Personal Details:
Height: 6'0"
Background:
After the war, many of the JSA members retired. But the Starman didn't. He remained an active superhero and protector of his hometown, Opal City. He did settle down somewhat though, marrying an heiress named Adele and having two sons: David and Jack.
After his mother's death, Jack become more withdrawn from his father and brother. He began to act out in class, being described by his teachers as a classic "problem child". In his teenage years, Jack became involved with the punk scene in Opal and eventually wound up (partly as a jab at his heroic father and wannabe hero brother) joining a punk gang. They committed several burglaries before being caught and the only thing that kept Jack from prison or JV was his father's reputation as a hero and promise to make sure Jack never did it again.
A few minutes later, one of the police officers guarding Jack's father asked Jack back into the room. He had gotten a call from his archenemy, The Mist, saying he would destroy everything that Jack's father loved: his children, his city, his wife's memory and then him. Terrified by the threats, he told Jack to leave town while he could. Jack was going to take his advice until he heard a radio report that a gang was destroying the new art wing at the city museum: a wing that named after Jack's mother in honor of the money she donated to the museum: her memory.
With the city safe, Jack made a promise with his father. He would continue to hold up the family tradition of being a hero if his father would agree to start developing ways to use the cosmic power for something other than superheroics. His father agreed and Jack set about rebuilding his shop.
Personality:
Powers:
Skills:
COLLECTABLES: Jack lives and breathes collectables. Be it a Mickey Mantel rookie card, old comics, hemp shirts, furntiture, LP record albums and all matter of junk. Jack can tell you the value of such things (if any) off the top of his head.
Flaws:
ELITIST: Jack has a severe intollerance for pousers and other people who try to pretend they are knowledgable about something (like collectables) but really don't know anything. This pretentiousness causes some people to precieve Jack as being kind of a jerk.

It all began in times past, back in the days of the Great War when a young engineer/astronomer named Ted Knight found a way to harness the cosmic energy of the sun and the stars. A typical patriotic young man, he sought a way to use this discovery to help his nation in the battle against the Nazis. He developed a club, a cosmic rod he called it, that could use the energy of the stars to enable him to fly, create force fields, fire energy blasts and a wide variety of other things. He made a costume and called himself the Starman. He helped found a group known as the Justice Society of America: a group of men and women with special abilities dedicated to protecting America.
Adele died of cancer some six years after Jack was born, forcing him to try and care for his sons as best he could. It wasn't easy at times, the two boys having become polar opposites. David was the spitting image of his father: a born athlete with a mind for science. Jack favored his mother, in looks and personality. Jack was quiet and thoughtful. Preferring his collecting hobby to playing football or soccer like his brother. He wanted to be an artist.
Jack turned around, but he still harbored a severe rebellious streak and a relationship with his brother that was strained, at best. He dropped out of Art College and used what little money he had saved up in a trust from his mother to set up a Collectibles Shop of his own in downtown Opal. It wasn't much but Jack was happy with it (even though his brother chided him about being a beatnik junk dealer) and he lived for several years in his shop. It was then that his father decided to officially retire from the superhero business and passed the title of Starman onto David. A week into his reign as Starman, David was shot down by an assassin’s bullet. This was later revealed to be part of a grand plot formulated by the oldest enemy of Jack and David's father: a supervillian of some renowned known as The Mist. The Mist's children, Kyle and Nash were involved in his plan as well. It was this Nash who blew up Ted Knight's home, wounding the former Starman. It was his son who killed David and tried to kill Jack. Jack survived the bullet wounds and was barely able to escape (thanks to the flight powers of a spare cosmic rod his father gave him for such an emergency) from the shop as the Kyle blew it up.
Jack went to the hospital to have his wounds treated, when he heard that his father had been injured by debris in the blast that destroyed his childhood home. Still in shock, Jack's father yelled at Jack about the injustice that his heroic son died while the "junk dealer" lived. Jack sulked off into the hallway, angry that even now his father still couldn't support him.
Determined not to let his mother's bequest be destroyed, Jack went to the museum and used his father's weapon and his own martial arts skills to fight off the thugs. He was forced to leave after The Villain’s son Kyle showed up, armed with a cosmic belt he had stolen from Jack's father. In his hurry to get away Jack lost the rod, falling into the Opal harbor. Going back to his father, Jack got the number of a warehouse where Jack's father kept some spare equipment including another rod. This rod, rather than being club like was longer... like a staff. Using this new Cosmic Rod and a costume of his own design, Jack confronted the villain’s son. Jack killed him, vowing then and there to never kill again. The Mist, his daughter Nash and his gang were all captured, with The Mist mad upon the news his son was dead.
ECLECTIC TASTE: Jack is a man of many hobbies and many tastes. There is no telling what might be "cool" to Jack. Jack disapproves of the "tacky and garish costumes" of many vigilantees... and yet he himself frequently wears bowling shirts and Hawaian shirts. He appreciates Frank Sinatra and Sid Vicious with the same passion.
INDIVIDUAL: Jack is very concerned with being his own man, in both his lives. He tries to distance himself from his father and the rest of the "costumed community" with his thrift-store costume and custom Cosmic Rod. He rebelled against the popular crowds in his youth, and still does to a degree being very much a loner and a rebel.
HONEST: Whatever else you may say about Jack, he is honest. He may be brazzenly tactless (such as telling a 300 pound woman in his story that she should REALLY not be looking at the bikini's in his clothing section). But aside from that little problem, Jack is very honest. He never backs out of a deal, breaks an oath or cheats a customer.
LEGACY: Despite his rebelling against his father most of his life, Jack secretly does wish to have his father's approval. Although Jack partially refuses to admit it, he had always wanted to grow up to become a hero like his father and he worries a bit about living up to his father's name and legacy.
PASSIONATE: Jack is a very passionate person. He pursues everything he wants in life with a a zeal bordering upon the fanatical at times. Be it a bargain, his art, his heroism or a woman (Jack was and still is somewhat of a womanizer), Jack gives the full 9 in everything he does.
All of Jack's powers are devrived from his Cosmic Rod. The rod is manufactured of a strong flexible plastic. It is roughly 5 feet long and was designed by Jack himself. In addition to the powers the rod grants him, Jack can also use the rod as a bo staff in combat. There is also a large spearhead on the top of the staff. The staff powers are activated through a telepathic interface and through a few switches located on the grips of the Rod.
Electrical Generation/Fire-The Rod can generate electrical blasts in a range up to 700 kilowatts and blasts of Heat/Fire up to 100 degrees Celsius. These blasts travel in straight lines for a maximum range of 50 yards (150 feet) Any blast that does not strike something will be reabsorbed by the stars.
Concussive Force Blast- Jack's prefred method of attack, the rod creates a small burst of concusive force visible as a bright yellow light. These force blasts range in level from being able to knock down fleeing suspects to being able to move large vehicles (5 tons). Like the electric/fire blasts these go in a straight line from the tip of the Rod for 50 yards.
Light Generation- The rod can genrate light. from a dim glow that can light a small area (like a mini-flashlight) to bright flares that can flash blind all the people in a 100 yard radius.
Force Field- The rod can generate a forcefield that can absorb a maximum of 10 tons of damage. The force-field can absorb most forms of energy (electric, plasma, etc) and can handle some small solid objects (bullets for example). The field is large enough to project Jack and one person if they are close (Within 5 feet) to Jack. It should be noted that Jack cannot use any of his other powers while the forcefield is acitivated.
Telekinetic Attraction/Repulsion- Using the rod, Jack can levitate and move objects of up to five tons (the size of a large truck). They must be within 100 yards of his body and in his line of sight for Jack to move the object and he can only move them within that 100 yd. radius around his body.
Flight- The rod allows Jack to fly at 65 MPH comfortably at sky-scraper level height.
POP CULTURE: If it were possible, Jack could get a degree in popular culture, particuarlly when it comes to old movies. Jack has an amazing command of cinema trivia and likes nothing more than discussing who the best actor to play Sam Spade was.
MARTIAL ARTS: Back in his punk days, Jack learned jujitsu from a friend. While not being a master, Jack is above average. Jack is also experienced in the use of staff weapons (like his custom cosmic rod).
ARTIST: More of a hobby than a skill, Jack did try his hand at painting for a while. He is pretty good, although he hasn't felt inspired to do any works in a long while.
DAY-TO-DAY: Jack has all the skills a young man needs to survive on his own and run a small business. He can cook, drive, do laundry, balance his budget and dress himself without aid. (Although given his love of Salvation Army/thrift clothing, maybe he SHOULDN'T dress himself).
TACTLESS: Jack isn't much for small talk. If he is in a hurry or desperate to get away from someone who is annoying or boring, he will tell them outright "Look, I don't want to hear about your Aunt Martha's bowel surgery." Honesty and fortrightness aren't all they're cracked up to be.%R%
SELF-DOUBT: Jack still isn't comfortable with taking up the title of Starman, doubting he is really capable of doing the job. This doubt may cause him to hesitate getting involved in conflicts since he is afraid of just making things worse, like being unable to protect people.
HEROIC CODE: Ever since avenging his Brother's murder, Jack follows the typical heroic code of not killing villians. Even in circumstances where death may be the only solution, Jack will not ever kill.
INEXPERIENCED: Jack is still relatively new to the hero role and is still learning the ropes. This may cause him to make mistakes that an exprienced vigilantee would avoid (such as trying to sneak out of a building from the roof, not thinking that the bad guys would be watching FROM the roofs).
NO NATURAL POWERS: Without his Rod, Jack has no metahuman abilities at all and is just as vulnerable to getting squashed, fried and killed as anybody else.
ROD LIMITS: The rod itself cannot take much damage and if broken in some way will leave Jack in pretty bad shape since he cannot repair the Rod without his father's help. This will leave him disabled until he can get the rod fixed. Additonally, the rod is dependent upon Jack's thoughts to operate. If Jack's mind can be kept from functioning in a normal manner, his rod will stop working.
