About KPIX

KPIX is the first television station in Northern California, signing on the airwaves on 24 December 1948.  On 18 April 1949, it became an affiliate of the newly formed CBS Television Network, of which it is still an affiliate today.  KPIX can claim several firsts, including the first noon newscast and the first program in the U.S. to introduce the magazine format to television, "Evening Magazine."  KPIX even helped its first competitor, KGO, to get on the air in 1949 as well, and informed viewers on how to best receive the new station. Today, KPIX is the home to the Bay Area's only newscast at 4:30pm and the only hour-long newscast at 5:00pm.  It currently finishes in near to last place in the ratings books, finishing just ahead of KNTV in the 11pm news race, or in third place.
