Types of Ships.
Schooner: Originally, a small, sharp-built vessel, with two topsails on one or both masts and was called a topsail schooner.
About 1840, longer vesels with three masts, fore-and-aft rigged, came into use, and since that time vesels
with four masts and even with six masts, so rigged, are built. The first schooner ever constructed is said to have
been built in Gloucester, Massachusetts, about the year 1713, by a Captain Andrew Robinson, and to have
received its name from the following trivial circumstance: When the vessel went off the stocks into the water,
a bystander cried out,O, how she scoons!" Robinson replied, A scooner let her be;"
and, from that time, vessels thus masted and rigged have gone by this name.
Sloop: A vessel having one mast and fore-and-aft rig, consisting of a boom-and-gaff mainsail, jibs, staysail, and gaff topsail.
The typical sloop has a fixed bowsprit, topmast, and standing rigging, while those of a cutter are capable of being readily shifted.
The sloop usually carries a centerboard, and depends for stability upon breadth of beam rather than depth of keel.
Bark: A small vessel with one mast and a fore and aft rig. The mainsail is attached to a gaff at the head and a boom at the foot and
above it a gaff topsail can be set. Before the mast are one or more jibs.
Ship: large craft in which persons and goods can be conveyed on water.
A larger vessel usually thought of as being used for ocean travel. A vessel able to carry
a "boat" on board.
SteamShip(SS): A watercraft propelled by a STEAM ENGINE or a steam TURBINE.
A number of experimental steam-powered vessels were built in the late 18th cent., and in 1807
Robert FULTON's Clermon made the 150-mi (240-km) trip from New York City to Albany in 32 hr.
Barque: A vessel with three or more masts with square sails on the fore mast and fore and aft sails on the after
mast. Generally in the range of 250 - 700 ton capacity.
Brig: 1. A two masted vessel square rigged on both masts.Generally in the 150 - 200 ton range. 2. A sailing
vessel's jail.
HMS: A prefix used before a vessel's name to denote that it is owned by the crown, or in His/Her Majesty's
Service.
RMS: A prefix used for Royal Merchant Ships.
GALLIOTT: Served largely for transporting merchandise along the coast. They had fore-and-aft sails and the broad hull
very typical of freighters, providing ample hold space and ease of navigation.
