Route
66 was christened in 1926. (This is one of those times that I can
comfortably say, "I wasn't even born!") It was the first highway
to link Chicago with Los Angeles... 2,448 miles. By the mid 1930's the
highway began to create it's own myth; it grew larger than life. It became
the way west. After World War II, Bobby Troup penned his familiar
tune, Route 66. The most popular version was done by Nat King Cole.
During the 1960's (I was alive by then!), the road became even more famous with
the TV series Route 66.
In 1984, state transportation officials ordered the removal of the remaining
Route 66 road signs. They may have taken her numbers and destination away
but Route 66 was not dead.
