There are several ways to get involved

If Governor Holden fails to intervene, we ask all conscientious citizens to join us for part or all of a three-day fast from Sunday morning, March 4 through all of Tuesday, March 6, initiated by the University Amnesty International group. So far, AI organizers have reached half of their goal of getting commitments from more than 100 people to fast. If you are willing to join the fast for compassion, contact Allison Payne via 256-1929 or e-mail at akp67f@mizzou.edu.

On that Tuesday, keep aware as you go about the University campus. The AI group is coordinating a “die-in” of sorts. People will be lying outdoors about the campus with shrouds over their faces. Support people will walk among the “dead,” passing out literature drawing attention to various inequities and immoralities of the death penalty. Again call Allison to help out and/or for more details.

There will be Presence of Conscience in the Capitol office of Gov. Bob Holden begining at Noon, Tuesday, March 6 and throughout the afternoon as people's schedules allow. Gov. Holden's spokespeople have reported that the executive will not be making up his mind about intervening in Antonio Richardson's execution until a few hours before the scheduled 12:01 killing. Let's help steer him onto the moral path of action.

We have committments for folks from 12:00- 1:30 and from 3:00- 4:00 (the University AI crew). Many of the folks will be among those on the three-day fast. All individuals are of course welcome. Car-pools will be leaving Brady Commons at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30. Come join if you can and if possible help fill in the 1:30-3:00 void. Call Jeff (573-449-4585) or Allison (573-256-1929) for details.

Please also join us in protest vigils, on Tuesday the 6th from 5:00-6:00p.m. in front of the Boone County Courthouse and before the Governor’s Mansion from 11:00 p.m. until midnight. Car-pooling from Columbia is available at 10:00 p.m. at the courthouse.

Richardson’s case also reminds us why it’s essential that Missouri lawmakers pass HB 265 and SB 192, which would prohibit death-sentencing mentally-retarded individuals and pass and SB 55, which would impose a two-year moratorium on executions while an appointed commission studies how the death penalty is imposed in Missouri. Contact your legislators in the House and SenateSenate today.
If you are not sure who your legislators are they have a web page to help you. For more information you can call Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty at 573-449-4585.
