A "hofje" is roughly translated into English as almshouse. This is not entirely correct, however. A hofje consists of several blocks of small houses around an inner garden, entered through a gate house. Often, these hofjes are very charming. The Wildemanshof in Alkmaar is one of the most beautiful hofjes in the Netherlands.
