FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is nothing more than a .physical and mental state of relaxation.  Some people might describe it as "a journey to inner peace and tranquility."  You will not be asleep, unconscious, or unaware. You are just going to feel very relaxed. During this relaxed state, you experience heightened awareness and concentration - exactly the opposite of that depicted in some movies and stage shows!  The subconscious is alert and responsive, enabling you to more fully focus and utilize your whole mind.

Will it cause me to relinquish my free will?
Hypnosis cannot make you do anything you don't want to do.  Under hypnosis, you are always aware of everything that is said to you and you will remember everything that happened while you were deeply relaxed. It is extremely safe and pleasant and provides you effective habit control and self-confidence.

Can I be hypnotized?
Nearly anyone can experience some degree of hypnosis, and virtually everyone frequently does.  Daydreams, deep concentration on a book or TV show, or driving 20 miles "without really remembering the road" are examples of hypnotic states.  And we all go through a hypnotic state each day between sleep and waking.

How does hypnosis help me?
It simply enhances your own inner desire and determination.  It helps you utilize your own inner strengths and hidden capabilities.  For many the results are astounding and often seem to occur "automatically"

What is the hypnotherapist's role?
The therapist is there to guide you and to help you achieve your goals.  How long before I see results?  Each person is different. It cannot always be expected that just one session with a hypnotherapist will completely eliminate a habit that took years to develop, although it does sometimes happen.  For most people, the suggestions for positive improvement need to be reinforced, even with those who are highly receptive to change.

Is hypnosis the same as sleep?
Hypnosis and sleep are not the same.  In the hypnotic state blood circulation as well as cardiac and respiratory action are nearer to that of a waking state than to normal sleep.  The basal rate of metabolism decreases 10 to 15 percent during natural sleep, which does not occur in hypnosis.  Here are some other significant differences between them:
NATURAL SLEEP - Focal awareness or consciousness is bypassed and only the subconscious mind is active.
HYPNOSIS -Consciousness is intensified.  Both the conscious and subconscious minds work together, with the subconscious having a dominant role.

MYTH vs. FACT

Myth: You lose control under hypnosis.
Fact: You are always under your own control while in the hypnotic state.  You will not do or say anything, nor accept any suggestion, which is not normal and acceptable to you in the non-hypnotic state.

Myth: Hypnosis is mind control.
Fact: Obviously, hypnosis is not mind control because, were it so, there would be no need for jails or prisons and all hypnotists would be very wealthy.

Myth: You lose contact while under hypnosis.
Fact: While in the hypnotic state, you are always aware of everything said to you and everything you do.  When you emerge from the hypnotic state, you will remember all that happened.  By definition, a hypnotic state is "a state of aroused concentration, heightened awareness and elevated alertness; a deep state of relaxation."  It is a very pleasurable experience, as well as a path to inner peace.

NATURAL SLEEP - A person does not hear or respond to vocal instructions or suggestions.
HYPNOSIS - The person hears everything and is capable of responding.

NATURAL SLEEP - The knee jerk reflex is greatly diminished and in some cases, entirely absent.
HYPNOSIS - The knee reacts normally.

NATURAL SLEEP - Limbs become flaccid from lack of activity and the hands are not able to hold anything.
HYPNOSIS - In the hypnotic state, limbs can be made stiff and rigid.  Objects can be grasped and held for any length of time, and the subject can even hold a pen or pencil and write while under hypnosis.

Everyone is expected to endure, and even succeed, while maintaining full function, full control and complete happiness within their lives. It is an extremely tall order.

Fortunately; there is a way to better meet life's challenges. Through the proper use of hypnosis, you have the ability to access a very powerful and helpful tool: your own subconscious mind. This is where some might say the "higher" system of the mind lies, and most people are unaware of how much power it contains. At Potentials Unlimited, our job is to help you tap this natural power to reach your potentials, which truly are unlimited.

The ability of the subconscious also can be harnessed to help overcome addictions and illness.  Clinical observation of patients by private physicians, as well as research by hospitals, the National Institute of Health, and other research centers show hypnosis to be effective and/or helpful in the treatment of maladies such as migraine headaches, shingles, tinnitus, arthritis and back pain, to name but a few.
