News & Notes Williams, Winkler named DB coaches
J.D. Williams, who played on four Buffalo Bills Super Bowl teams in the 1990's, and Jim Winkler have been named assistant football coaches at San Jose State University. The announcement was made by Dave Baldwin, head football coach at the school. Both Williams and Winkler will be defensive backfield coaches. Williams will coach the cornerbacks and Winkler will coach the safeties. Williams comes to San Jose State after serving as the defensive backs coach at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in 1998. He began his coaching career at Fresno State University in 1997. The 1989 graduate of Fresno State was a two-time All-America defensive back. He was a 1988 honorable mention All-America choice as a junior and a third-team Associated Press selection his senior year. Williams became the school's first National Football League first-round draft choice when the Buffalo Bills chose him with the 16th pick in the 1990 draft. His National Football League career lasted seven seasons. He was named to the NFL's All-Rookie team in 1990. Williams was a member of the Buffalo Bills through the 1993 season. He went on to play for the Arizona Cardinals in 1994, the Carolina Panthers in 1995 and the San Francisco 49ers in 1996. Winkler is in his second season on the San Jose State staff. He was a graduate assistant in 1998 working with the defensive unit. The 1994 graduate of San Diego State coached four seasons at the University of Redlands before moving to San Jose State last season. Williams and Winkler replace Brian Stewart, who took an assistant coaching position at the University of Missouri. With the promotion of Winkler and the hiring of Williams, SJSU head coach Baldwin also reassigned other coaching assignments on the defensive side. Todd Throckmorton remains as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. Barry Sacks, who coached defensive linemen and special teams in 1998, will be responsible solely for the defensive line. Jesse Williams, who coached defensive linemen and special teams last year, too, will be the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. Drevno named assistant Tim Drevno, a member of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas football coach staff last season, has accepted an assistant football coaching position at San Jose State University. The announcement was made by Dave Baldwin, the Spartans' head football coach. Drevno, the new offensive line coach at San Jose State, replaces Bob Bostad, who took a similar position at the University of New Mexico. The new Spartan assistant coach coached the running backs at UNLV in 1998. He was at Montana State University during the 1993 through 1997 seasons as an assistant coach. He coached the running backs, tight ends and offensive line in his five seasons at the Big Sky Conference school. Drevno, who turns 30-years-old on March 20, began his coaching career in 1991 as a graduate assistant at Cal State Fullerton. The 1992 graduate of Cal State Fullerton played two seasons as an offensive guard on the Titan football teams. Baldwin hires two assistants Steve Graf, formerly a head football coach at West Texas State University, and Carl Dean, a graduate assistant at San Jose State University, have been named assistant football coaches at San Jose State University. The announcement was made by Dave Baldwin, the Spartans' head coach. Graf will be the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He replaces Steve Hagen, who accepted the offensive coordinator position at the University of California. Dean will be the wide receivers coach for the San Jose State University football team and replaces Matt Lubick who was named the recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach at Oregon State University. The 42-year-old Graf has 10 years of experience as an offensive coordinator. He served as the offensive coordinator at West Texas State University in 1987 before he was named head coach at the school in 1988. In his three seasons as head coach, he also served as the team's offensive coordinator. The Buffaloes, competing at the NCAA Division II level, were ranked first, third and tenth, respectively, in passing offense from 1988 through 1990. West Texas State compiled a 6-25 win-loss record during his head coaching tenure and suspended its football program prior to the 1991 season. The new San Jose State offensive coordinator moved to Mount Senario College in Ladysmith, Wisc., in 1992 and was the school's athletics director, offensive coordinator on the football coaching staff and a faculty member in the department of exercise science. The NAIA school won conference championships in six of his seven seasons. A 1981 graduate of California Lutheran College, Graf began his football coaching career that same year as an assistant coach and freshman head coach at his alma mater. He moved to West Texas State in 1985 and was an assistant coach for three seasons, the last as offensive coordinator, before adding the head coaching responsibilities in 1988. Dean, 25-years-old, was a graduate assistant on the Spartan football staff the last two seasons working with the team's offensive unit. The 1997 graduate of San Jose State was the team's starting quarterback in 1995 and 1996. He is one of only four Spartan quarterbacks to complete at least 60 percent of his passes in a season when he connected on 60.3 percent of his attempts in 1995. The two-time nationally-ranked quarterback in total offense ranks sixth on the Spartan career lists in all major passing categories throwing for 4,663 yards and 24 touchdowns in his two seasons. The addition of Graf and the promotion of Dean still leaves two vacancies on the San Jose State University football coaching staff. |
