| Negli USA Star
Trek è anche una serie di fumetti pubblicati dalla Marvel, la più grande editrice di fumetti
americana, ben nota anche in Italia grazie agli X-Men e ad altri supereroi, tra
cui l'Uomo Ragno. |
In the USA Star Trek is also a comic
series published by Marvel Comics,
the greatest comic publisher in America, well renowned in Italy too for the X-Men
and other superheroes, like Spider-Man. |
| Era inevitabile
dunque che alcuni sceneggiatori scrivessero sia per ST:TNG che degli X-Men, e venisse
chiesto loro di scrivere delle storie interpretate da ambo i gruppi di personaggi. |
So it was written in sky that some
authors would write for both ST:TNG and the X-Men, and would be asked to write stories
interpreted by both groups of characters. |

Lee, e che posseggono dei superpoteri dovuti alla presenza nel loro genoma del
cosiddetto Fattore X, dal nome del suo scopritore, lo scienziato Charles
Xavier, paralitico ma telepate. |
To briefly explain what X-Men are, I
can say that they have been invented by the wonderful Stan Lee, and enjoy
superpowers due to their keeping in their genome the X-Factor, so named
after its discoverer, the scientist Charles Xavier, paralytic but
telepath. |

dà poteri diversi a diverse persone; la cosa, detta così, è assurda dal punto di vista

Such an X-Factor bestows different
people with different powers; such a statement is genetically absurd, unless explained in

| Charles Xavier

persone affette dal Fattore X) imparano ad apprezzare il loro personale talento, a
coltivarlo (anche un atleta nato deve allenarsi se vuol vincere), ed ad usarlo nella lotta
per la giustizia e la serena convivenza tra Homo Sapiens ed Homo Superior
(altro nome dei mutanti). |
Charles Xavier cared for it by
estabilishing the Xavier Institute, where mutants (i. e.
people expressing the X-Factor) learn to appreciate their personal talent, cultivate it
(even a born athlete needs training in order to win), and employ it in the fight for
justice and the happy living together of Homo Sapiens and Homo
Superior (i. e. the mutants). |

Such a living together is endangered by
both racial prejudice and the mutants who don't share the goals of Charles Xavier (a
mutant himself) and use their powers to commit crimes or attempt to dominate the world. |

descrivere le caratteristiche dei singoli X-Men (basta comprare i fumetti della Marvel per
conoscerle); mi limito a far notare le principali affinità tra gli X-Men e la ciurma
dell'Enterprise-D. |
I'm not describing the features of
every X-Man (buying a Marvel Comic is enough to learn them); I'm only remarking the
greatest similarities between the X-Men and the Enterprise-D crew. |
| La prima
affinità è data dallo spirito di squadra caratteristico di entrambi i gruppi: nessuno,
né degli X-Men, né dell'Enterprise-D, agisce a titolo personale, in quanto per ambo i
gruppi la collaborazione è il segreto del successo. |
The first similarity is team spirit,
which is featured by both groups: no X-Man nor Enterprise-D crewman acts alone, since for
both groups teamwork is the key to success. |

If any of them acts alone, it is either
out of tactics, or out of mere need. |

The second one is the refusal of any
kind of discrimination: the X-Men are delighted whenever they surface on 24th Century and
realize that nobody wants to start a pogrom against them. |

| Anche la Marvel
usa nelle storie degli X-Men la tecnica del montaggio
alternato (anche se con risultati meno felici che in Star Trek), e due volte l'anno
esce un crossover tra le diverse riviste Marvel, analoghi a quelli tra le serie
di Star Trek. |
Marvel too uses the cross-cut technique in X-Men stories, although
not as masterfully as Star Trek authors, and twice a year a crossover between the several
Marvel comics is issued, analogous to the ones between the Star Trek series. |
| Inoltre, la
Marvel è sempre stata attentissima alla congruenza delle sue storie, ed il suo gergo
pseudotecnico è molto simile a quello di Star Trek. |
Moreover, the Marvel has always been
extremely preoccupied with story continuity, and its technobabble is much alike Star
Trek's. |
| Il modo in cui
si mantiene la congruenza però è anche la principale differenza tra l'Universo Marvel e
quello di Star Trek: mentre la serie animata, il film ST:V:L'Ultima Frontiera,
i fumetti ed i romanzi non sono canonici, nell'Universo Marvel tout se tien,
ovvero non c'è nulla che non abbia influenza sul futuro dei personaggi, almeno in teoria. |
The way consistency is kept is also the
main difference between the Star Trek and Marvel Universes: while the Animated
Series, the movie ST:V:The Final Frontier, the novels and the
comics are not canonical, in the Marvel Universe tout se tien,
i. e. there is nothing that cannot influence the characters' future, at least in theory. |
| In pratica, chi
legge le riviste Marvel con attenzione scopre che gli sceneggiatori hanno imparato a
modulare il valore di verità di ciò che raccontano: capita, per esempio, che il passato
di un personaggio venga presentato attraverso i pettegolezzi di un suo nemico, ed il
personaggio reagisca sostenendo che quattro quinti di ciò che il nemico ha detto è
falso. |
As a matter of fact, those who
carefully read Marvel comics notice that the authors have learnt to modulate the truth
value of their statements; for example, once a character's past was reported through the
gossip of a foe of her, which prompted the character to rebut that four fifths of the
foe's allegations were false. |

pettegolezzi riferiti dal nemico di turno, senza esserne impegnati. |
I think that the comic authors will
feel free to endorse or refute one or another of the adversary's allegations, without
feeling bound by them. |
| La differenza
nel modo di gestire la congruenza significa anche che questo romanzo è molto più
importante per gli X-Men che per ST:TNG. |
The differences in continuity
management imply that this novel is much more important for the X-Men than for ST:TNG. |
| Mentre Friedman
poteva scegliere un qualsiasi momento della storia della serie televisiva per ambientare
il romanzo, egli non poteva fare a meno di mostrare i mutanti come erano nel tardo 1997 in
America (ed agli inizi del 1998 in Italia), in modo da non infrangere la congruenza della
serie fumettistica. |
While Friedman could choose any moment
in the TV series to set his novel in, he could not help showing the mutants as they were
in the late 1997 in American comics (and in the early 1998 in their Italian versions) in
order to preserve the continuity of the comic series. |
| Le somiglianze
tra i due universi consentono di pubblicare un romanzo come quello suaccennato (Planet-X
di Michael Jan Friedman) con questo soggetto: |
The similarities between these
universes allow the publication of a novel like the one I am talking about (Planet-X,
by Michael Jan Friedman) with such a plot: |

because of a faulty timehook, find themselves on a Starfleet base and
seek to talk with Jean-Luc Picard, whom they have already met, to clear
their position. |

X-Men, l'Enterprise-D fa rotta verso Xhaldia, dove deve affrontare due problemi. |
After taking the X-Men aboard, the Enterprise-D
steers to Xhaldia, where it has to face two problems. |
| Il primo è che questi nuovi superuomini hanno suscitato
reazioni razziste nella popolazione, perciò sono stati imprigionati; per giunta la
prigione ha catalizzato le tendenze caratteriali di costoro, facendo di alcuni dei buoni
esasperati dall'evidente ingiustizia, e di altri dei supercriminali che usano i loro
poteri anche contro i loro simili. |

| The first problem is that these new superhumans have stirred racist reactions in the
population, and have therefore been imprisoned; moreover, the prison has catalysed their
character traits, making some of them good natured guys enraged at the gross injustice,
and others supercriminals using their powers against their kindred too. |

| The second problem is that the mutation into superheroes was not accidental: the Dra'akon,
a warrying party from another planet, wanted superwarriors, so they had seeded Xhaldia
with a mutagenous virus twenty-one years earlier; as the mutations have now fully
expressed themselves, the party attacks the planet to abduct the superhumans and enroll
them as soldiers. |

dell'Enterprise-D, aiutato dagli X-Men, combatte perciò su due fronti, sconfiggendo gli
aggressori e convincendo il governo del pianeta a non denegare più i diritti civili dei

joined by the X-Men, fights on two fronts, defeating aggressors and convincing the planet
government to deny mutant citizens their basic rights no more, and to apologize for doing
that. |
| Non è detto che
ciò porti la pace tra umanoidi semplici e trasformati, ma è sicuramente un buon inizio. |
It does not imply that plain humanoids
and mutant will live together in peace, but it is certainly a good start. |

Who caused the timehook damage? Q,
as he wanted to stealthily help Xhaldia; not even Picard suspects him, and the only one
who knows of Q's intervention is the Guardian of Forever (ST:TOS:28
- The City on the Edge of Forever). |
| Le notevoli
somiglianze tra l'Universo Trek e quello Marvel consentono agli abitanti di entrambi di
interpretare la medesima storia, seppure a prezzo di alcuni problemi da risolvere. |
The great similarities between the Trek
and the Marvel Universes allow both universes' inhabitants to interpret the same story,
provided that some problems are dealt with beforehand. |
| Il più
importante è questo: se due personaggi di ambo gli universi sono tanto simili da giocare
il medesimo ruolo, occorre evitare che si rubino la scena a vicenda (come è capitato a Scotty
e LaForge nell'episodio ST:TNG:230 - Il naufrago del tempo). |
The most serious problem is that, if
two characters of both universes are so similar that they play the same role, care should
be take to prevent their stealing each other's show (as it happened to Scotty
and LaForge in the ST:TNG:230 - Relics episode). |
| Uno dei modi è
quello di farli cooperare insieme amichevolmente, e questo è quello che accade a
Wolverine (il più bellicoso degli X-Men) e Worf. |
A solution is having them cooperate
friendly, and this is what Wolverine (the most warlike X-Man) and Worf engage in. |
| Non solo essi
combattono insieme per tutto il romanzo in situazioni ultra-pericolose, compreso
l'abbordaggio dell’astronave nemica, ma si ritemprano insieme nel Ponte Ologrammi
due volte: |
Not only they fight together for the
whole novel in ultra-dangerous situations, boarding on the enemy starship included, but
they recreate themselves together in the Holodeck twice: |

cioé affrontando i nemici naturali dei Klingon; |

the natural enemies of the Klingons; |

| Non che manchino
le incomprensioni tra i due: Worf si chiede perché mai Wolverine combatta mascherato (se
un eroe non viene riconosciuto, pensa il Klingon, come può il suo eroismo onorare lui e
la sua schiatta?), e Wolverine riesce a rendersi ridicolo al Bar di Prora,
anche a causa di Worf. |
Some misunderstandings between them
occur anyway: Worf wonders why Wolverine is always masked when fighting (the
Klingon wonders how could the deeds of an unrecognizable hero honour him and his house),
and once Wolverine makes a fool of himself at the Ten Forward because of
Worf. |
| Infatti
Wolverine disprezza il synthetol proprio come Scotty, e chiede allora a Guinan la
bevanda dei grandi guerrieri; malignamente allora Guinan gli offre la preferita da
Worf: succo di prugne analcolico! |
As a matter of fact, Wolverine despises
synthetol the way Scotty does, and therefore asks Guinan the
great warriors' drink; Guinan then viciously offers him Worf's favourite drink: soft
plum juice! |
| Wolverine viene
trattato da Friedman come il buffone designato: se nelle storie degli X-Men predomina il
dramma, Star Trek alterna tragedia e farsa, e qualcuno deve per forza suscitare l'ilarità
per allentare la tensione. |
Wolverine is treated by Friedman as the
court jester: while the X-Men stories are mostly dramatic, Star Trek alternates tragedy
and farce, and somebody has to stir laughter in order to break tension. |
| Wolverine
comincia a fare il buffone la prima volta che chiede qualcosa ad un replicatore: questo
non capisce il suo accento da bassifondi del Canadà, e perciò non gli serve nulla;
allora Wolverine si incazza tanto da sfasciare il replicatore e la paratia, e finire in
cella di rigore! |
Wolverine begins jesting the first time
he asks something of a replicator: the machine does not understand his Canadian slums
accent, so it gives him nothing; therefore Wolverine gets so angry as to tear the
replicator into pieces, crack the bulwark behind it, and be brought to the brig! |
| Un altro modo di
trattare con personaggi troppo simili, invece, è quello di tenerli a rispettosa distanza,
come accade con Jean-Luc Picard e Charles Xavier. |
Another way of dealing with too similar
characters is having them keep each other at an arm's length, as it happened between Jean-Luc
Picard and Charles Xavier. |
| Xavier è
rimasto sulla Terra del 20mo secolo, e Picard può solo parlare, brevemente, con una sua
versione olografica; ciononostante le somiglianze appaiono enormi, dacché entrambi sono: |
Xavier remained in 20th Century Earth,
and Picard can only briefly talk to an holographic image of him; but the similarities are
nonetheless striking, as they are: |
| fisicamente molto simili (tra l'altro, sono calvi entrambi); |

| physically alike (for instance, they are both bald); |

| scarsamente mobili (Xavier è paralitico, Picard non può in
circostanze normali abbandonare l'Enterprise-D); |

| endowed with impressive leadership (they have saved their subordinates' lives
countless times). |

definitiva della loro somiglianza è stata data dai produttori di X-Men: il Film,
che nel Settembre 1998 hanno contattato Patrick Stewart per fargli interpretare
il Prof. Charles Xavier. |
The conclusive evidence about their
similarities was given by the producers of X-Men: the Movie, who
contacted Patrick Stewart in September 1998 as they wanted to hire him as
Prof. Charles Xavier. |
| Il trattamento
che Friedman riserva a Wolverine è simile a quello riservato all’X-Man Arcangelo,
che nel romanzo si comporta come un bambino insicuro e viziato (o meglio, come la brutta
copia di Wesley Crusher) nel romanzo, mentre nei fumetti è ben più
responsabile. |
The way Friedman treats Wolverine is
similar to the way he treats the X-Man Archangel, who behaves like an
unsecure and spoiled child (or, better, as another Wesley Crusher) in the
novel, but is far more reliable and responsible in the comics. |
| Queste
alterazioni nella caratterizzazione degli X-Men mostrano i limiti della storia, e forse
anche una svista di Friedman: se la storia era più importante per gli X-Men che per
ST:TNG, sia per i requisiti di congruenza dei fumetti, sia perché era con ogni evidenza
un tentativo di iniziare dei Trekkie all'Universo Marvel, gli X-Men
avrebbero dovuto essere trattati con maggior riguardo. |
These changes in the X-Men character
show the story limits, and perhaps a Friedman's mistake: as the story was far more
important for the X-Men than for St:TNG because of the comics' consistency requirements,
and because it must have been an attempt to initiate Trekkies to the
Marvel Universe, the X-men should have been treated with more care. |
| Concludo il
saggio facendo notare che, come in molti romanzi di ST:TNG, anche in questo si accenna
alla possibilità che Picard abbia una relazione sentimentale con una donna di valore
(questa volta si tratta della X-Woman Tempesta), se, come sempre, le circostanze
non si opponessero. |
I end my essay by remarking that, as in
many ST:TNG novels, a sentimental relationship between Picard and a worthy woman (in our
case, the X-Woman Storm) could start, if circumstances did not prevent
it, as always. |

non può certo tenere Tempesta prigioniera del 24mo secolo per averla con sé, ed i
problemi che ella creerebbe non sarebbero minori di quando Amanda, stagista sull'Enterprise-D,
si scoprì una Q (ST:TNG:232 - Una vera Q). |
Actually, Picard cannot get out with
Storm without making her feel imprisoned in 24th Century, and she would stir no less
problems than the ones created by Amanda, the Enterprise-D intern who
discovered to be a Q (ST:TNG:232 - True Q). |
