What Does Jesus Mean to You? Who is he?

Key Scriptures: Hebrews 1:1-14, Matthew 16:13-23.

I.              Introduction

Do you really know who the real Jesus is? Many people have sought the true Jesus not as a moral, humble teacher who did miracles, but why he came to Earth to die on a cross, rose again on the third day, and then ascended into Heaven. In the first chapter of Colossians in the 15th and 16th verse says regarding Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for by Him were all things created, that are in Heaven, and that are in Earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers. Jesus is many things to many people and in this Bible lesson we will study some of these.

II.           Exposition

While Jesus and His disciples came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, they stopped along the road to rest and He asked of His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Then Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ the Son of the Living God.”

In his remarkable work Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis made a statement about Jesus that is without equal in all English writing: “ I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

There is no other person in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible that has fulfilled so many of the prophecies as Jesus has. On one single day, while on the cross Christ fulfilled over 30 of these prophecies. This is evident that Jesus is the Messiah that the scriptures foretold his life, death, and resurrection.

III.         Summary

The Old Testament prophecy revealed that Jesus Christ is the promised Savior (Messiah) and the New Testament is the fulfillment of the prophecy that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

IV.          Meditation

Dear Father God, Remind us that your son Jesus Christ is the first most important thing in our lives. And we all realize that He is the Creator of the Universe and the Living Word by which we have eternal life. There is no other name that we are saved.
