CW3 Michael L. Gruber was born on Monday, May 14, 1956, in Norfolk, Nebraska. He passed away on Saturday, March 20, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a veteran of both the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. During the Gulf War, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
He was a former member of Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 29 Field Artillery, Baumholder, Germany
from 1988 to 1991. During his assignment, he was the Battalion Maintenance Technician, and deployed with the battalion, participating in Operations Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. His technical expertise maintained the battalion's equipment in high combat readiness throughout the Gulf War Theater of Operations.
After the unit redeployed to Baumholder in May of 1991, he was then reassigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, with the 1st Special Forces Group. Upon his promotion to CW3, he was reassigned to I Corps, and the 20th Material Management Center.
He retired from Active Duty in 1995, relocating to Las Vegas. There, he was employed as a civilian maintenance instructor for the 99th Transportation Squadron, located at Nellis Air Force Base.
He and his family became very close to those in the squadron, even in the final weeks of his life. He was buried with full Military Honors, as one of their own, in the Southern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. He was surrounded by uniforms, and none were strangers to him.
Mike is survived by his wife Pam, and two son's, Christopher and Steven, of Las Vegas, Nevada.
