Was it only last summer that we first heard the groovy, infectious pop of Toronto's own b4-4? Although it may seem hard to believe, it was. With the catchy hit "Get Down," twins Dan and Ryan Kowarsky and friend Ohad Einbinder seized the Top 10 charts and pop-stardom in one fell swoop.
It's been a crazy ride for the three guys, who were signed two years ago after daring to walk right into Sony Music headquarters looking to audition. They were rewarded for their skills and daring with a record contract and have been on the move ever since. In fact, it's the kind of experience that has been known to give young guys like the b4-4 trio swollen heads.
Ryan, though, chuckles at the suggestion. "We've got our family to keep us grounded," he assures. "A lot of the people in the business can get a bit of a head, but we don't at all. We're just having a great time doing what we love to do."
With the Psykoblast tour this summer, b4-4 find themselves on the road for their first cross-country tour. A summer tour is a new experience for the band, but one they're completely psyched for.
"It's gonna be a lot of fun, I'm really excited about it," Ryan says. "We're always either rehearsing or in the studio doing new stuff or we're performing," he says, adding, "There's nothing like performing and getting in front of a crowd that's screaming for you. It's and adrenaline rush."
And even though critics like MuchMusic's Ed The Sock have sometimes given the boys a hard time because of their buff physiques and funky hairstyles, the boys don't carry any grudges.
"We never came into this saying that we weren't going to struggle or that it was going to be an easy ride," says Ryan, who is quick to point out that, "It's always better to be talked about than not," and that the negativity that they've faced doesn't bother them at all.
After the tour, the band plans on getting back to work on their second album, which they hope to have released by December.
"It's going really, really well, " says Ryan. "I think it's going to show a different side of b4-4." Big things lurk in the future and the boys know it.
"b4-4 is going to be all over the world in the next year," says Ryan with determination. "That's what we've wanted to do since the beginnning and we're not going to stop until we do that."
