Take part in the planning of these or other events
A peace actions planning meeting was held at the PeaceNook, October 8. There were over two dozen of us in attendance and we've come up with some plans that we're feeling quite positive about. While not all peace groups in the area were represented, we did have folks present from PW, SPA, FOR, the Greens, the Catholic Diocese Office of Social Concerns, Newman Center Social Concerns, the Missouri Farmers Union, as well as some unaffiliated folks. We welcome the endorsement and participation in these actions by as many groups as possible, as well as attendance by reps of other groups at our next meeting 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22.
Future Events:
We spent some time brainstorming options for action. Following this there was discussion that led to the following events being planned:
We will have a letter writing campaign that includes both letters to the editor, and letters to congressional representatives. Mark will compile a list of talking points with input from Barbara, Kim and Tamela to send out via email, and for a letter writing session scheduled to follow Larry Brown’s presentation.
We will begin a Weekly Rush Hour demonstration at the intersection of Broadway and Providence beginning 10/17 from 4-6 and occurring every Wednesday afternoon indefinitely.
A heightened presence in the high schools is planned to counter the heightened military recruitment presence. Currently Mark represents Peaceworks at Rockbridge the 2nd Thursday of every month and at Hickman the 3rd Thursday of every month. Each organization is allowed to be present one day a month, and perhaps FOR, SPA, Vets for Peace and other peace groups could begin a monthly presence to present an alternative to the military to high school students.
Elaine will be the point person for a new street theatre group. She has the names of several interested performers. If you would like more information or would like to participate please contact Elaine at
erhartley@socket.netClass and work walkouts were suggested, and are an option for sometime in the future when there is a larger base of peace activists.
A demonstration is planned for Whiteman Air Force Base on 11/11 which is both the 2nd month anniversary of the WTC / Pentagon attacks and Veteran’s Day. There is some hope that we can get participation from both the Mid-Missouri area including Jefferson City and Columbia and the Kansas City Area as well. There will be a meeting to plan the event in greater detail on Thursday 10/11 at 6pm in the Peace Nook Lounge. Join us if you can.
Next Meeting
:We will all meet again to discuss how things are moving forward on Monday 10/22 at 5:30 in the Peace Nook Lounge. Hope to see you there.
