I find time to work with other dedicated member of this organization, Society for Environment Education in Kerala (SEEK)- a NGO dedicated to Nature education and Conservation. SEEK and its activities: The Society for Environmental Education in Kerala-(SEEK) is a movement fully dedicated to nature education and conservation. It had its origin as Zoological Club in the year 1972. The Zoological Club was later converted in to SEEK in 1979 and registered as a voluntary organization with the Registrar of Societies under Societies Registration Act. SEEK was formed with a view to give grass root level environmental education. Most of its programs are aimed at educating common man, particularly the youth and students, on the importance of protecting the environment and the urgency of remodeling our life styles in tune with the laws of nature. SEEK is functioning at its building at Edat along side the National High Way 17. Nature Education Camps Organizing nature education Camp-we call it "Prakruthi Sahavasam"-(live with nature) is one of the most important activities of SEEK. This is aimed at imparting basic knowledge on various aspects of nature and conservation. The camps are usually held at Kotternchery Hills in the Brahmagiri ranges of Western Ghats twice in a year; during April and December. The objectives of the camps are: To give participants an opportunity to live together and share their knowledge and experience of nature conservation and to acquaint with the joys and hardships of living with nature. To give the members an opportunity to observe, understand and appreciate ecosystems such as tropical rain forest, grasslands, mountain streams, etc. To introduce the participants to the basis concepts of ecology and conservation through study classes, discussions, field study trips, etc. To train the participants in the study of natural and man made ecosystems as part of their daily lives, to demonstrate the ways of approaching wildlife without disturbing it to teach them the correct ways of observing and studying wildlife through kills, foot prints, droppings, etc. To highlight with examples the destruction of nature by man; soil erosion and its devastating consequences; uncontrolled urbanization and its detrimental effect on the quality of life, etc. Trekking Programme This is conducted once in a year during November-December. Trekkers have to cover a distance of about 100 km from Payyanr to Thala-cauvery, the place of origin of the river Cauvery in 3 days, half of the distance through evergreen forest and grasslands. Work Shops This is meant for equipping young and enthusiastic naturalists to successfully work in the field for creating grass root level awareness on various aspects of nature conservation. Slide Talks SEEK has been organizing slide talks at various places from schools, colleges to village forums. Panel Exhibition SEEK has prepared a panel exhibition named Man and Environment. There are 100 such panels on various aspects of conservation, pollution, deforestation, flood, drought, etc. Medicinal Plants: We have about 200 medicinal plants, grown in pots. These are exhibited with its details showing the vernacular names, scientific name, etc. Publication "Soocheemukhi" is the monthly magazine of SEEK is published in the local language, Malayalam. It carries articles on conservation, ecological problems round the world. Membership: Membership is open to all those who are interested in nature and believe in conservation.
