| Trained in Rhodesia at 26 EFTS and on Harvards at 22 SFTS and left the country on 31 July 1942 with the rank of Sergeant |
| posted to the United Kingdom where he joined 16 Sqn RAF. The squadron was part of 34 Wing in the Tactical Air Force, |
| formed for service over and in Europe for the invasion. While waiting for that event to take place, Scotty and other pilots |
| were given the task of flying Spitfire Mk IX and XIX on photographic reconnaissance over Europe from Northolt. He was |
| injured in an aircraft accident in 1942, but returned to duty after a period of hospitalization. After the invasion 16 Sqn RAF |
| operated from France, Belgium, Holland and Germany where at the end of hostilities Scotty became attached to the Army of |
| Occupation. He had been commisioned on 29 June 1943 and elected to remain in the RAAF and was granted a Short Service |
| Commission after having been posted home in 1946. As a member of the post war Air Force, he went to Iwakuni, Japan with |
| 77 Sqn, flying Mustangs with the British Combined Occupation Force. He was posted back to Australia in 1946 but returned in |
| March 1951 to fly Mustangs and Meteors with 77 Sqn in the Korean War. He returned to Australia again in July 1952 but was |
| posted to Changi Malaya soon afterwards to sevre with 36 Sqn dropping supplies to troops engaged in the "Emergancy" |
| there. He returned to Australia in time for discharge on the 29 June 1953. |
