Source: "Singapore became
a self-governing state on 3 June 1959, although still a part of the
British Empire. Independence originally came by default due to the delay
in the creation of the Federation of Malaysia, which was scheduled to
come into existence at 00.00 hrs. on 31 August 1963, and Singapore was
due to be transferred from British to Malaysian sovereignty at that
moment. As the formation of Malaysia was postponed until 00.00 hrs.
on 16 September 1963, Singapore became independent at 00.00 hrs. and
enjoyed sixteen days as an independent state ...
"Considerable
confusion surrounds the timing of Singapore's secession from Malaysia
on 9 August 1965 [...] Western
reports that the independence of Singapore took place at 00.01 hrs.
were inaccurate, as there was no legal or public transfer of power
at this time. There may have been a de facto transfer of a sort as the
secession agreement instructed all Malaysian officials in Singapore
to transfer their allegiance to the Singapore government as from 9 August,
suggesting de facto independence from 00.00 hrs. [...]
"The Singapore
National Library confirmed that Lee Kwan Yew proclaimed Singapore independence
on the steps of City Hall at 10.00 am. Clearly 10.00 a.m. saw a de facto
proclamation of independence ... The Prime Minister ... opened parliamentary
proceedings in Kualur Lumpur at about 10.00 a.m., and ... they were
concluded between 4.00 p.m. and 4.30 p.m., most likely between 4.15
and 4.20 p.m. 'Simultaneously with the passing of the Bill by both
Houses of Parliament, Singapore became independent.'" Campion,
"Book of World Horoscopes," pp. 332-333.
Commentary: Least-aspected
or Primary
Transcendental Mercury and Secondary
Transcendental, Saturn, both combine here to portray the contractual
or bureaucratically 'arranged' freedom which Singapore was to enjoy
for sixteen days, an independence "by default due to the delay
[Secondary Saturn] in the creation of the Federation of Malaysia,"
as noted by Nicholas Campion, above. (Two years later, in the charts
for full independence, Mercury would again appear as the
least-aspected or Primary Transcendental Planet.)
The appearance of Saturn here, during these first moments of independence,
is indicative of the potential for governmental stability and institutional
soundness so required by nation states. In subsequent years, however,
Singapore would take these Saturnine values of order, control, and discipline
and apply them in excessive degrees. As we shall see in the horoscopes
which follow, Saturn's position would change into that of a most-aspected
planet (MAP), indicative of excess, abuse, and the hubristic application
of the planetary energies in question.
