Here's another great Spirit fanfic written by Lightning. She got plenty good reviews in Run With the Wind, a Spirit message board.

Chapter #1

The story starts with Spirit running with the eagle. As usuall, he beat him. Then he, and the herd went to anothr grazing ground. He stayed at the bluff unill dark, which he went down to the sleepy herd. Then, after cheaking the herd he went to his wife, Rain, who soon is going to have a foal. They both nuzzed, and spirit went to look at the sky. It was clear and with thousands of shimmering stars. But in the distance, he saw huge, black coulds rolling twords the herd. Spirit nieghed to the herd that there will be harsh rain. He locked his eyes at the clouds and a few seconds later, Eperanza, Spirit's mom, went up to him and told how proud she was that he was going to finally have a foal of his own. She walked away, and Spirit went for the night to Rain.
Spirit woke up to the feeling of rain drops. Soon, it was pouring and the herd just stood there soked, but it was the first rain of the season (early fall) so they enjoyed the nice wash of rain. But then, the rain tuned heavy. And then, lightning struck and frightened the herd. All panicked, and ran randomly. And worst of all, Rain trotted away, in early labor. This really wasn't a good time to have a foal. Then Spirit noticed that rain was gone. The sky was black, the lightning grew bigger and bigger. And in the distance, he saw Rain. And he galloped to her like mad! Rain was now walking slowly and weakly and Spirit begged her to go to a safe place to have the foal. They both slowly walked to a cliff, the nearest shelter. As soon as they got there, Rain just collapsed and fell into the grass. Spirit went behind her and layed by her.
Few seconds later, Rain just pushed the foal out without a warning. Spirit didn't notice untill Rain gave a painfull nicker after the first push. He looked at the half-born foal and then Rain ave a final push and the foal was out. Rain didn't bother to look at the foal right away, she just layed there panting. As soon as the new born foal opened it's eyes the thunder storm was gatting softer, until it was gone. Spirit sniffed the foal and licked it's little mane. Then Rain got a look at the foal. She was kind of glad that it looked a bit like Spirit but they didn't know what the foal was, a colt, or a filly. They named it Thunder wether or not if it was a colt or a filly. Rain gave a soft nicker and then the foal took a deep breath and made a tiny skweak, trying to imitate Rain's nicker. Spirit and Rain got up grazing, and the foal tried to get up. It's long legs were spread out and wabbled, and Thunder collapsed on to the ground and ha d a ditermined look on his face and he finally got up.
Spirit got a close look on Thunder and realised that it was a colt and told Rain. Thunder walked wabbly with his little legs to Rain. Spirit gided him to where he was going to nurse. As Thunder started to nurse, Rain was startled and looked at her new foal. (one thing she was happy about is that the is lighter XD) It was morning and Thunder Spirit and Rain trotted back to the herd, who was reunited again. The first thing Spirit did is went to Esperanza grazing, he startled her. And he gave a smug look on his face and led her to his little colt. She looked him and nuzzled him. She congadulated Rain for the foal.
Then a few months old Thunder was selebrating his first day of snow time. The herd was drinking from icicles but Thunder couldn't reach. And he looked at the lake the ice is a bit frozen. but Thunder went to his favorite drinking spot and got his toung stuck. He pulled and pulled and a huge chunk of ice was still on his toung.Good enough and trotted to the herd, ignoring the chunk of ice. It's now Spring time and Thunder climed a cliff, up to trouble again, and just wanted to show off. Spirit was a bit worried, but he saw a small figure eclipsing the sun and landed rolling to Spirit's feet.
It's now late summer and Thunder is almost a year old. He was playing with Rain when he hid behind a log. But Rain found him! Then he wanted to hide somewhere far. So he galloped in a forest Where on the way he saw brown horses. He investicated them and one was pionting twards where he came from, ''Go, go, I don't want you to be captured'' nickered one softly. And all of a sudden, a lasoo roped over Thunder's little neak. He was squarmming like mad. And then, Spirit came snarling at the solger. And then got a gun and amed right at him, and Spirit grabbed the gun with his teeth. Then the man got a huge sack (it could fit foals) and put Thunder in there. Spirit kicked the man and snared again. He threw the sack, with Thunder in it, into a cage. Then the man put the cage on the cart witch was pulled by horses. Spirit was in rage, he acted wild and crazy and kicked the man several times. And then they drove off with Thunder in the cage. Spirit ran after them. Approshing a train Spirit ran faster and FASTER! His heart pounded, as the train seemed to get closer.
The horses went into a stall inside the train and then the man grabbed a whip and hit Spirit while other men were loading up the train, including with Thunder's cage. Spirit saw them take the cage inside and the train started to run and so did Spirit. he knew the stall the thunder was in. He could see Thunder's little muzzle poking out of a window and he gave one helpless little whinny. Spirit chased the train untill it was no use. He had to give up his only foal. (I'm kinda crying right now) He watches sadly as the train went away into te distance and he trotted away sadly. And told Rain, that Thunder is gone...

Chapter #2

Meanwhile, Thunder is the train and upset, and wishes that rain was with him (if this was a movie there would be a sad song that i made up). He was put in a stall all alone and he looked out side into the field. Then, a couple hours later, he went out of the train and into a stall witch he saw there was another lonely colt. His name was Solemn a hore from the nearest indian tribe. They both were scared and cold at the night.
The first day, was the day when the colonel was going to train the foals so they will be well disiplined when they're adults he first looked at Thunder who was trembling at his feet looking up at him with a sorrow look. "You first,'' said the colonel with a low voice. All they did was put a tiny saddle and reins for a whole week without gettimg it off, so he'd get used to it. And things got harder and harder, and harder to do...
**********
6 years have past and now, Thunder is a pro army horse. He doesn't have meny memories about Spirit and Rain. All he remembers is that he's been here his whole life.
Week later he watched as the mare next to his stall was foaling a colt. He saw every move that the little foal did. He looked out of the stall and thought (he didn't remember rain though) that he wished that he had a mom too. he went into a deep depresstion all week and never did anything. And then Solemn nickered, "Oh, don't you wich that you had a mom here," Thunder didn't bother to answer, he was still in his depresstion. And the next day, Thunder nickered to himself, "I wish I had a mom..." Then Solemn said, "Well, you do," and the stallion next to them, said, "I TOLD YOU NOT TO TELL HIM! *sigh* O well, I guess you wanna know about her, well she was a mare in an indian tribe, and your dad was a hero, he went here once, I think..."
That night Thunder was out of his deep depresstion. He thought that he didn't need parents, and soon fell asleep into his dream he'll never forget. He was staning in a space that from left to right, was just white, and a big bright light. His mane was grown all the way like a wild horse. Soon, a figure emerged out of the light. He squinted his eyes and he knew it was a horse. A few seconds later, it was a perfect image of Rain. Then his memory came back, but he didn't nuzzle her, he just looked down, sadly. But Rain nuzzled him comfortingly, and then she told him that she's always with him, and walked away, back into the light. He woke up startled, and realized that he was tooken away from his family so he wasn't depressed, he was in rage.
The colonel wanted to ride him to capture more foals, but Thunder reared and whinnied angerly. Then he wanted to put him in the corral to clam hin down. He was in rage, so he was bucking like crazy, everyone fell off and then the colonel rode him. He was bucking angerly even fell on his back. Then, Thunder grabbed the reins with his teeth, and pulled it away from him. The colonel yelled, "What is wrong with you horse?!" Then, by rubbing his head agenst the fence he got th reins off. He reared back and landed of the colonel, who was now badly hurt. The first thing Thunder did was run, to the opening with his saddle still on! He was running the same steps Spirit did when he espcaped. Mufy was at the door, but Thunder just pushed him on his way and he was free. He looked back and saw a dozen horses behind him.
He was now, free after all these years...

Chapter#3

Thunder started running, but he got tired easily, because he wasn't really used to running a lot. As he took a break, he watched as the other horses went in different directions. One of them was Solemn who escaped out of his stall and followed Thunder, protecting him from the lasoos and guns. Thunder started heading twards the desert, when he just then realized that he didn't know where to go. So he continued, west, to the harsh deaserts. After a day of traviling, Thunder got hungry, thirsty, tired, hot, and weak. He was fighting to keep moving. Step, by step, he grew more weaker, mile after mile, he grew more thirsty, and hungry untill he just collapsed ( Kinda like in the lion king o_O) He lay there in the sand, almost lifeless.
******
The next morning he woke up in a small corall and in it was a dozen apples and a clay pot of water. He firat locked on the water and drank every bit of it. Thunder also ate all of the apples, with he have seen before, and loved it. After he was full, He looked around some more. There were grass, witch he hasn't felt scince he was a child, tipies, a small river, and when he looked behind he saw a liver chestnut mare playing with a 11-year-old indian girl (thats old for indians). He wasn't crazy for the mare or the girl. He felt that he was trapped again, but in a different world, so it really wasn't that bad.
He saw his saddle in the fence with a blanket and a leather rope. Soon, the girl he saw earlier went up to him. Thunder, however, backed away. He ended up hitting the fence, and th girl let out her her hand and petted his muzzle. "Hi beautiful stallion, my name is River and you're in the Lakota tribe," said the girl softly. At the corner of Thunder's eye, was a man, looked kind of young, but still a man. "Hey, you look quite familiar, like an old friend I used to know, maybe, if I say my name you will reconize me, if you ever even knew me, my name is, Little Creek." said the man. Thunder's eyes widened, and whinnied happily. "Spirit used to do that all the time. Rain was always happy like that too, *gasps* are you their son?!" said Little Creek. Thunder did somthing to imitate as a ''nod'' and seem to smile. "Wow, Rain's son..." wispered Little Creek.
Littlle creek didn't play with Thunder much, but River did, Thunder didn't really like that though. Infact he was a bit mean to her. One day she though Thunder would let her ride him, so she got on and Thunder reared back and she fell off of him, and then, Thunder was firce. he whinnied at her harshly and threatened to stomp her. But before he did, the mare bit his tail, and pulled him away from her. River smiled and tied a rope on Thunder's fetlock, attaching to the mare's. "Ok, Chakawea (it's pernounced like it says), I really want to show the stallion the out side world, but I can't rick him running away..." said River. Thunder was lazy and layed down. Chakawea just pulled him out of the corral, dragging Thunder. (XD)
She just wouldn't give up. Then her rolled his eyes and decided to come along. Practacly following Spirit's foot steps, they went every where. Thunder still wasn't that crazy for her but he was excited every day when they'd explore. Soon his mane grew about six inches and whenever he shook it it felt good to him. Now, about a month has past and his mane is almost full grown, he'd always go to the river and look at his reflection with his grown mane. He now has a ''little'' crush on Chakawea. Sometimes they'd nuzzle. But that night after a moon walk (XD) he had a day dream about the light and Rain. That dream hunted him. And so, he fell asleep with the same dream.

Chapter #4

Thunder's dream was different, though. After Rain went into the light, there was a frightening flah of memory of what happened in his child hood; When he left in the train. And this is what he thought, It was them, the army, they took everything away from me, my home, herd, my freedom, and especially, my mom...Soon I hope they will feel my loss, and dispare.... Then she shut his eyes and tried to think all the way when a ''petting'' feeling was on his back, it was Chakawea. '' Are you all right?'' she nickered softly. But Thunder looked down and nickered back, "No, not really, I have to go home. But I wish I knew where it was." and then Chakawea wondered why he didn't know and so he told her everything he knew.
Chakawea felt very sorry for him. No wonder he was gloomy lately. Later, they went to the river but Thunder was still gloomy. He looked at his reflection and saw Rain's too, replacing him. He shut his eyes and shook his head. Then, they went on to continue their dayly travile, but while they were walking, Thunder thought why he had this dram of Rain, is it a sign? Is it trying to tell him somthing? Or is it just a normal dream? He was mix up in his feelings, happy, sad, lonely, angry, and worried. The dream was telling him something, that his life is half missing, and he needs to realize it. He has, but he thinks that it's possible that the dream is a hoax, he thinks it's possible that he is just wasting his time, and he was born in the army and his mom died. But how did he have his wild heritage when he escaped the army? He was all mixed up in everything. Unlike Spirit, he had no clue that he had a family far, far away.
That night, River acidently left the gate open, and for some reason, he didn't leave. He quietly went to the river to drink. The moon was full and big. he looked in the low-current water and saw his reflection. He layed down and put his hooves in the water. He looked closely at the water. Thunder looked at his reflection, and looked in the sky. H esaw a cloud formation od a train that seemed to have a tittle foal in it and an adult running next to it. Bu then, he saw the cloud turn into the horse that ran net to the train nuzzling a mare, and both looked deperssed. He observed the sky, and the cloud disappered. Thunder looked back into the water and saw rain again but didn't look away, he nickered to the reflection. The reflection seemed to nicker back at him and leaves were blowing around him. (starting to seem kinda haunting, huh?) He put his hoof on the reflection and it disappered, like the coulds. Then, Thunder got up, and went to the little corral, and even colsed the door. He slept the night and thought of a route back home.
*******
The next morning, it was sunny and warm. River went up to Thunder and petted him. To play with her, he bit on her pony tail and pulled it on her shoulder. She giggled and got on Thunder to ride him, he trotted around the corral like a merry go round. Soon, she got off him and petted him some more. But what shaddered their friendship, was a harsh BOOM from a bomb. In the distance, thunder saw a forest fire spredding across the small forest heading twards them. Thunder was panicking and River realeased him to the out side world. He was running just as fast as the forest fire itself! After a few minutes, he looked back at the flaming tribe and saw Chakawea on the flameing ground. She must have tried to escape but somehow slipped and fell one the ground. Thunder decided to save her. He galloped to the flaming ground and tugged her across the river, where it was safe and ran off, hoping she would be ok.
He ran all day and the grass seemed to be greener and greener. Mountains came in veiw and he felt like he was heading the right direction. As he ran his heart was rapedly beating, he couldn't wait to see this mare from his dreams. He was ruinning for a day and wanted to rest. He rested by a lake and looked into his reflection. All he saw, was him. He loved this beautiful land that he already called home. He fed on the grass and it tased better than he thought. This was paractacly the first time he ever grazed. That night he was sleeping he had a wonderful dream about him and Rain, together. In the morning, he went on his jorney some more. And he went to a forest that looked extereamly familiar. Like a fate happened with him there. So he walked carefuly and slowly, and almost noiseless.
But one thing made his dream shatter like a broken mirreor that led to his home...

Chapter 5

Thunder was heading close to the edge of the forest, and a bit more waling he was a bit out of the forest. He saw a large herd grazing. He wasn't sure if this was the right herd he belonged to, so he looked down walked a bit back in the forest, while his ears were back. But suddenly, a bunch of solders jumped from the brush and surrounded Thunder. One immeadietly lassoed Thunder with a chain. Then everyone else lassoed him with rope. Thunder gave up, and decided to obay them. The walked the way Thunder came in, at the corner of his eye he saw a white horse in the herd. He perked his ears up and looked back. He was amazed, the mare from his dreams was right over there, in the distance. Thunder acted wildly and whinnied harshly. No one heard him so he reared and ran with the solders. Then the solders decided to give up because it was too much to handle. They let him go, removing all the chains but by the time he was free, the herd was gone.
Eather it was his imagination, or the herd was really there, but moved on. In the very far distance he could see Rain, on a little hill, like she was making sure that everyone was gone. And she turned back and trotted to the other side. As soon as he stared to walk, a lasoo caught him, on his leg. He tripped and just layed there, shocked and sad. They finally got him to his feet, and led him to a train. Thunder could see small flakes of snow as he walked into the train. By now, he realised that the dream wasn't just a dream, it was telling hin something, that his life wasn't ment for the army, it was for being free, and happy. He was alone with only two other horses. He was sad, felt alone, didn't want to eat, and layed down. What was strande is that, as he sniffed the low window, it smelled like himself, he never went in trains, so this must be the same stall, in the same place, at the same train, that he was in when he was a colt! He looked out and the snow formed all of his dreams of Rain. But he looked away and flopped his head on the hay. One horse walked up to him and nuzzled Thunder, to make him feel better.
It was a long trip, about a week. But they weren't at the calavary fort, they were at a place that seemed that half of a fort, and it was at the very top of a hil. At the bottom there was a HUGE cart of wooden poles. Thunder, and other binches of horses, were all set up to pull the huge cart. We're sopposed to pull that?!. Then the whistle was blone, and all the horses had to pull. It was a slow job, and the mare next to him fainted, it was just to heavy for her. After about ten minutes, some other horses fell apart and did the job poorly, even the other one next to him. The solder were whipping the poor horses. But after a solder whipped the other one next to him (whitch was the one that nuzzled him in the train) he bit the whip and threw it on the ground, in half. He nicked angerly and moved on.
They were almost at the top, and thunder thought about his childhood, the fort was new, but next to an old one. He thought about if this was complete, foals from the wild will be miserable, and away from their mothers. He realised that he had to stop the fort from being built, to save foals. He backed up, and all of a sudden, a bullet went right above his head, but acted liked it hit him. He collapsed onto the dirt. And everything stopped. The bullet was from a hunter, who flead after Thunder fell down. Then, Thunder was dragged to the bottom of the hill. For a few seconds he lay there, dragged into the dirt. He woke up and found that the cart was moving. And The chain that was clutching him at his fetlock, slipped off. Thunder got up, to the front of the cart. He whinnied to the other horses to stop. They seemed to cheer for him, but the solders heard the cheering.
They went after Thunder, who ment to kick the person behind him, but kicked the latch that connected to the other horeses. And they ran off. He was amazed, and deided to kick the other one off. Everyone was free, but him. He was lassoed on his neak. Thunder ended up escaping. But without horse to pull the cart...then the wood in the cart tumbled out as thr cart tipped over. Thunder ran to the side avoiding the wood (now why didn't Spirit do that?). He saw the wood tumble down. He ran away to a trail the led to the train tracks. He was walking along the tracks and looked back. He saw a forest fire. And ran to the other forest across the tracks. The fire was faster then him. Thunder, while he ran, got his chain lasso caught on a branch on a hill. He was haning, and all of a sudden, he tumbled down to the bottom of the hill. He lay there brused, and someone gabbed his chain and both dove into the lake to avode the flames of the fire.
*********
He woke up on grass, next to a river. He stood up and was going to take a drink, but he saw an indian washing up.Thunder realised that it was River. He nudged her back. River stood up and petted through his forlock, "I was wodering where you were, now I found you." River whispered to Thunder. But what disterbed their friendship moment, was a gun shot. River hopped on Thunder and he ran. He ran to a canyon, and imidietly was lost. They didn't know what they we're running from but they were running like a ghost is chasing them. Then they heard other horses running. River jumped off of Thunder and climbed the wall on the canyon. He wondered why she did it, and continued running. Then, a dead end. Thunder climed on a ledge and climed to the top. He was climimg continueously until he was at the very top. River was on the ledge too, and went on Thunder. He was thinking hard. He didn't know what to do, until he backed up. He shut his eyes and ran. River was wondering what he was doing untill, he jumped.

Chapter #6

Thunder jumped, and landed witha flaw, sideways on his side. Noone was hurt, they saw what they were running from, solders. They were after River, who earlier, was causing trouble at the fort. But they couldn't get across, it was too far. Thunder got up and looked at River who was disting herself off. She hugged Thunder and said,"I have to go, and so do you." She hugged Thunder harder. "Goodbye, Thunder, may you return home." And Thunder almost didn't want to go, but he trotted off. He stopped, looked back at a waving girl. And then, he galloped off. He ran almost nonstop, through the nights, and the days. He only stopped to rest, to eat, and drink. What he really liked about running was the cool breese through his mane.
He ran for a week and he already arrived at the forest where he saw Rain on the hill. He walked on to the grass and golloped onto the hill. There weren't any horses, so he looked some more. After about ten minuted, he found a herd, with Rain. He took a deep breath, and whinnied cheerfully. Rain was the first to notice, and everyone looked at the stange visitor. Rain squinted her eyes, and realised it was her long lost son. She smiled and whinnied, then ran up to him followed by Spirit, but then a young mare followed Spirit. She looked like Spirit, exept he muzzle and stockings were black, and her body was chestnut. Her name was Cloud. Meanwhile, Rain was nuzzling Thunder. Thunder couldn't beleve that the mare from his dream was real. Not only that, she was there, nuzzling him. Cloud looked at Thunder, and nuzzled him, knowing that he was important. Now every hourse was looking at him. He nuzzled Cloud and neighed. CLoud neighed, then Rain, Spirit, and everyone. Thunder, Cloud, Rain, Spirit, and the rest of the herd galloped to another grazing ground. Spirit, Rain, Thunder, and Cloud were together on the bluff. Thunder neighed at the eagle, who was soring abouve his head. Thunder was finally, home...
