Latest Indonesian election vote count

JAKARTA, June 9 (AFP) - The countrywide vote count in Indonesia's general elections, giving the positions of the leading parties among the 48 contestants, according to the latest Election Commission figures:

This tally was released by the commission at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday (1605 GMT) with 6,110,493 votes, around five percent, counted out of the expected 112 million votes cast.


Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) 2,378,613 (38.9 percent)

   National Awakening Party (PKB)             1,281,160 (20.9 percent)
   Golkar Party                                 971,441 (15.8 percent)
   United Development Party (PPP)               542,032 ( 8.9 percent)
   National Mandate Party (PAN)                 365,883 ( 6.0 percent)

The remaining votes were shared by a host of smaller parties.

Indonesia has adopted a system of proportional representation which allows parties to share their votes and could play an important role in the final allocation of the 462 parliamentary seats up for grabs.
