When you try to start Dial-Up Networking,
you receive the following error message:
Error 630: The computer is not receiving a response
from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in,
and if necessary, turn the modem off,
and then turn it back on.
This error message can occur if the modem
is using a newly detected serial port installed by Windows 98 hardware
detection. If this is the case, change the properties of
the Dial-Up Networking connection to use the new modem settings.
Programs run at StartUp from the StartUp
folder can also cause this error message.
To temporarily disable programs in the StartUp
folder, follow these steps:
1.
Click Start > Run and in the Open:
box, type msconfig, then press OK
2.
In Msconfig click the Startup tab.
For programs that may control your modem, click the program's check
box to clear it. If you are not sure whether or not a specific program
should be disabled, click to clear all of the check boxes except
for the following check boxes:
o ScanRegistry
o TaskMonitor
o SystemTray
o LoadPowerProfile
(is loaded twice normally)
631 The port was disconnected by the user 631
632 The structure size is incorrect
633 The port is already in use or is not configured for Remote
Access dialout
Error 633
When you try to start Dial-Up Networking,
you receive the following error message:
Error 633: The modem is not installed
or configured for Dial-Up Networking.
To check your modem configuration, double click the Modems
icon in Control Panel.
This error message can occur if the Telephon.ini
file is missing or damaged. To resolve this issue, please see the

WARNING: If you have modified the original
configuration files for the Remote Access service in any way, you
should back up the files before proceeding. For example, if you
modified the Modem.inf file to add information for an unsupported
modem, or if you modified the Switch.inf file to create a script
to connect to your Internet service provider (ISP), make sure to
back up these files.
To resolve this issue, replace the damaged files by removing and
reinstalling the Remote Access service.

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate
method below:
Windows NT versions 3.1, 3.5, and 3.51
- Double-click
the Control Panel icon in the Main group, and then double-click
the Network icon.
- Under
Installed Network Software, click Remote Access Service, click
Configure, and then click Configure again.
- Under
Port Usage, click either Dial Out Only or Dial Out And Receive
Calls.
- Click
OK, click Continue, click OK, and then click Restart Now to restart
your computer when you are prompted.
Windows NT version 4.0
- Click
Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click
Network, and then click the Services tab.
- Click
Remote Access Service, and then click Properties.
- Click
Configure, and then click either Dial Out Only or Dial Out And
Receive Calls.
- Click
OK, Click Continue, click Close, and then click Yes to restart
your computer when you are prompted.
