Following the use of this tutorial, you should be able to:

1. Describe appropriate clinical situations in which the use of parenteral and enteral nutrition would be indicated.

2. Recognize the possible adverse effects of parenteral and enteral nutrition.

3. Calculate fluid, calorie, and protein requirements when given pertinent information about a patient.

4. Recognize appropriate doses of electrolytes, vitamins, and trace minerals for patients receiving parenteral nutrition.

5. Describe how to administer a TPN and what parameters should be monitored in these patients.

6. Write an order for parenteral or enteral nutrition when given a patient case.
