Chavez Ravine is the name used to describe a
community that compromised three
neighborhoods. The area known for the last
forty years as home to L.A. Dodgers. Named
for *Julian
Chavez who obtained the land in 1840.

In the late thirties the City of Los Angeles
was looking for an area that would be used
to build public housing. It was deemed by
the city council at the time that the area
they referred to as Chavez Ravine, otherwise
known to the neighbors as Palo Verde, La
Loma and Bishop was a prime spot for this
project.

It was all about land management, the city
leaders felt that the land in our community
was not being fully utilized. They wanted
more housing on the land because the housing
would generate more tax dollars for the
municipality.
To most people, Chavez Ravine is synonymous
with Dodger Stadium. To the people that
lived here, it was home.

*He
was a prominent civic leader in pueblo de
Los Angeles during the last century.
