Council of Light or C.O.L. is a dark society, in which you accept a dark mark on your soul in exchange for certain powers. If you use up all your spirit, you die a spirit death, decompose instantly and use up two deeds. You always have to leave at least one spirit remaining. You can get a cleric to cast W.O.L. at you, but usually it's just a question of waiting a bit for more spirit points. Dark elves have the worst spirit recovery, halflings and dwarves the best.

Also, if anyone outside of C.O.L. sees you 'drained' or using more than half of your spirit, the Poohbah takes away your powers for up to 30 minutes. It helps to find a room by yourself and then hide in case someone else comes in. If you train enough in hiding, you can hide anywhere. In order to resign, you must declare to Poohbah "I resign from the society!" but I believe you must do so before making master.

2. Symbol of whisper - No cost, communicate with fellow C.O.L.
3. Sign of warding - 1 mana, +5 to DS.
4. Sign of striking - 1 mana, +5 to AS.
5. Sign of clotting - 1 mana, stops bleeding for a short time.
6. Sign of thought - 1 mana, works like Amunet.
7. Sign of defending - 2 mana, +10 to DS.
8. Sign of smiting - 2 mana, +10 to AS.
9. Sign of staunching - 1 spirit, Stops bleeding longer than clotting.
10. Sign of deflection - 3 spirit, deflects lightning, shock and fire bolt.
11. Sign of hypnosis - 1 spirit, like spell of calming.
12. Sign of swords - 1 spirit, +20 to AS.
13. Sign of shields - 1 spirit, +20 to DS.
14. Sign of dissipation - 1 spirit, helps deflect magic.
15. Sign of healing - 2 spirit, restores full hit points.
16. Sign of madness - 3 spirit, +50 to AS, -defense.
17. Sign of possession - 4 spirit, like hypnosis but lasts longer.
18. Sign of wracking - 5 spirit, replenishes all mana.
19. Sign of darkness - 6 spirit, transports to C.O.L. bathhouse.
