The Powerful Owl

The Powerful Owl

Well ok here I am, Australia's largest and most enigmatic and unpredictable owl. I have also been referred to as the Eagle owl.

The upper parts of my body vary from grey-brown to dark brown and sometimes appear bluish in dull light. My forehead is creamy white and my neck and head are spotted creamy white. My tail is brown with about six creamy white bars. My face is brown with bright yellow eyes and a powerful bluish brown beak. My belly is a off white and my legs are feathered and I have huge yellow feet with brown talons. The male, of our species and that'a me speaking now is considerably larger than the female which is most unusual in the owl family. But as I pointed out before we are the largest of all the owls usually measuring about 25 inches in length and I can weigh up to almost 4 pounds. When I take flight my wing span can reach as much as 53 inches. Is that something or what?

As far as my appetite is concerned I prefer possums, rabbits, Cockatoos, magpies, and ravens. I don't usually eat my prey until the nite time when I can relax and enjoy it.

I would prefer that my female tell you guys about our breeding habits but since she's not around I guess it's up to me. We are a very punctual breeders, my female even laying her eggs on almost the exact date each year. Our nest is nearly always in a trunk or broken top of a big Eucalypt tree as high as 147 ft. She usually lays about 2 eggs in 4 day intervals. It takes about 38 days to hatch and then our young usually stay with their mother for a few months. I prefer to stay away after they're born and just supply the food which their mother comes and gets from me. Don't get me wrong though I will protect my young if I sense any kind of danger so just keep that in mind. We like to live in wet and hilly forests but can survive in smaller drier forests as long as there is enough food for us out there. We mostly hang out in the south-eastern part of Australia by the coast. Well time to go and be enigmatic, whatever that means.
