Legolas, meaning "green-leaves", comes from Mirkwood, which was once and then again known as Greenwood the Great, where his father Thranduil resides as King of the Silvan.  Legolas becomes the only Elf companion of the Fellowship of the Ring.  His archery skills, keen eyesight and swift-footedness are important and welcome additions to the party of nine.  He is described as "fair of face beyond the measure of Men" and "has bright elven-eyes with his long slender hand".  After the War of the Ring, Legolas travels with Gimli the Dwarf, with whom he remains life-long friends.

Something draws near.  I can feel it."
Fellowship of the Ring, 2001

"Gulls!  They are flying far inland.  A wonder they are to me and a trouble to my heart... The Sea!  Alas!  I have not yet beheld it.  But deep in the hearts of all my kindred lies the sea-longing, which is perilous to stir.  Alas! for the gulls.  No peace shall I have again under beech or elm."
Return of the King, J.R.R.Tolkien
