Looking Backward from 2000 to 1887
Mood:  surprised
Topic: Winter Break Books
So I finally finished the first book that I was reading for winter break. It was Looking Backward from 2000 to 1887. I first came across this book when my girlfriend had to read it for her utopia class. I didn't read it then, but I became familiar with the premise. When I was looking for cheap digital books to buy, this one came up and I decided to get it.

I began reading today at the airport and just finished now. I didn't read it straight through as I had a bunch of times where I was unable to read for various reasons.

Quick premise: Just like another literary hero whose name currently evades me, our protagonist ends up sleeping for 100 years and wakes up in a utopia.

I'll have to admit that I was prepared to call it predictable and boring. Well, the ending surprised me. First what I liked about it:
  • It is VERY descriptive in what this new society entails. Unlike Karl Marx who was very vague in how how a communist society would actually work, the author of this book (who wrote it around the time of 1887) is very descriptive as to how such a society would work.
  • The characters are quite entertaining.
  • The book is not too long
  • There are a few surprises and plot twists
  • It was a lot of fun to read how people spoke back them. For example, instead of saying that he was tired, the protagonist proclaims that he was "fagged out".

    Now what I didn't like:
  • while there were some surprises and plot twists, there was a lot that was very predictable.
  • sometimes the descriptions go on for so long that the book can get a bit boring
  • there really isn't much action - almost the entire book is dialogue about how the new society works

I'm not going to say too much more because it wasn't too involved of a book as the philosophy book will be.

My reccomendation: If you are the sort who falls asleep when they read boring books, then this is not for you at all. There are many parts that take some patience to get through. It's can be ranked as a cute love story, and was billed as such when it first came out. Still, that's secondary to the author's true point of describing the utopia. No doubt the author was called all sorts of nasty things like anarchist, communist and socialist when the book first came out. If you liked books on utopias and negatopias such as 1984, A Brave New World, and A Clockwork Orange, then you may like this one. However, like I said, be warned that while the others were high on drama and a little lower on the organizaiton of society, this one's the opposite.
