18th April 2000 Tan Sri Ismail Khan passed away. |
SEREMBAN, Tues. - The country's first Malay judge Tan Sri Ismail Khan bin Ibrahim Khan, 94, who was also Dewan Negara president between 1981 to 1986, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Seremban Hospital, at 2.45am today. He was buried at the old Kota Road mosque in Taiping, where several of the family members were laid to rest. Having excelled in his studies at King Edward VII School and St George's Institution in Taiping, he went to Singapore with the intention of doing medicine but opted out and headed for University College, London where he studied law. He was called to the English Bar by the Middle Temple in 1928 and was the first Malay law graduate and the second Malay to become a barrister. In 1958, Ismail Khan was appointed a judge. He showed his magnanimity when he turned down an offer to be made the country's first Malayan Chief Justice. He was the first Malaysian to succeed the British as Chief Justice of Borneo in 1968, when he took over from Tan Sri P.E.H. Pike, until his retirement in 1973. In January 1981, the late Tun Hussein Onn pulled him out of retirement and appointed him president of the Upper House of Senate, a post he held until 1986. |
