Dear Friend,

It's been months since I last heard from you? I begin to worry that something has befallen you or that you no longer wish to hear from me. If it's the latter, all you need say is the word and I shall write no more. I'm sorry if I've disturbed you with my tales, but I had to speak to someone about all I've seen. You are the only one I trust well enough to share them.

My latest subject has captivated me. My grandfather and her father knew one another. Isn't that marvelous? I never thought to meet someone I could substantiate from my own family history and memory. It's exciting and wonderful, but it makes everything I've written so far frighteningly real now. I had doubts that I was merely dreaming til now.

(Introduction) Her name is Puabi. I leave out her surname simply because she no longer uses it. I honor her in discarding it's label this way. She is of Turkish and Spanish descent I believe. If I remember my grandfather correctly her parents had a home in Madrid for a while when their children were small before the travel and excavations began. Selena and Manuel ( her parents ) were both avid historians of ancient cultures as well as moderately well known archaeologists. They were among the first wave of Europeans to begin excavation in Egypt during the 1800s. And they weren't the type to leave their family behind, so when they went exploring, they took Puabi and her two younger brothers with them to search for buried artifacts and long lost treasure.

(Egypt) The young Puabi thrived in Egypt. Her parents indulgently left her to her own amusements much of the time, and she took full advantage of the freedoms she was given. She learned the native languages quickly, and therefore was welcomed into the fold of the local people much more readily than most at the time. The mysticism and religions of the country had fascinated her before leaving Spain, but once immersed in Egyptian culture, they fascinated her even more.

Those interests led her into the arms a young man named Gaynor. She met him in the streets of Cairo she told me. He had been following her for many days although she was completely unaware of it at the time. When she finally discovered her shadow, Gaynor professed that he had heard of her interests in the ancient rites and occult through a mutual friend ( One whose name he cleverly never revealed ) and quickly won her over. He dangled the one gilded apple before she couldn't refuse: knowledge. He seemed to know all the secrets that lay just beneath the surface of history, just out of her reach, and Gaynor promised to share those secrets with her.

(The Embrace) In his own way, he followed through with his promise too. Gaynor embraced her, welcoming Puabi into world of the Followers of the Set, the Setites as they've become known as. She welcomed it with open arms from the very first. This new life gave her freedom, religion, and more knowledge than she could have amassed in a hundred lifetimes. She gloried, and glories still, in the dark knowledge, blood, and immortality that he gave her.

(Eternal Quest) Don't be fooled by her scholarship however. She is not all books and study. Puabi has a bloodlust that shocks me still even to hear about it. From the first night she showed no remorse or mercy. She killed for the pleasure of it, the power of death brought her closer to achieving. She experimented with death, made the living population she was once part of her morbid plaything. The viscousness and needless cruelty of her actions, it was the one thing Gaynor disapproved of. But that didn't stop Puabi. It didn't even make her pause. If anything, it has increased her drive to reach whatever conclusion she's looking for through immortality. She's been walking the earth for over a hundred and fifty years.

She's made a few friends in that time, but most of all made many enemies. Stay away from her little dove. Stay away. She has a grudge against me for some slight she perceives my grandfather made toward her father, and I fear she would hurt you just to spite me. Be careful and ever watchful. I could not bear to lose you ...

Sincerely,
Collin Deloney
