What is Air Pollution?
Air pollution is created by many different sources. Factories, power plants, smelters, dry cleaners, degreasing operations, cars, buses, trucks, trains, windblown dust and volcanic eruptions all contribute to air pollution.
Air quality can be affected in many ways by the pollution emitted from these sources. The EPA has identified these six substances as principal pollutants: Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Lead, Ozone (or smog), Particulate Matter and Sulphur Dioxide. If the level of these pollutants is higher than what is acceptable by the EPA, it is called a nonattainment area. The EPA and national, state and local organizations (Palm Beach County Health Dept.), closely monitor for pollutants and attainment areas.
In Palm Beach County, we are mainly concerned with Ozone and Particulate Matter.
