Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter by ‘Anak Susulat’, Tenom, which touched on Dr. Wan Azizah and political parties affiliated to Barisan Alternatif (DE 2.8.1999).

Anak Susulat appeared to have lost his direction and went far astrayed when he started branding those out to exercise their constitutional rights to wrest power through electoral system as agents of foreign powers. What an absurd and parochial mind trying to cause unnecessary fear among those eager to use their voting rights for a change  of leadership in the government. Come on, we are living in an era where people can no longer be fooled around simply by threatening them of new colonialism. Who wants to colonise Malaysia? Are  those in power now really serious in giving freedom to the people to speak up their minds without fear of being dump in the ISA cage? Has not ISA been abused from its basic founding to crush communist insurgency to defending the action of the present leaders? What colonialism? Anak Susulat clearly missed the fact that the United Nations has declared that any nations that are still colonised should be allowed freedom if they choose to.

Anak Susulat failed to make proper research when he stated that independence was achieved through bloodshed and that Malaysia’s very own people are a threat to independence. There were actually not a drop of blood shed as independence was merely handed over ‘on a golden plate’ with string attached by the British to their UMNO servant leaders that UMNO must accept the policy of ‘jus soli’ which UMNO did not object! Was there really any struggle to gain independence that cost the lives of UMNO leaders? Is it fair to call Malaysians that are qualified to run for election and to have the ambition to be Prime Minister or First Lady as a threat to their own country? I wonder where in this world did you learn this sort of nonsense? If you think you share the same idea as the present Prime Minister that nobody should dream of becoming Prime Minister and that Mahathir alone is qualified to hold the office till death, then it should be institutionalised by Act of Parliament.

I think I can agree with Anak Susulat that it was not an easy task for Dr. Mahathir to sack Anwar from the post of DPM and expelled him from UMNO. It was indeed a very difficult one because Anwar chose the second ultimatum instead of the first one. ‘you resign or face prosecution’! Now, with the ongoing court hearings because Anwar chose not to bow down to Dr. Mahathir’s demand to resign, a  lot of new stories unfolded which only exposed the true colours of those who conspired to finish Anwar’s career and struggle. Prosecute, but do not beat, do not punch,do not nake people, do not shave people’s hair.  Aren’t we civilised society?  Don’t we have rules of law? Have we lost our sane and now become insane?

Well, PAS and DAP could have different ideologies which is to the knowledge of  every  Malaysian. But talking about denying victory to the corrupt, unjust and nepotistic leaders of the present government, is it impossible for PAS and DAP to come to the negotiating table? Why is Anak Susulat so jealous to see leaders from PAS and DAP holding joint ceramahs and other forms of facts-dissemination which drew large turnouts that even outwit reception given to Dr. Mahathir? Nobody paid for the people to come to listen to talks held by PAS, DAP or KeADILan leaders. Even buses were not despatched to collect listeners, unlike UMNO. But yet people came. They wanted to hear the credible news and stories that are not distorted and twisted. They con only get these news from the opposition.
