The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) headed by Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, and the min component of Malaysia's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition government, is bent towards playing up on racial issues in the run-up to the general elections expected in the next three months.
The private television station, TV3, owned by companies linked to UMNO, was at its best again in concocting racial issues. Recently TV3's premier 8.00 pm news bulletin carried a scene of some characters purportedly to be members of the Islamic opposition party, PAS burying PAS flag in a Chinese cemetry.
The questions which most people asked were, since PAS is doing its best to allay non-Muslim, especially Chinese fears of the party and is trying hard to win them over, why then should PAS go and desecrate a Chinese cemetry?
How come TV3 crew was on the spot to video-taped the event. Surely PAS would not have called TV3 to be at the scene if PAS had wanted to desecrate the cemetry.
It was obvious that UMNO workers were responsible for burying the PAS flag in the Chinese cemetry. UMNO is doing its best to make the Chinese become fearful and hateful of PAS. UMNO is desperate that it now stoops down so very low.
UMNO must stop this dirty tactic of trying to instigate racial conflict between the Chinese and Malays. It took yeras after the May 13, 1969 race riots thirty years ago to restore confidence between the Malays and Chinese. There were I recalled many "durian parties".
The outbreak of racial violence this time around which UMNO is instigating and hoping to happen could reach such proportions that it goes beyond our ability to mend race relations in the country.
