PONTARDAWE TOWN – A BRIEF HISTORY

Pontardawe Town’s history stretches back to the early period of the 20th Century, when the first Pontardawe side played in the Welsh League. After being disbanded during the war years, the present club was re-formed in 1947 as Pontardawe Athletic.

Two brief spells in the top flight of the Welsh League – in the early sixties and again in the early eighties – were all the club had to show for their efforts before finding themselves in the basement of the Welsh League. Only the lifting of the West Wales Senior Cup in 1983 lifted the gloom, before the club turned itself around and embarked on a period of unrivalled success in the 1990s.

Pontardawe stormed to the Third Division title in 1996, and set their sights firmly on the top division. However, a number of setbacks occurred, including a threat to demote the club to Division Three on ground criteria – the local council’s bureaucratic delays in erecting a covered stand at the Recreation Ground putting their place in Division Two in jeopardy, whilst an eight point deduction and an end of season loss of form cost them promotion on the last day of the season in 1997.

It was the turn of Pontardawe’s Youth team to impress during 1997, as the side won the Welsh Youth Cup and the National Youth League – the club’s emphasis on the youngsters merging together a fine team, and showing great prospects for the club’s future. The following season, 1997/98, saw the club claim the Division 2 title, and take their place in the Welsh League top flight.

1998/99 was a season of consolidation for the re-titled Pontardawe Town, and an eight game unbeaten run at the end of the season saw the club finish in a creditable sixth place. Future ambitions include developing a ground to League of Wales standard, probably at a new location within the town, and taking their place amongst Welsh football’s elite.
