Winter Fun Hat

I designed this hat a couple of winters ago. You can't see them in this photo but there are springs on top. They make this hat fun to wear and fun to make. I hope you enjoy this pattern and please let me know if and when you make it. I'd love to see a photo of yours.

As always, if you use my pattern, please give me credit for the pattern. You may make as many as you want and you can sell them or give them away, as you choose.

Winter Fun Hat

Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn:
Color A - Main Color
Color B
F Hook - note if you crochet tight use a G Hook

Measure child's head. With Color A make a chain to the length of the measurement being careful not to stretch the chain. Also ch needs to be an odd number for the pattern. Join the chain with a sl st making sure not to twist ch.

Row 1: sc in each ch around, join with sl st
Row 2: ch 3 The ch 3 will look like a BP dc. (FP dc in next sc, BP dc in next sc) around to last sc. FP dc in last st.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2 making sure you are doing a FP dc above the previous row's FP dc. Join with sl st dropping Color A(to wrong side of work) and attaching Color B. ch 3
Row 4: Repeat Row 2
Row 5: Repeat Row 2, drop Color B and pick up Color A
Row 6: Repeat Row 2
Row 7: Repeat Row 2
Row 8: ch 1 loosely, hdc in same st and in every st around, drop Color A and pick up Color B
Row 9: ch 1 loosely, hdc in same st and in next 8 hdc, (hdc in next 9 hdc, dec hdc in next two hdc) repeat around. Please note that you may not end up with the exact pattern at the end due to the child's head size and beginning ch. Join with sl st, drop Color B and pick up Color A
Row 10: ch 1 loosely, hdc in same st and in next 3 hdc, dec hdc in next two hdc, (hdc in next 9 hdc, dec hdc in next two hdc) repeat around. Join with sl st, drop Color A and pick up Color B
Rows 11- 24: Repeat Rows 9 and 10 alternating
Row 25: With Color A ch 1 sc in same st (ch 19, 2 sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch, sc in same hdc as starting sc, sc in next 2 hdc) repeat around. Please note that there is a good chance that you'll have extra stitches left over. If there are less than 3, sc in each, then sl st in 1st hdc. Drop Color A, pick up Color B.
Row 26: ch 1, sk 1st spring made and sc in free or "middle" sc, (ch 19, 2 sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch, sc in same hdc as starting sc, sc in next 2 hdc) repeat around. Join with sl st. Fasten off leaving long length for sewing.

Sewing Top: Using needle go in at base and back up through. (Sk next 3 springs and go in at base and back up through.) Repeat around pulling tightly and closing any holes left open. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Note to Lefties: In the beginging change FP dc to BP dc, etc. this will hide the ch 3.
