  • March 22, 2002 - From belle - Background Extra for CMIYC

Well, today was my first day on the set and I spent the entire day with Leo and Steven. It was a lot of fun. We were shooting a scene in which Leo's character is addressing a group of students at the Univeristy of Miami, recruiting for Flight Attendants. We were shooting at a small theatre off of Wilshire, where I saw Matchbox 20 play before they were huge! We had to clap and cheer Leo on, because we were supposed to be in "awe" of the pilot that was going to pick 8 of us for a trip to Europe. There was about 150 of us girls, all dressed up. The 1st AD kept telling us, "Ladies just remember, it's not Leo it's Captain Conner, Leo is very immersed in the role". We had a blast. Leo joked with us, he was smiling the whole time and at the time we wrapped he said, "Ladies, I had a real good time today."

Steven Spielberg was amazing. It was fabulous to watch the two of them interacting together, and Spielberg and most of the crew were wearing "ET" hats because of the re-release of the movie this weekend.

Leo was dressed in a Pilot's uniform and had a little electric fan in his hand that he would use to cool himself off in between shots. He looks so young again. He is a far cry from the character he portrays in Gangs of New York.

Also, Tobey Maguire was there observing for a while. The two of them kept looking out at all of us girls sitting there, looking at them. It was quite humorous. Leo is obviously having a good time, I saw that he joked with all of the crew and would put his arm around his makeup lady. I enjoyed my day and am off tomorrow to Ontario airport where we are shooting again, and then again on Monday.

I just wanted to let you guys know what a great movie this is going to be, and how well production seems to be going. Spielberg told us, "this was one of the funnest days we've had filming so far!". I will give more details about the airport scenes later.

  • March 20, 2002 - Spielberg film will be shot at old terminal - The LA Times reports: Spielberg's latest film, "Catch Me If You Can," will be shot inside and outside the old terminal at ONT starting Friday. Shooting is scheduled to conclude Monday at an airport hangar.

....this is the biggest film to come to the airport, said Sheri Davis, director of the Inland Empire Film Commission.

"Absolutely. This ranks right up there at the top," Davis said of the film. "It is just an amazing combination of Spielberg, Hanks and DiCaprio."

Airport officials won't say whether Hanks or DiCaprio will be in Ontario for the filming this weekend. Davis said she doesn't know who will be here.

  • This is a humorous satire on the woes of an extra more than a true account of the "order of things" but it's worth featuring. Thanks to the wonderful Pax

    3-19-2002 - Lights Out Entertainment
    From Ed Cransten

My call time is moved from 6:30 to 7AM meaning that I could've gotten up at 4:30AM instead of 4AM. The drive to the set is easy enough and I find myself getting breakfast with a burn out looking of a women and another women who is talking to herself. The food is good.

The wardrobe people give us our clothes. We always hear everyone say how the executives at studios are sharks but I'll bet the wardrobe people could give them a run for their money. They are always in bad mood, always rude and furthermore they listen to bad music as they dish out the clothes. There is one in particular that seems to have it in for me... I start talking to people and everyone seems alright. Some have other jobs, some only do background work and others have been doing this stuff for years.

We go to the set and Steven Spielberg is dressed like a skateboarding raver. He won't make eye contact with anyone, is terse and short to everyone but when the FOREIGN PRESS show up the man lights up like the Christmas tree he undoubtedly has in his home every year. Tom Hanks is just like you imagine he would be. He is funny but like all the other stars he doesn't want to be bothered. This point is made clear when the other extra I am working with tries to talk with him. Hanks does a 180 and walks in the other direction.

Leonardo DiCaprio is fine, I guess. He just walks around doing whatever it is that keeps getting him more work. I talk a bit with the girl that plays Tom Hanks secretary and she is really nice. She probably hasn't been told yet that she doesn't have to talk with me. We shoot different shots of the office and we end with me being part of a group of people that hand Leonardo files. A few times in other scenes the extra I am working with tries to direct me by saying "Here is where the camera is gonna be," and whatnot. Then they call lunch... I eat 2 helpings of beef stroganoff and some peach cobbler and I am happy as a clam.

I then proceed to spend the next 6 hours reading my magazines, working on a new script and listening to other extras call their calling services and talk about ordering cable modems and black boxes. We are finally called back to do a scene and by this point I have really bad gas. I try and negotiate my flatulence saved for when Hanks, Leonardo or Spielberg walk by me. I have nothing against these guys at all, I just think that doing this is funny. We shoot a long crane shot scene and then the day is wrapped at 10:15PM That's almost 15 hours at UNION wages, folks.

    3/15/02

My call this day is at 12PM. I get to set early and eat. The crew is supposed to eat first but I eat before them as there aren't many of them around. I start talking to a PA who directed me around the set yesterday. He asks what I am doing on the movie and when I remind him that he was directing me around the set yesterday, he abruptly stops talking with me. We start to get ready for our scenes and the wardrobe people are being their usual 3RD REICH-selfs.

We do our scenes. They are basically as filler, trying to make the FBI office look busy. We go back to the holding area and are then informed that certain extras have been hitting Mr. Hanks and Mr. DiCaprio up for pictures and autographs. In order to stop this, new doors have been built so that they can get on the set that much quicker without having to be around us anymore then is necessary.

We are then told that we're all professionals. These guys are just making $20 million and we're all making $105 for the 8 hour day. You would think for the money they're getting they would "put up" with us lowly background actors just a little more. Now whose not being professional? We go back to the set, do a quick scene and as I walk out, a man in his 60's slides a small camera out of his sleeve and takes a picture of the set. He sees me and knows that I've seen him take this picture. I make eye contact with him very quickly and just say, "Awesome." At this point we are wrapped and it's time to go home. We only work 6 hours on this day...

That's it so far. Stay tuned...

    Leonardo DiCaprio Exclusive

Back in shape and ready for love on set of new film

When Leonardo DiCaprio first catapulted on to our screens there was something that set him apart from his peers, a brooding sexiness and vulnerability which made everybody want a piece of him. To see him larking about on the set of his latest blockbuster movie, Catch Me If You Can, with his co-star Amy Adams, it's clear that he's back on form.

The star of Titanic and the eagerly-awaited new Martin Scorsese film Gangs Of New York drew gasps towards the end of last year when pictures of him looking lank-haired, overweight and bearded appeared in the national press. The photographs prompted hysteria among many of his devout fans, who were eager to see the James Dean-esque heart-throb back on track, gracing magazine covers with his near-perfect boyish good looks once again.

Catch Me If You Can tells the true story of Frank Abagnale - played by Leonardo - a man who lived a life of crime from 1964 to 1966. His skills as a forgerer were compounded by his knack for disguise, and through the course of the film we see him taking on many alter egos, such as a professor, doctor and airline pilot.

The film follows his exciting and dramatic life story from his humble beginnings to his release from prison. But the excitement doesn't stop there. Following his release, Frank decides to go straight but, rather than keep his head down and go about his day-to-day business without attracting the attention of the police, he becomes a consultant for the FBI, the law enforcement agency which tailed him religiously and tried for years to bring him to justice.

Directed by the doyenne of American modern day cinema Steven Spielberg, the film also stars the Oscar-winning Tom Hanks as Joe Shaye, the FBI agent relentlessly tailing Frank. With its stellar cast and crew, and of course the enthralling tale of the youngest man ever to make it on to the FBI's Most Wanted list, Catch Me If You Can looks set to be a possible contender for next year's Academy Awards nominations.

In OK!'s exclusive pictures, some of the first from the multi-million dollar movie set, 27-year-old Leonardo is seen resplendent in '60s-style 'preppie' fashions, embracing his love interest, played by Amy Adams. We also see him suited and booted - and spookily resembling a young Robert De Niro - struggling to carry a box of goodies past a selection of bikini-clad beauties.

Still romantically involved with Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, the pair recently came fifth in a poll of the sexiest couples in Hollywood, and in the fickle world of movies, it's obvious that their relationship has staying power.

But away from his heart-throb image, Leonardo joined a long line of the USA's most credible acting talents when he appeared at a special presentation at a New York acting class given by Marlon Brando. Alongside Nick Nolte and Sean Penn, Leonardo gave a talk to a class of students as Marlon Brando displayed some of his immense talents by acting a scene in a blonde wig and red lipstick!

    THREE LOCATIONS IN MONTREAL

A source at DarkHorizons told them that CHOI 98.1 radio station in Quebec City said that there will be three different locations for 'Catch Me If You Can' filming in May in Montreal and Quebec City

  • FIRST Abagnale pic from the set! Go to CMIYC Galleries! Thanks to Karen for finding it at People.com.

WANTED LEO: A debonair Leonardo DiCaprio shoots a scene from the Steven Spielberg-directed film, Catch Me If You Can, the true story of career con artist Frank Abagnale Jr, on the movie's Hollywood set. DiCaprio will next be seen in Martin Scorsese's long-awaited Gangs of New York.

  • Montreal Gazette - March 3, 2002 (Yikes! Thanks Chris - we'll be there!)

TOP GUN: Montreal film fans will have an almost divine opportunity to be close to the almighty STEVEN SPIELBERG, arguably the most innovative and certainly the most financially successful film director of our time.

Spielberg will spend FIVE DAYS IN MAY around Montreal and Quebec city shooting a movie called CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, which stars LEONARDO DICAPRIO in the true story of Frank Abagnale, a fraud artist who fabricated phony U.S. Government cheques during the 1970's. The star studded cast includes Tom Hanks and Martin Sheen. The culprit (DiCaprio) hides out with family members in France and Spielberg's mandate here is to recreate the French countryside and a typical French farmhouse. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Spielberg created some of Hollywood's and the world's - top grossing films, including JURASSIC PARK, ET, JAWS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, so you gotta figure that he can afford air fare to Europe. But he's reported to want to stay in North America because of security issues after Sept. 11. Still Dreamworks SKG, the movie company Spielberg founded with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, could have its choice of any ersatz "French countryside." Why Quebec??
"We have been trying for a long time to convince L.A. producers that we can do FRANCE here in QUEBEC", a film industry source said, "We have wonderful French architecture...stone houses, everything."

It won't be Spielberg's first vist to our neck of the woods. About 3 years ago, he stopped at Saint-Hubert airport (now a movie studio) and tried to buy it for a location because it was cheaper to buy than rent. But it wasn't for sale and Spielberg jetted back to LA LA LAND after 2 precious hours on our turf.

  • February 28, 2002 - Casting news - Golden Globe Winner Jennifer Garner has landed a small role in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can which is currently in production in L.A. The actress will play "a classy, gorgeous call girl who catches Abagnale's eye."

In addition, if you are in L.A. or close by for that matter be sure to attend the filming at Scarff street Los Angeles between Adams and 23rd.

  • First Exclusive 'Catch Me' Report

In a first ever exclusive report from the set of Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can, an anonymous individual involved in production sent in some nice tidbits yesterday. The anonymous tipster wrote "I worked as an extra on the first day of filming in L.A. for approximately 12 hours, and the scenes included Leonardo only. We filmed a few scenes in Laguardia airport with Leo. There was approximately 60 extras. Otherwise, filming went great - Spielberg was awesome. As was Leonardo and the rest of the production." Considering it's production length, this particular scene is probably Leo's character Frank getting off the plane and going through security and baggage. Walken may join cat-and-mouse drama
    By DADE HAYES, CHARLES LYONS

The movie biz is greeting the New Year with newfound brio, expediting production on several megabudget pics, the latest being DreamWorks' "Catch Me If You Can."

Christopher Walken is in talks to join the cast of the long-gestating cat-and-mouse drama, which stars Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. Steven Spielberg is helming and producing the pic, which is tentatively set to start production in February in L.A. Other locations still are being scouted.

Talent salaries might have helped push the pic's budget past $75 million going in, but deferments by some parties are believed to be keeping costs somewhat contained. DreamWorks reps would not discuss the budget. The company has made plenty of big-budget titles -- including the $110 million "Gladiator" -- but many have been co-ventures.

Money aside, "Catch Me" figures to be a quick turnaround, as DreamWorks is holding an unspecified holiday release spot for it.

Pic is the only fourth-quarter title currently on the docket for DreamWorks, whose 2002 slate also includes Hanks' teaming with director Sam Mendes, "The Road to Perdition."

The company announced Monday that production is under way on "Old School," a summer comedy helmed by Todd Phillips under the Montecito Picture Co. banner. Toplining are Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn.

Other major pics entering production in the coming weeks are Universal's "The Hulk," Miramax's "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and Paramount's "Timeline." Sequels such as "X-Men 2" and "Terminator 3" are angling for mid-year starts.

The ICM-repped Walken, who will play DiCaprio's father in "Catch," will segue to the DreamWorks pic from "Gigli." Latter pic, under Martin Brest's direction, is in production and stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Spielberg is producing the Revolution-based project with DreamWorks co-head of production Walter Parkes. Sony is distributing domestically.

Adapted by Jeff Nathanson, "Catch Me" is based on the autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr., who holds the distinction as the youngest man ever placed on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

The 1980 memoir recounts Abagnale's exploits as a charlatan and counterfeiter who ran away from home at age 16. From 1964 to 1970, Abagnale cashed $2.5 million in bad checks and impersonated an airline pilot, a stockbroker and even the associate attorney general of Louisiana.

DiCaprio will play Abagnale, Hanks the FBI agent who hunts him down.

Before Spielberg stepped in as director, helmers such as Gore Verbinski, Lasse Hallstrom, Milos Foreman and Cameron Crowe were attached to the project.

The memoir was first optioned in 1990 by Michel Shane and subsequently was developed at Paramount.

  • Jan. 03, 2002 - Actress Ellen Pompeo, who will be seen this year in Brad Silberling's "Baby's in Black," has been cast in the role of Marci who will be the first to take Frank's "virginity".

  • Martin Grove wrote in the January 2 edition of Hollywood Reporter. In an article about upcoming high-profile 2002 films listed by month, he writes:

(November): DreamWorks will have the advantage of multiple superstars when it releases the drama "Catch Me If You Can" (Nov. 27). Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, it looms as one of the holiday season's biggest boxoffice "catches."

  • From spielbergfilms.com: - Shooting Start Date (Source: Frank W. Abagnale, Abagnale and Associates). CATCH ME IF YOU CAN is scheduled to commence filming on February 11th, 2002, with a view to release the film as hoped in the fall or winter (in time for Oscar season).

  • From The DreamWorks fan site just released on December 18, a fact sheet on Catch Me If You Can. This is what it says...
