out his neglected duty to provide a kinsman-redeemer for her. She was twice a widow and cast aside by Judah. Tamar was determined to preserve the family line from which Judah’s father Jacob prophesied the future king and Messiah would come (Genesis 49:10). In spite old Tamar’s unsavory background she is placed in Jesus’ genealogy is one of redemption. God used Tamar to accomplish his far-reaching will and bring Judah, a ruthless, proud man to repentance and humility. In the case of Rahab and Ruth, God blesses anyone who seeks Him. God chooses outsiders to do great things. Rahab, a Canaanite, was a prostitute in Jericho. She was the courageous lady who saved Israel by protecting their spies at her own risk all because she heard of the God of Israel. Rahab’s part in Jesus’ genealogy tells of God’s forgiveness of our past and his love of the whole world. The evidence shows that the Messiah’s human DNA wasn’t 100 percent Jewish. Rahab married Salmon in which her son, Boaz was born. Boaz is the one who married Ruth, a Moabite, giving their great-grandson David more “heathen” blood. It’s not just in a name that the Lord makes clear He looks on the heart, not the outward appearance, just as Samuel told Jesse before anointing his youngest, least important son as Israel’s greatest king (I Samuel 16:7). It was the dark age of Israel’s judges Ruth’s story is told with strong faith and unconditional love contrast sharply with the disappointment and bitterness of Ruth’s Hebrew mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth’s part in the family tree was a woman God used to restore and bless many setting the stage for Jesus who declared outsiders with righteous hearts please God more than insiders passing off religious nationalism as righteousness. Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah, whose murder had been deceitfully planned by King David to cover up his affair with her. The result was that the royal family met with tragedy and violence through David’s sons. Solomon, Bathsheba’s second son and David’s heir, drifted from God into diverse polygamy and idol worship that eventually split the kingdom in two. Jesus’ genealogy reveals redemption and forgiveness and can bring good out of our worst choices. While Matthew notes King Solomon as Jesus’ legal ancestor, Luke 3 cites Nathan, Bathsheba’s younger son, as his blood ancestor. Nathan was probably named after David’s trusted counselor, the prophet who’d confronted the king about his affair. Even though Bathsheba’s first son with David died, God blessed her with more sons, one whom became a close relation to the long-awaited Messiah. Through the Matthew and Luke genealogies, God’s Spirit was quietly bringing to light His work of redemption over thousands of years in the end revealing His splendid face to us.
