KUALA LUMPUR: PAS deputy president Abdul Hadi Awang said Ummi Hafilda Ali should be prosecuted in the Syariah Court for accusing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy and adultery without producing four witnesses as required in Islam.

"It is she who started this by slandering Anwar. She has committed a dosa qazaaf (sin of accusing one without four witnesses). "She has committed a grave sin by acting unjustly and not following the syariah because she was unable to produce four credible witnesses to back her allegations.

"So whatever comes out after that is the result of her own wrongdoings in the first place. "Ummi and those who are conspiring with her or are using her should all be tried in the Syariah Court because they have committed a big sin by accusing someone (of despicable acts) without proof," he said.

Hadi said he agreed with lawyer Karpal Singh that sodomy and adultery allegations should be tried in the Syariah Court and not the CivilCourt. He added that Islam condemned those who besmirched others' reputation. Asked if PAS would institute legal proceedings against Ummi under the Syariah law for doing this, he said that would be left to the party's lawyers.

Ummi had in a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1997 alleged that Anwar had sodomised Anwar's family driver Azizan Abu Bakar and also committed adultery with Shamsidar Taharin, wife of his (Anwar's) former private secretary Mohd Azmin Ali. This resulted in Anwar, the then Deputy Prime Minister, filing an injunction against a book last year which made similar allegations and culminated in him being sacked from the Government and Umno for sexual misconduct and being charged in court. Hadi said he had not read the article published in Harakah, but added that Ummi had the right to sue the newsletter if she wanted to do so.
