1864 Ft. Livingston, LA

January 1 Friday: I was on police up the island a getting wood all day. The weather was fine and light winds. Me and David Bryant of Co. D. 161 NY had a grate drunk together.
January 2 Saturday: I was in my room nearly all day a reading novels and other books. The weather was fine all day with light winds to the west.
January 3 Sunday: There was inspection at 8 o’clock in the morning and dress parade at sunset. I read novels all day in my room.
January 4 Monday: It rained all day and I staid in the quarters all day and wrote letters and told stories and some of them was lies for all I know.
January 5 Tuesday: I was on guard and it rained all day and I had a bad time to post my relief. It was cold in the guard house.
January 6 Wednesday: I was relieved from guard and it rained all day with the wind to the east and it was cold enough to freeze a man to death.
January 7 Thursday: I was on police in the forenoon up the island a getting wood. I was on drill in the afternoon on the big guns.
January 8 Friday: It rained all day and the weather was cold and I done nothing to speak of.
January 9 Saturday: The weather the same. The wind to the east and cold rains. I laid still all day in the quarters.
January 10 Sunday: The weather the same. The wind to the east and cold rains. I done nothing but to lay abed asleep.
January 11 Monday: I was on guard. It rained in the forenoon. Cleared off at 10 o’clock and was cold that night.
January 12 Tuesday: I was relieved from guard and it rained all day and I stayed in my quarters all day.
January 13 Wednesday: I was on police all day up the island a getting wood for the fort and officers house.
January 14 Thursday: I was up the island a getting oysters and we never got back until dark and then we had a stew.
January 15 Friday: I was on fatigue all day a hauling up a big stone to put in the alleyway in the fort.
January 16 Saturday: I was on guard and the weather was fine but rather cold at night in the guard house.
January 17 Sunday: I was relieved from guard and I played cards all day and lost 5 dollars and that is not so bad as I have done.
January 18 Monday: I was on police in the forenoon up the island a getting wood and I played cards in the afternoon.
January 19 Tuesday: I was on drill all the forenoon and part of the afternoon. I played cards at night.
January 20 Wednesday: I played cards and read novels all day and sung songs and danced at night, until taps blat.
January 21 Thursday: I was on guard. The weather was rather cold and we had no door to the guard house. That is the way to live.
January 22 Friday: I was relieved from guard and I read novels and played card all day. That is the way we spend our time.
January 23 Saturday: I was on police up the island a getting wood all day. The steamer arrived from New Orleans and took away the 12th Con Vols at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
January 24 Sunday: I read novels all day. I read the Man a War’s Main Grudge all through and played cards at night.
January 25 Monday: I was on guard. The weather was fine all day and all night. I had a good time with the boys for I told stories about old Crain.
January 26 Tuesday: I was relieved from guard and I read novels and played cards all day and at night too.
January 27 Wednesday: I was on police up the island all day a getting wood for the fort and for the officers.
January 28 Thursday: I read novels and played cards all day and played cards until 9 o’clock at night and then I went to bed.
January 29 Friday: It rained all day with the wind to the sou’west and it was a cold rain.
January 30 Saturday: I was on guard. The weather was clear and cold and we all like to froze to death in guardhouse.
January 31 Sunday: I was relieved from guard. The steamer arrived from New Orleans and we had a dress parade and Corporal Henry C. Peaslee was reduced to the ranks as a private soldier.
February 1 Monday: I was on police up the island all day a getting wood and I played cards at night until 9 o’clock and then I went to bed.
February 2 Tuesday: There was a steamer run into Fort Livingston. Her name was the Sanora of New Orleans. She was out of wood and water and I went a seining and sold the fish to the steamboat.

February 3 Wednesday: The weather was cold and I got wood for the steamboat in the afternoon. I had plenty of bananas to eat for she had a load of them.
February 4 Thursday: I was on guard and I had H. E. Peaslee on with me as a private. The first guard he took as a private for over two years. He was broke disobeying orders.
February 5 Friday: I was relieved from guard and I played cards all day and lost 20 dollars and then I stopped playing.
February 6 Saturday: I was on police all day up the island a getting wood for the fort and for the officers.
February 7 Sunday: I was on inspection at 8 o’clock in the morning and on dress parade at sunset. The rest part of the day I read novels.
February 8 Monday: I was up the island a getting oysters in the forenoon. In the afternoon I enlisted for three years more or during the war.
February 9 Tuesday: I done nothing in the forenoon. In the afternoon I went up island a hunting for shells.
February 10 Wednesday: I was on guard and we eat oysters until 12 o’clock at night. The moon got up at 11 o’clock and it was cloudy towards morning. The wind to the east.
February 11 Thursday: I was relieved from guard and I stayed around all day and I done nothing.
February 12 Friday: I was on police up the island a getting wood. Went a gunning up the island and shot one turkey buzzard.
February 13 Saturday: I have been cleaning up for inspection in the forenoon and I played cards in the afternoon.
February 14 Sunday: After inspection in the morning I went on guard. I had bread and milk for dinner. Had oysters, fish, cabbage, eggs for supper and eggs in the night.
February 15 Monday: The wind blew very heavy from the sou’west and it rained in the afternoon. The steamer arrived from New Orleans last night. The boys stole 12 dozen of eggs from a French man.
February 16 Tuesday: Today I am on police a getting wood. The steamer started for New Orleans at 8 o’clock in the morning and next the little steamers in the afternoon with the D.R.
February 17 Wednesday: The wind to the north and it is very cold. I laid around all day and done nothing but tell stories.
February 18 Thursday: The weather very cold with the wind to the north and it snowed all day and the boys all played cards today.
February 19 Friday: I was on guard and the boys licked a niger and old Mother Pop stole corn from the teamsters and I took her up to the captain’s under a guard.
February 20 Saturday: I was relieved from guard and I got a pass to go a gunning and I went out in the perogue and got upset in the bay.
February 21 Sunday: The steamer arrived from New Orleans and brought 1 Co. of nigers and we are relieved from this post. At night the boys broke up their bunks and burned them.
February 22 Monday: Packing up in the forenoon for the city. At 12 o’clock we fired a salute for Washington’s Birthday.
February 23 Tuesday: We got on board the boat at 8 o’clock in the morning and we started for New Orleans at 9 o’clock. The weather very pleasant all day. Got at Algiers at 12 at night.
February 24 Wednesday: Stopped in Algiers all day and all the boys that drink got drunk. At sunset John Hanson and Peasley and me got a pass and went to New Orleans and stopped all night.
February 25 Thursday: This morning I got back from New Orleans at 1 o’clock in the day and stayed on the ground the rest of the day. At night, Tom McDonald fell off the wharf at Black landing.
February 26 Friday: I was on guard at the store and all the boys drinked pretty free. Hen Ramsdell and Ad Wakefield fought and we was mustered in.
February 27 Saturday: This morning I was relieved from guard and stayed on the ground until 6 o’clock and then I went to New Orleans and stopped all night.
February 28 Sunday: Last night I stopped at Mrs. Hubbard’s and came over at 12 o’clock today. Stopped on the ground until after inspection at 5 o’clock and then I went down to the village and the boys all got drunk.
February 29 Monday: Had a muster this morning at 8 o’clock and then I went to New Orleans and stopped all night and had a great time.
March 1 Tuesday: I stopped all night with Sarah and laid abed until 2 o’clock in the day and I went to Mrs. Hubbard’s.
March 2 Wednesday; I left New Orleans and went home to go on guard and it was not my turn and I went back to New Orleans.
March 3 Thursday: Stopped last night at Mrs. Hubbard’s. Went to a ball and stopped until 12 o’clock at night. Today at 10 o’clock we started for Sulphur City. Arrived there at 5 o’clock at night.
March 4 Friday: We slept out on the ground last night. This morning we put up our tents. The 163 NY arrived here today. I went out to the 13 Maine regiment to see the Lubec boys. Nothing new in the evening.
March 5 Saturday: I spent the forenoon a cleaning my gun and washing up my clothes. The weather very hot all day. The weather is very cold this evening. Nothing new today.
March 6 Sunday: The weather is very fine today. Laid around all day a doing nothing. The 13th regiment turned in their tents and got ready for a march.
March 7 Monday: The 16th arrived this morning at 2 o’clock. We got up at sunrise and got our breakfast and turned in our tents and marched for Franklin at 11 o’clock. Halted at sunset for the night. Marched 14 miles.
March 8 Tuesday: Started this morning again at 7 o’clock and arrived at Franklin at 12 o’clock in the day. Got our dinner and laid down to rest. Put up a tent and turned in for the night. Marched 15 miles today.
March 9 Wednesday: This morning at day light it commenced to rain. We had pea soup for dinner. We put up our tent and it rained all day and we got all wet.
March 10 Thursday: It cleared off this morning and the sun came out pretty warm. We had a battalion today at 2 o’clock. We had a dress rehearsal at 1/2 past 5 o’clock.
March 11 Friday: The weather is very pleasant today. We drew our shelter tents today at 12 o’clock and put them up. Had a dress parade at 5 o’clock at night.
March 12 Saturday: Today the weather is fine. We had a brigade drill from 10 o’clock to 1/2 past 12 o’clock. Nothing more doing through the day. Light winds to the west.
March 13 Sunday: The weather is fine and we had a general inspection at 10 o’clock in the day. The weather very hot in the middle of the day. A dress parade at sunset.
March 14 Monday: I got up early in the morning and went and got a load of moss for my camp. We had a small shower of rain in the forenoon. Had a general inspection at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
March 15 Tuesday: At sun rise we struck tents and at 8 o’clock we started on the march. We halted at 2 o’clock. We marched 18 miles and we pitched tents for the night.
March 16 Wednesday: Started at 7 o’clock in the morning and halted 5 o’clock for the night. Pitched our tents. We marched through New Iberia. We marched 18 miles today.
March 17 Thursday: Started at 7 o’clock this morning. We halted at 2 o’clock at Vermillion. Have to stop for the night. We marched 18 miles today. The night is very cold, frost now and then.
March 18 Friday: We started again at 6 o’clock and halted at 3 o’clock. We marched 18 miles. We put up our tents. The weather was the warmest today that it has been since we were on the march.
March 19 Saturday: Started at 5 o’clock in the morning. Marched through Oppolusus and Washington. We marched 18 miles. We halted for the night at Bayou Bluff.
March 20 Sunday: We laid by all day and rested. The 13th Army Corps arrived at 1/2 past 2 o’clock and camped next to us. We fell in line and gave them 3 cheers. Inspection at 1/2 past 5 o’clock.
March 21 Monday: We turned out at 6 o’clock and started at 7 o’clock and halted at 1 o’clock for the night. It rained all day but after we put up our tents it rained awful.
March 22 Tuesday: We started at 6 o’clock and marched until 2 in the afternoon. We marched 18 miles. The roads very bad, mud very deep all along the roads.
March 23 Wednesday: Marched at 7 o’clock and marched until 2 o’clock. Marched 15 miles. The roads is better than they were yesterday.
March 24 Thursday: We started at 6 o’clock and halted at 1 o’clock. It rained by showers all the forenoon but from 12 until 1 o’clock I never saw it rain harder in my life. We marched 15 miles.
March 25 Friday: We started at 7 o’clock this morning. Arrived at Alexandria at 1 o’clock. There was 15 thousand Calvalry here in camp when we arrived. We marched 16 miles today. The whole march, 190 miles.
March 26 Saturday: The weather is very hot today. We discharged our guns today at 12 o’clock and then cleaned up for inspection. We had a good potato soup for supper.
March 27 Sunday: We had an inspection at 9 o’clock this morning. Had a dress parade at 1/2 past 5 o’clock. The weather very fine all day but it is cloudy at sunset. Looks like rain.
March 28 Monday: I woke up at 3 o’clock and it was a raining and it rained from 3 to 7 o’clock, the hardest that I ever saw it. At 8 o’clock we left Alexandria for Shreveport. We halted 1/2 past 4 o’clock. We marched 17 miles today.
March 29 Tuesday: We starte this forenoon at 11 o’clock and marched until 4 o’clock. The reason of our short march, the ammunition wagons got stuck in the roads.
March 30 Wednesday: We started at 10 o’clock and marched until 1/2 past 12 o’clock. We marched 7 miles. The weather very warm. We are now marching through the pine woods. We have got a fine camping ground.
March 31 Thursday: We started 8 o’clock. At 2 o’clock we crossed one branch of the Red River on pontoon bridges. We halted at 9 o’clock at night. We marched 20 miles. The weather warm.
April 1 Friday: We started at 11 o’clock and crossed the river at 12 o’clock. We marched 16 miles. The dust flew very bad all day. We caught a sheep apiece for supper.
April 2 Saturday: We started at 8 o’clock today. We passed the 13th Army Corps. They was in camp. We marched through Natchitoch. We are the first union troops that ever marched through there. We halted at 2 o’clock. We marched 6 miles.
April 3 Sunday: The weather is cloudy and rained by showers in the forenoon. Cleared off at 12 o’clock fine. We had an inspection at 2 o’clock. Not much news the rest part of the day.
April 4 Monday: I washed up my clothes this forenoon and I laid down to have a sleep but David Bryant of Co. D. 161 NY came to see me and I lost my sleep.
April 5 Tuesday: We are in camp near Natchitoches. We are stopping here a doing nothing. In the afternoon we fell into line and gave three cheers for General Banks as he passed by.
April 6 Wednesday: At 7 o’clock we struck tents and got ready for the march. We started at 9 o’clock. We was stopped to let the 13 Army Corps to pass by. We halted after dark. Marched 15 miles. I went on picket guard.
April 7 Thursday: We started at 8 o’clock and halted at 5 o’clock. We marched 20 miles. It rained all the afternoon and the walking was bad. We camped at Pleasant Hill for the night.
April 8 Friday: We started at 8 o’clock and we halted at 2 o’clock and drew rations. I was sick and only went 8 miles. The advance is fighting the rebels. The 15th not in the fight.
April 9 Saturday: Last night I went with the wagon train 8 miles to the rear. In the morning I went back to Pleasant Hill. The rebels pitched into us from 3 o’clock until dark. We fought the rebels and beat them.
April 10 Sunday: This morning we retreated at 2 o’clock and we halted at 1 o’clock. We marched 25 miles. We got our whiskey and some coffee for the first time since the fight began. Then we laid down and went to sleep.
April 11 Monday: This morning at 5 o’clock we commenced our retreat again and we arrived at Red River at 4 o’clock. We marched 15 miles. The weather was very hot all day.
April 12 Tuesday: We are encamped at Grande Gore Red River. We are laying back now to have a rest. To night we had an undress parade and Colonel Dier gave us a speech and we gave him three cheers.
April 13 Wednesday: We are still at Grande Gore laying in camp. There was a false alarm. Lazy today. We fell into line but we did not stop long. The weather is warm and pleasant.
April 14 Thursday: This morning our regiment went out on picket guard. I was on reserve. We laid about all day and there was nothing happened of any amount. I went out on picket.
April 15 Friday: This morning the weather is fine. Today at 12 o’clock I was relieved from picket guard. Our regiment was detailed to chop wood and to load on boats at the landing.
April 16 Saturday: The weather is fine today. This forenoon I was a cleaning up my gun. This afternoon the regiment was turned out to lug logs to build up a breastwork. Knocked off at sunset.
April 17 Sunday: This morning we was turned out to build breastwork. This afternoon we turned out again and worked until supper time. The weather was very hot all day.
April 18 Monday: This morning we turned out again and went to work on the breast works. We knocked off work this afternoon at 4 o’clock. The weather is very hot all day.
April 19 Tuesday: Today the boys was at work on the breast works. I was on regimental guard. The weather is very hot all day and I was sick this afternoon with a pain in my head but at sunset I felt better.
April 20 Wednesday: This morning I was relieved from guard. We had inspection of arms this morning at 9 o’clock. We fell in at 12 o’clock and discharged our guns. The weather warm all day.
April 21 Thursday: This morning I was taken sick and was sick all day. We had orders to leave at 5 o’clock but we did not go. The weather is very warm all day.
April 22 Friday: We left Grande Gore last night at 2 o’clock. We are taken our back tracks for Alexandria. We halted at 9 o’clock at night. We marched 36 miles and I tell you we was tired.

April 23 Saturday: We left this morning at 6 o’clock. At 12 o’clock the rebels pitched into us at Pain River. We crossed Pain River at 3 o’clock at night. We marched 13 miles today.
April 24 Sunday: We started this morning at day light. We were 5 miles in the pine woods. We took the Red River road so as to avoid the rest of the pine woods. We marched 15 miles today.
April 25 Monday: This morning we started at 2 o’clock. We arrived at Alexandria at 4 o’clock. We marched hard and the dust flew very thick. We marched 19 miles today.
April 26 Tuesday: We are now in camp near Alexandria. We are now at work putting up tents and getting ready to stop awhile and have a rest. We had an undress parade at sunset.
April 27 Wednesday: We are now a cleaning up our guns for inspection. A going swimming in the Red River. The weather is warm. One gunboat went over the rapids at 5 o’clock.
April 28 Thursday: This morning the weather is warm and I am on picket guard. The officer of the guard came around about 10 o’clock in the morning. The rebels commenced firing and we retreated back 2 miles and joined our regiments.
April 29 Friday: At 4 o’clock this morning we fell into line under arms and stopped until day light and then we moved a half mile to the right and put up tents. We had inspection of arms at 5 o’clock.
April 30 Saturday: This morning we have been cleaning up for inspection. We had inspection at 12 o’clock and we had muster for pay at sunset. The weather was very warm all day.
May 1 Sunday: Today the weather is very warm and we suffer with the heat in these shelter tents. Our sutler arrived here today with goods. We had dress parade at sunset.
May 2 Monday: Today the weather is pleasant and hot. I have been sick with the chills. We fell in at sunset under arms and laid by them until day light in the morning.
May 3 Tuesday: Today the weather is warm and I have felt better than I did yesterday. We had a dress parade at sunset and that is all we done all day.
May 4 Wednesday: Today the weather is pleasant and warm and nothing doing but to sleep and eat and it is not much we have to eat. Robert Murphy of Co. F. died today.
May 5 Thursday: Today we fell in and marched out about a mile to build breast works. We came back into camp and stopped until 1 o’clock and we went back and worked until night.
May 6 Friday: Today the weather is warm and we laid about the tents until 4 o’clock when we fell into line and went out about 5 miles in the the woods for a guard.
May 7 Saturday: We are still out in the woods yet and we are pretty well out of grub. It is cloudy and looks like rain. We laid around until dark and then we turned in to sleep for the night.
May 8 Sunday: We left the woods where we was on picket guard this morning at 10 o’clock and returned to our camp and we all went in and had a swim. We had a dress parade at sunset.
May 9 Monday: The weather is pleasant this forenoon and we laid around our tents a doing nothing. This afternoon at 4 o’clock we had a battalion drill just to liven up the boys.
May 10 Tuesday: We formed a line this forenoon at 10 o’clock and had a drill. We formed another line at 12 o’clock and went to work unloading a boat loaded with cotton.
May 11 Wednesday: This morning it is cloudy and cold. We had a line formed at 12 o’clock and had orders read to us about the march. We had dress parade at sunset.
May 12 Thursday: Today the weather is very warm. We laid about our tents all day a doing nothing. At sunset we had dress parade and had orders read about the march.
May 13 Friday: Last night at 8 o’clock we struck tents and this morning at 7 o’clock we took up a line of march from Alexandria. We halted at 4 o’clock. We marched 10 miles. I went on picket guard.
May 14 Saturday: We started again this morning at 6 o’clock. We marched along all day very easy and we went into camp at dark. We marched 15 miles today. The weather hot.
May 15 Sunday: We fell in this morning at 7 o’clock and marched until dark and went into camp at Marksville. We marched 10 miles. We were skirmishing in the woods today.
May 16 Monday: We started this morning at 5 o’clock and formed a line of battle at 6 o’clock and had the general orders read to us about Grant flogging Lee. We gave 3 cheers. The fight commenced between the artillery at 7 and ended at 12 o’clock. We marched 12 miles today.
May 17 Tuesday: We started this morning at 8 o’clock and marched until 4 o’clock when we arrived at Chafalier River where we went into camp. We marched 9 miles today. The weather is very hot.
May 18 Wednesday: Today we are still in camp and waiting for orders to move forward. Smith has heard heavy fighting in the rear with his 16 and 77 Army Corps. It rained some this morning.
May 19 Thursday: This forenoon we crossed the Chafalier River in transports and marched 2 miles up the River and went into camp. The weather is very hot today.
May 20 Friday: Today we laid in camp all day but at dark we commenced to march. We marched up the Chaferlier River and to Old River and then we came to Red River landing. Halted at 12 o’clock. Marched 10 miles.
May 21 Saturday: This morning we started again and marched down Old River. We came to the Mississippi River about 4 o’clock and went into camp. We marched 17 miles today.
May 22 Sunday: This morning we started at 6 o’clock and marched 3 miles and went into camp and I went on picket guard. The weather is very pleasant. We are at Morganzia Landing.
May 23 Monday: Today I came off picket guard and I was sick all day. There is not much news a going. The weather is awful hot, we can hardly stop in out tents.
May 24 Tuesday: This morning at 7 o’clock our company went on police to unload a boat that was loaded with oats and corn and we worked until 12 o’clock then we was relieved. This afternoon it rained hard.
May 25 Wednesday: Today I was sick with the chills all day. The weather is very hot. We had a company inspection at 2 o’clock. We have no news of any account.
May 26 Thursday: Today the weather is pleasant. We had a general inspection this morning at 8 o’clock. We done but very little the rest of this day.
May 27 Friday: The weather is nice and cool today. I laid in my tent all day and done nothing. Charles Joslen was tied up to a gun in the Co. street all the forenoon.
May 28 Saturday: This morning I went on regimental guard. It is cloudy all day and there is no news of any account going about camp.
May 29 Sunday: We had regimental inspection this morning at 8 o’clock. I was relieved from guard at 10 o’clock. The weather is pleasant today and we had nothing more to do today.
May 30 Monday: This morning we had orders to draw 2 days rations and be ready to march at any time. We stayed in our tents all day a waiting to leave but did not go. We had a dress parade at 6 o’clock.
May 31 Tuesday: We had a drill one half hour this morning. The weather is fine all day and we laid in our tents the rest part of the day a doing nothing.
June 1 Wednesday: This morning we went on police at 7 o’clock and worked until night a loading the John Groesbeck but we did not work hard.
June 2 Thursday: The weather is fine this forenoon. I had fresh beef soup for dinner and I ate mine with an ox rib this afternoon. It rained very heavy by spells. The 14th Maine regiment arrived here this afternoon.
June 3 Friday: The weather hass been cloudy and rainy all day and the rain beat in through our tent and wet all my things and I have got to sleep wet tonight.
June 4 Saturday: This morning it is cleared off fine and I am on regimental guard. It commenced raining again at 2 o’clock and at dark it cleared off again.
June 5 Sunday: I came off guard this morning at 9 o’clock. We had an inspection at 11 o’clock and a brigade inspection at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The weather was pleasant all day.
June 6 Monday: We went into the woods and got poles to build shades over our tents in the afternoon and it rained by showers all day.
June 7 Tuesday: This morning I went into the woods and peeled bark to build me a shabang. In the afternoon I put up the frame.
June 8 Wednesday: The 2nd Brigade started this morning at 5 o’clock. On a jaunt we marched up Old River 12 miles and halted for the night but we saw no rebels on the road.
June 9 Thursday: We started back home at 8 o’clock. We got into camp at 12 o’clock and there was a good many men got sun stroke on the road.
June 10 Friday: This morning I went out into the woods to get bark and it came on to rain very hard and it rained by heavy showers all day but I worked on my tent all day.
June 11 Saturday: This morning at 9 o’clock I went on picket guard. The weather is pleasant this forenoon. General review this afternoon at 2 o’clock and it rained as hard as I ever saw it.
June 12 Sunday: I came off picket guard this morning at 9 o’clock. I came into camp and went in a swimming and in the afternoon it rained awful hard. The mud is bad.
June 13 Monday: Today the weather is fine and no rain. I stopped around the tents all day a doing nothing. Today is the first day of this month that has passed without rain.
June 14 Tuesday: This morning at 1/2 past 7 we struck tents and moved 1/2 of a mile farther back from the river. At 3 o’clock this afternoon we had a general review for General Sickles.
June 15 Wednesday: This morning I went into the woods and got stuff for my tent and I have spent the most part of the day at work on my tent. We had a battalion drill at 6 o’c this afternoon.
June 16 Thursday: This morning at 7 o’clock we had a company drill. The weather is pleasant all day. Not much stir about camp. We had a battalion drill at 6 o’clock.
June 17 Friday: This morning at 9 o’clock I went on regimental guard. No news from Grant. Today we have plenty of fatigue. Everyday the weather is fine.
June 18 Saturday: This morning at 1/2 past 6 o’clock we had general inspection. I came back into camp and had the chills and fever nearly all day.
June 19 Sunday: This forenoon I was on police cleaning up camp. We had company inspection at sunset. The weather was pleasant all day. Only one shower of rain.
June 20 Monday: We had company drill this morning at 7 o’clock. After that I went to work a building a shade over my tent. We had battalion drill at 6 o’clock in the evening.
June 21 Tuesday: This morning I went into the woods and got wood for the cook house. In the afternoon we signed the pay rolls for pay. The weather is pleasant all day.
June 22 Wednesday: There was no drill this morning. We got paid this forenoon. I received 32.90. The weather is hot all the time and no wind.
June 23 Thursday: This morning at 7 o’clock we had a battalion drill and we did but little the rest of the day. Adornes Express is at our regiment today.
June 24 Friday: I went to the Dr. this morning and he excused me from duty for the day. The weather is fine and not much news these times.
June 25 Saturday: The regiment had a battalion drill and we had a general review this forenoon and the weather was very hot.
June 26 Sunday: The weather is fine today. I was very sick all day. The boys had plenty of whiskey to drink today but they came out all right.
June 27 Monday: This morning I feel a good deal better than I have for the last week. The regiment drills some in the morning and some at night.
June 28 Tuesday: This morning a company drill from 7 to 8 o’c. The weather is very warm. I had string beans for dinner and potatoes. Battalion drill at 6 o’c.
June 29 Wednesday: This morning I am returned to duty. The regiment had a battalion drill this morning and another at 5 o’c. at night. The weather very warm.
June 30 Thursday: This morning I was out on battalion drill and at 4 o’c. we had a muster. We had a battalion drill at 6 o’c. and dress parade at sunset.
July 1 Friday: We had a battalion drill at 7 in the morning and another drill at 5 in the afternoon and dress parade.
July 2 Saturday: This morning we had a battalion drill at 7. At 12 o’c we had orders to be ready to move at any moment. At 4 in the afternoon we struck tents and went on board the St. Mary.
July 3 Sunday: At 11 last night we started for New Orleans. We arrived there at 4 in the afternoon. We went on shore at dark at Algiers and turned in on the ground for the night.
July 4 Monday: This morning our regiment moved about one quarter of a mile to the right. At 4 we had orders to leave at 6 but did not go until morning.
July 5 Tuesday: We went on board the Exact at 8 o’c in the morning. We crossed the river over to the City and returned back to Algiers at dark.
July 6 Wednesday: The weather is fine today and we are still at Algiers. We started down the river at 3 o’clock and arrived at the mouth of the (river) some time in the night and dropped anchor.
July 7 Thursday: We left the Mississippi River at sun rise for Fortress Munroe. Calm all the forenoon. They put sail on the boat at 5 o’c. Light winds this afternoon.
July 8 Friday: We had inspection this morning at 9 o’c. We took in sail at 12 o’c. Light winds the rest part of the day. A head inspection at sunset.


July 9 Saturday: This morning put sail on the boat again. The wind is light all day. Some showers of rain. Not much sea a going today but we go slow.
July 10 Sunday: This morning we made Cuba at 9 o’c and took in sail until 12 when we put sail on the boat again. Some rain by showers all day.
July 11 Monday: This morning they took the sail off of the boat. The weather is fine all day, light winds. We had inspection this morning at 9 o’c. The weather is fine.
July 12 Tuesday: We had inspection this morning at 9 o’c. The wind is light. The weather is very warm today. No sails in sight today.
July 13 Wednesday: Today the weather is fine. At. 12 o’c we passed Charleston harbor and spoke a gunboat. Her lattitude was 84=86 > longitude 77=50.
July 14 Thursday: Today the weather is fine. At 12 o’c the gunboat, Connecticut hove us to and sent a boat on board of us at sunset. It commenced to rain and blow.
July 15 Friday: This morning the weather looks very bad. It is raining very hard and the sea is running high. At 10 o’c the rain stopped. We are off Cape Hatteras. The sea still runs high.
July 16 Saturday: We made land this morning at day light and then they hove her head off shore again. Made the land again before dark. The wind blew a gale.
July 17 Sunday: Last night at dark we made Cape Henry light and we had to burn bacon to get by. We anchored in the Chesapeake Bay. This morning we ran into Fortress Munroe. At 12 we started up the James River. The sun sat pleasant tonight.
July 18 Monday: The weather is fine. This morning we arrived at City Point. This morning at 8 o’c the boat moored a piece further up river and we went into camp near City Point. Rainy at sunset.
July 19 Tuesday: This morning it commenced to rain and it rained all day. The 12 CV arrived here today and 3 companies of the 13th Maine.
July 20 Wednesday: Today it is pleasant and very warm. We are now in camp at Bermuda Hundreds. We have roll call at AM and one at 1 PM and one at 6 PM each day.
July 21 Thursday: Today the weather is pleasant. The 12 Maine arrived here today. We had dress parade at 6 PM. There is not much news from the front today.
July 22 Friday: Today the weather is fine. The rebels made a raid on our front lines that is laid across the James River and destroyed part of them.
July 23 Saturday: The weather is pleasant today. There is not much news a going. Today part of Co. A arrived here from Washington and part of the 41 PV regiment came with them.
July 24 Sunday: After roll call this morning I went down to the landing and stopped until 12 and there is nothing new. At 6 o’clock we had inspection and it commenced to rain and it rained all night.
July 25 Monday: This morning it cleared off fine again. Corporal McCann went to the front today and I took his place on guard. We had dress parade at 6 PM.
July 26 Tuesday: The weather is fine today. This forenoon I stopped around camp. After dinner I went to the river and had a wash. At 3 o’clock we started for the front. We went into camp at dark and at 9 PM we had orders to march back.
July 27 Wednesday: This morning at 1 AM we went on board the USS transport Schnechtedy and at sunrise we sailed for Washington. At dark they anchored in the mouth of the Potomac River.
July 28 Thursday: This morning at day light we started up the river. At 2 PM we arrived at Washington City. We went on shore and marched 8 miles and stopped for the night.
July 29 Friday: This morning at sunrise we turned out and got breakfast and at 10 AM we struck tents and move up to the right of the brigade and went into camp again. A Co. inspection at sunset.
July 30 Saturday: The weather is fine. Today at 1 PM we had orders to march at 5 PM. At 5 PM we marched back to Washington and took the cars at 11 PM and went within 15 miles of Baltimore and stopped all night.
July 31 Sunday: This morning at sunrise we took the Ohio rail road and went out to Hardrock and just got out of the cars and left our knapsacks and marched back 8 miles on the Washington road to meet the wagon train.
August 1 Monday: This morning at 8 o’clock we started back. Our regiment was guard in the rear of the wagon train. We went back to Nanchez Junction and went into camp. This place is close to Frederick, MD.
August 2 Tuesday: Today we had news from Petersburg and that Grant was defeated. The rest of our brigade joined us today at 4 PM. We are still in camp at Monocacy Bridge.

August 3 Wednesday: Today the weather is fine. I washed clothes in the forenoon and cleaned my gun in the afternoon. Today I saw my cousin William O’Brine in the 6th Maine.
August 4 Thursday: This morning we had Company drill for 1/2 hour and we had great talk about going home. At about 4 o’clock our furlough came and them tht had not re-enlisted went on the march for Harper’s Ferry and we stopped behind.
August 5 Friday: This morning at 9 AM we had inspection and at 12 o’c we took the cars at Monocacy for Baltimore. We got into Baltimore at six in the evening and went into the soldiers rest and got supper.
August 6 Saturday: This morning we left the soldiers rest and went down to the Depot. We left Baltimore at half past 10 AM. We arrived at Philadelphia at 5 PM. We got supper. We left Philadelphia at 9 PM.
August 7 Sunday: We arrived at Jersey City at 5 AM. We crossed on the ferry over to New York at 7 AM and went into barracks and got our dinner. We stopped around New York all the rest of the day.
August 8 Monday: This morning after breakfast I went out of the barracks and took a walk about the city. We left New York at 5 PM on board of the Plimouth.
August 9 Tuesday: We arrived at Boston this morning at half past 8 AM. We left Boston at 10 AM. We arrived at Portland at 4 PM and was treated very kindly by the people. We left Portland at 5 PM. Arrived at Augusta at 9 PM.
August 10 Wednesday: This morning the weather is fine and we turned in our guns at 3 PM and we marched back through the city. I went to the Farmer’s Hotel and stopped all night.
August 11 Thursday: Today we are loafing around Augusta and waiting for our pay. We signed the rolls for pay at 7 AM and I went to the Farmer’s Hotel and stopped all night.
August 12 Friday: Today the weather is fine and we loafed around the city all the forenoon. At 2 PM we got our pay and furloughs for to go home.
August 13 Saturday: This morning at 5 AM I took the cars for Portland and arrived there at 9 AM and bought me a suit of clothes. At 8 PM I went to Biddeford.
August 14 Sunday: Today I loafed around Biddeford all the forenoon and I went to meeting in the afternoon over to Saco and I had a good time all day.
August 15 Monday: Today I left Biddeford at 11 AM and arrived in Portland at 12 and at 5 PM I went on board of the steamer New Brunswick for Eastport.
August 16 Tuesday: This morning it is very cold with the wind to the east. We arrived to Eastport at 11 AM and took the ferry boat for Lubec and they fired a salute for us.
August 17 Wednesday: This morning it is cloudy and the wind to the so’west. I stopped home all day. In the evening Lyman Allen and Tom came down to see me.
August 18 Thursday: This morning the weather is fine. I stopped around home all the forenoon. In the afternoon I went out to Mrs. Kimball’s with mother.
August 19 Friday: Today the weather is fine. I stopped around home all day. In the evening I went up the road and had a game of ball.
August 20 Saturday: Today the weather is fine. I went over to Eastport and came back home in the evening at 9 PM. It is cloudy at dark and looks like rain.

December 20 Tuesday: Today the weather is clear and cold. I went a gunning and I killed one old squaw and that is all I done today.
December 21 Wednesday: Today I started and went over to Henderson’s a gunning. I fell down on the shore and liked to broke my leg and I had to come back home.
December 22 Thursday: Today it snowed very hard all day and I stopped in the house all day with a lame leg.
December 23 Friday: Today the weather is cold and I stopped in the house all day for I was lame and I could not go a gunning.
December 24 Saturday: This forenoon I went and got Joseph Marston on board of the vessel. I killed one coot. In the afternoon I went up to the Cove.
December 25 Sunday: This morning the weather is fine. I stopped at the Cove all day and got dinner to John Small’s and we had ducks.
December 26 Monday: Today the weather is fine. I went down to the Passage and I came back to the Cove in the afternoon.
December 27 Tuesday: Today the weather is fine. I stopped to the Cove all day and loafed around and done nothing.
December 28 Wednesday: Today the weather is fine and I stopped around the Cove all day and done nothing to speak of.
December 29 Thursday: Today the weather is rather rainy. I stopped to the Cove all day. I went to the fair in the evening.
December 30 Friday: Today I stopped around the Cove all day and done nothing. I spent the evening in to John Small’s with the girls.
December 31 Saturday: Today it began to snow. I went down to the Passage. I went a gunning but I did not kill any ducks.

January 1 Sunday: Today it snowed all day and I went up to the Cove. In the evening I went back to the Passage.
January 2 Monday: Today the weather is fine. I went a gunning and killed 3 whistlers and that is all I done today.
January 3 Tuesday: Today the weather is fine. I went a gunning all day and I never killed a bird.
January 4 Wednesday: Today the weather is fine. I went a gunning and I killed 3 old squaws and that is all the ducks I killed.
January 5 Thursday: Today the weather is fine. I went a gunning and I killed 1 old squaw and that is all I done today.
January 6 Friday: Today I went a gunning all day and I killed 2 sea pigeons and that is all I killed.
January 7 Saturday: Today it rained all day. I went a gunning and I killed one gull and that is all I done today.
January 8 Sunday: Today the weather is fine. I stopped to the Passage all day and that is a hard way to spend the Sunday in the house.
January 9 Monday: Today the weather is bad for it rained all day. I went a gunning and I killed one gull.
January 10 Tuesday: Today the weather is fine. I went a gunning in the forenoon and in the afternoon I went up to the Cove.
January 11 Wednesday: This forenoon I went a gunning and in the afternoon I went up to the Cove and it began to rain and I got a good duckken a going home.

The diary of James Wallace ends here. James Wallace was, as was most of his generation, very creative when it came to spelling. I have regularized the spelling of some words and added some punctuation to make the reading easier. In the back of the diary I found a news clipping from the Portland Press Herald, Sunday January 15, 1939 about a mock battle held in Lubec on July 4th, 1866. I have added a copy of the article for color of the period.
