SUBJECT:
4EAT ATF AUXILIARY FILTER KIT AND HOSE INSTALLATION

An Automatic Transmission Fluid Filter has been introduced for installation on Subaru SVX models. The filter traps ATF contaminants which may cause sticking of the spool valves in the transmission. This results in deterioration of gear shift characteristics, for example: shift shock or delayed upshifts. The modified hoses ensure a more positive fit to prevent hose seepage.

The filter is designed to be maintenance free under normal driving conditions. It will not require periodic replacement. The only time replacement is necessary is in case of a transmission failure which leads to excessive metal contamination of the fluid.

CAUTION: When installing this kit, it is important to install all hoses in their correct positions. Failure to do so may result in major internal damage to the transmission.

TOOLS NEEDED

No special tools are required, only the following hand tools: a tray or catch pan for drained ATF, # 2 Phillips screwdriver, 3/8 drive torque wrench, 318 drive ratchet wrench with 14 mm socket, 10 mm socket, 8 mm socket, a pair of pliers, oil feeder can and a safety blowgun with a compressed air source.

NOTE: ALWAYS USE THE APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. EXAMPLES: SAFETY GLASSES, GLOVES, ETC. WHEN PERFORMING THE FLUSHING AND FILTER INSTALLATION.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1 Quart of Automatic Transmission Fluid (Dexron II type)

ATF Oil Filter Kit, Part Number 31099AA370, which consists of the following parts:

1) Filter 5) Three (3) 10 mm x 30 mm bolts
2) Filter clamp protector 6) Five (5) hoses
3) Filter clamp bracket 7) Five (5) hose clamps
4) Band clamp (retainer) 8) Hose chafe protector

COOLER BACK FLUSHING PROCEDURE

ALWAYS FLUSH THE RADIATOR COOLER BEFORE INSTALLING THE FILTER KIT.

Do Not Bypass This Procedure.

a) Raise the vehicle and remove the 7 bolts, securing the front lower splash guard. Place a drain pan under the hoses to collect drained ATF.

b) Disconnect ATF cooler hose (A) and (B) from the steel pipes. (See Figure 1.)
c) Using a can of ATF and a funnel, fill cooler hose (B).
d) Cooler inlet hose (A) should be aimed down into the drain pan.

e) Apply compressed air into hose (B) using a safety blow gun to back flush the ATF cooler (required air pressure 57 lbs. or higher). Repeat this procedure three times or more as needed. (See Figure 2.)

PRE-INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR FILTER AND HOSE KIT

a) Remove and discard the cooler inlet and outlet hoses at the radiator. Remove the two hoses on the transmission side. Save the clamps for reuse, however, some new clamps may be required. Then remove and discard the three bolts securing the left tie down hook. (See Figure 3.)

FILTER BRACKET INSTALLATION

a) Place the tie-down hook back into position and install the filter bracket on top of the tie-down hook. Using the three "new" bolts supplied in the kit, secure the bracket and torque the bolts to 50 (ft.lbs.).

FILTER HOSE INSTALLATION

a) Install hose (D) on the "out" pipe of the filter and hose (C) onto the "in" pipe of the filter. Make sure the chafe protector is in its correct position. (See Figure 4.)

FILTER TO BRACKET INSTALLATION

a) Position the filter with the arrow pointing to the left frame rail. The outlet hose must be on top. Clamp the filter to the bracket and make sure the clamp is around the rubber protector on the filter. (See Figure 5.)

FILTER OUTLET HOSE TO COOLER INSTALLATION

a) Install hose (D) onto the cooler inlet pipe of the radiator. Secure the hose in the clip on the radiator. (See Figure 6.)

FILTER INLET HOSE TO TRANSMISSION PIPING INSTALLATION

a) Install hose (C) onto the transmission outlet pipe. (See Figure 6.)
b) Make sure the chafe protector is in its correct position over top of the lower radiator hose.

COOLER OUTLET BOSE TO TRANSMISSION PIPING INSTALLATION

a) Install the cooler outlet hose (B),from the radiator outlet pipe to the transmission inlet piping. Reuse the clip which holds the inlet and outlet hose together. (See Figure 7.)

TRANSMISSION SIDE INLET AND OUTLET HOSE INSTALLATION

a) Install the two remaining hoses on the inlet and outlet pipes on the transmission side. (See Figure 8.)

STARTING AND INSPECTION

a) Start the engine and inspect the filter and hoses for leak. Tighten the hose clamps as necessary. Also, make sure all hoses are not kinked or restricted in any way. Check the transmission oil level and add, if necessary.
b) Reinstall the front lower splash guard in the reverse order of removal.
