The viewers speak: ABC wins the week

NEW YORK (AP) -- Anybody want a recount?

Helped by ``Who Wants to be a Millionaire,'' ``The Practice and Monday Night Football, ABC carried the week of Nov. 6 through 12 in prime-time ratings, Nielsen Media Research reported Tuesday.

Overall in prime time, ABC was first with an average of 14.1 million viewers followed by NBC's 13.6 million viewers (both networks scored a 9.3 household rating and 15 share).

NBC's ``ER'' was the top-ranked show of the week, with that network's ``Friends,'' ``Law & Order,'' ``The West Wing'' and ``Will & Grace'' also cracking the top 10.

CBS averaged 11.8 million viewers for an 8.3 household rating and 13 share, followed by Fox with 9.4 million viewers (5.9 rating, 9 share). The WB logged 4.8 million viewers (3.1, 5), UPN had 4.5 million viewers (2.9, 4), and Pax TV had 1.36 million viewers (1.0, 2).

Among new fall series, NBC's sitcom ``Cursed'' did best, landing in a tie for 17th place. In 22nd place was CBS's crime drama ``CSI,'' a surprise hit in its Friday night berth. And that network's cop show ``The District'' continued to do well on Saturday night, tying for 40th place.

In the evening news race, NBC's ``Nightly News'' won with 12.5 million viewers (9.1 household rating, 17 share). ABC's ``World News Tonight'' was second with 11.1 million viewers (8.2 rating, 15 share), while ``The CBS Evening News'' (7.6 rating, 14 share) had 10.2 million viewers. (Measurements for Tuesday's special early-evening election coverage distort these numbers slightly, but not the network rankings.)

Prime-time ratings compiled by Nielsen Media Research for November 6-12. Top 20 listings include the week's ranking, with rating for the week and season-to-date rankings in parentheses.

An ``X'' in parentheses denotes a one-time-only presentation. The rating is the percentage of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. Each ratings point represents 1,008,000 households.
