This is the first letter to my site, from an enlightened individual:
To Reverend James,
First off I would like to say that your page is very full of information.(Wether other people agree with me or not, who gives a fuck!!!) Anyways, I totally agree with the fact that marijuana should be legalized (even though I don't use it). The idea of someone who thinks he is an ALL MIGHTY GOD because HE (and his so-called followers) have the power to run this....as you've said "LAND OF THE FREE?" I say... "BULLSHIT!!!" I too want to live in a place where I make my own choice's and decisions in my life, a place that I can call my home and be proud to do so and not have to live with the fact that there are assholes that that tell me what I can and cannot do. I want to live my life knowing the paths and decisions I have made were my own. That boarders nor boundaries would affect the way I live!!!
I would also like to know what you're thought's are on specialized groups to contain forms of media from the people? Such as the government, the Internet (The big Napster and other's incident) and the idea of how violence and gratuitous sex is affecting the youth of America and the censorship of it by jackasses like the PTC (Parents Television Council)?
I thank you for your time in reading this... You Have Enlightened Me.
Sincerely,
THE GAME
Hey "Game",
Thanks for supporting the site and I'd be happy to delve further into these issues in weeks to come. Keep checking back and remember, your input is always welcome!
Rev. James
The first "comment" to the site comes from Devil's Advocate:
You can try and ignore the Devil's Advocate, but you can never tune me out. I was the first to address the Reverend, yet, I fail to see my editorial!? How is it only an "enlightened" fan has his/her letter posted first? By the way, who's "The Game?" Let's face it, the Devil's Advocate can argue with the best. And most certainly, can argue "The Game" under "The Table!" You are WARNED!
Sincerely,
Devil's Advocate
p.s. - see you soon...
Interesting footnote here:
To have seen Devil's Advocate's FIRST comment, and yes it WAS on this site, you had to click on "view results" under the weekly poll. But unfortunately, with a new "Weekly Skinny" comes a new weekly poll and all the old results/comments go out the window. Sorry!
And by the way, the Reverend is the only one who'll be doing any warning around here. Bring it on!
And another letter:
I visited your web-site, and I was trying to find a part where it said what you believe about God and Jesus..ect. I was wondering exactly what you belive about that. Thank You, Tammy
Well, Tammy, thanks for the question. How about you come back to the site and take another look around, a good loooong look?! Then you can tell me what YOU think I believe in....
A reply from Tammy:
see that's the thing I visited you site. No where did it say...this is what I believe...I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I want to know exactly what you THINK not what your "Religion" thinks..For example..what do you believe about God? Love, Tammy
Okay Tammy.....first off, I don't like organized religion. So there won't be any religion doing the thinking for me. Secondly, I don't believe anything about God, I keep the fairy tales in the storybooks where they belong. But I don't fault anyone for their beliefs and would like to hear more on what YOU believe.
Love,
The Rev. James
Reverend James, I can appreciate your zealous approach towards fireworks. I can, really! But, please don’t equate & simplify the Fourth of July to that of fireworks. Sure, fireworks are symbolic to our nation’s historical battles so long ago. However, our “forefathers” did not put their lives on the line so that we, the children of the 21st Century, can light M80’s, bottle rockets, & silver dollars. In closing, allow me to assume your flag, which represents so many things (i.e. – our nation’s unity, our independence through individual sovereignty, and a constitution which reads, “For the people, by the people”) will be flying high outside your house this “holiest of holies,” right? I thought not.
-Devil's Advocate
Touché my good man,
You are absolutely right, as there will be no such flag in front of my house this 4th of July. This does not I am any less proud of our nation. However, I choose not to fly the flag because I fear it has come to represent the nation as it is today; which is but a pale comparison to the nation our forefathers fought and died for. So I choose instead to celebrate my freedom by lighting fireworks and to stop me from doing that might not ruin what those men stood and fought for, but it does seem to cheapen it a bit don't you think?
Thanks for the letter and I made sure your name was on it.
Rev. James
Well, well--who would have guessed that Devil's Advocate would have more to say this week?! I do not believe that the Fourth of July has been "simplified to that of fireworks." However, I do believe that the rights our forefathers fought for are practically non-existent in today's society. You might as well take the Bill of Rights and tack on the phrase "within in reason, if your government deems fit." The flag you speak of is no longer the revered symbol it once was. Sure, it is still prevalent in all the major avenues but you would be hard pressed to find someone today who knows of the reasoning behind our nation's adoption of "Old Glory." (And not just when it is a trivia question on a game show!) I love shooting off fireworks on the Fourth, of course, but I don't equate that with being an American. I do, however, equate "being FREE" to light these fireworks in my backyard with being American. You know, "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," or have you only read the Constitution?
With liberty and justice for all.... Dark Angel
and out of nowhere Dark Angel with the rebuttal. Go get em' Angel!
Oh sweet Dark Angel, Though you try so very hard to "set the constitution" straight, you fail to see past the political mumbo-jumbo of "today's world!" We are free to live our lives! We are free to vote, we have freedom of religion, free to express ourselves in a public forum (insert Nepal & China here, or any other country for that matter). These are but a few examples of what our "forefathers" fought for. If you dislike the local laws - change them by voting. If you want to "be free" and light fireworks in your backyard, petition for a change. You see Angel, you are free, you just don't know it! Always an opposing force to be reckoned with, Devil's Advocate
Thanks again for another informative letter Devil's Advocate.
Angel, are you gonna put up with that?
I say we do away with the whole argument and make Rev. James supreme emperor of earth.
Dear son,
I Have been enjoying your website quite a lot. How about addressing the issue of the propaganda we are fed through the news that is all controlled by corporate America. See this months issue of Utne reader. I just wondered about your opinion on that.
Love Mom
See, even the reverend's mother has some input. Thanks for the letter mom! I also added the Utne reader to the link page, so everyone check it out and let me know what you think. Look under culture, "An antidote to the spin doctors." There's also a good article on anarchism right under it.
And thus the reckoning begins! While I appreciate and respect your "Rock the Vote" approach as a solution to all of society's problems, how far will that get you? Just ask the people who turned out to vote in our recent presidential election and were denied at the poll booths. Were their votes any less important? No! So where were their rights?! Of course we are freer in certain aspects than other countries but, as the news proves on a daily basis, someone is always getting their freedom trampled on. Just as there are always exceptions to every rule, so it seems there are exceptions to every American right. And, to quote the reverend, "that's the rub." I am not, as you say, "trying to set the Constitution straight" but I do believe that we, as a nation, have forgotten the "U" in U.S.A. stands for "United." And until we are able to repair our civil relations, we will continue to lack in our foreign relations; "you must remove the plank from your own eye before you can remove the speck from your neighbors."
Ever the thorn in your side..... Dark Angel
To quote Bugs Bunny, "I hope you know this means war." And speaking of quotes, I believe there was one from the reverend in this most recent letter. Point 1 to Dark Angel.
Supreme Reverend,
I was thinking the other night about the ways a police officer can pull you over. Naturally if you are speeding, driving out of the lines, or bringing more attention to yourself then everyone else around you, the 5-0 will spot you. However, there is one way in which an officer of the law can pull you over without you doing anything wrong. Does anyone know what that reason may be? Some cities and states may not do it, but I know that the good 'ol state of NE. does. Sometimes throughout the year our loving police force hits the road to recognize GOOD drivers. (those people who seem to be driving just right.) Now what happens if a police officer pulls you over to "recognize" you, and you just so happen to be fucked up. Can the man in blue hull your ass off to jail, or does he really need a reason to pull you over in the first place. And seeing how he was going to "recgonize" you, would that work in your favor when it comes to standing in front of the Almighty Wizard of OZ(Judge)?
-The Madmonk
In my opinion, I don't want the gang in blue pulling me over, even if it is to compliment me. Send me a letter, if you want to praise me, or better yet e-mail me and I'll post it up here. I think the judge would have to let you off because there was no probable cause. If he doesn't, then maybe we should pull that curtain aside and expose the real wizard!
Dear Son,
I have to agree with the dark angel in her last letter. I still believe that we can change more from within than without. In the seventies we tried changing by rebellion and it didn't get us far. I still believe that our only hope is in educating the masses on the real skinny . And we cannot count on our news to do so.It will take people like yourself pointing out the not so obvious.
Take care son
Love Mom
Another one from moms. Why try and push the boat over, when you can climb inside and knock everyone out? The media is a corporate owned conglomerate where the highest bidder gets their point addressed on the front page. My mom knows that....... do you?
Dark Angel - Laugh, mock, and under-sell the (as you put it) "Rock the Vote" approach all you want - that's your "right" (freedom of speech)! It's ironic really; as you put down our country for its so-called lack of freedoms, you sure as hell enjoy them on a daily basis. Question, when’s the last time you’ve been to another country? And since you long for quotations so much, here's one for ya' "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid.” - Soren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855)
-Devil's Advocate
Always one to be reckoned with here on the Reverend James web site.
Devil's Advocate, I think they are ganging up on you. If you want my opinion, we shouldn't have "freedoms" we should just have "freedom". Thanks for the quote, I added it to the quotes page.
The Rev.
Much respect to Moms! I can appreciate the wiser voice you contribute to the forum. Reverend, can I get an Amen?
-Devil's Advocate
Amen!
I was reading mom's reply to Dark Angel's letter about changing things from within rather than from without... In ways I do agree, However ( and R.J. you might want to add this to your quotes page), "If you want something you've never had before, you must do something you've never done before." Great nations have been built on Rebellions.
-Madmonk
I think it comes down to this: we must rebel against anything that infringes on our right to live as we choose but it doesn't hurt to have a few moles on the inside as well. (do you like how I take both sides on this one?)
Always the peacemaker,
The Rev.
POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY IN SIMPLE "TWO COW" TERMS!
Socialism: You have two cows. You keep one and give one to your
neighbor.
Communism: You have two cows. The government takes them both and
provides you with milk.
Fascism: You have two cows. The government takes them and sells you
the milk.
Bureaucracy: You have two cows. The government takes them both, shoots
one, milks the other, pays you for the milk, and then pours it down the
drain.
Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.
Corporate: You have two cows. You sell one, force the other to produce
the milk of four cows and then act surprised when it drops dead.
Democracy: You have two cows. The government taxes you to the point
that you must sell them both in order to support a man in a foreign
country who has only one cow which was a gift from your government.
-Madmonk
I had to post this one up here. It seems to hit the nail right on the head.
Thanks Madmonk!
Dear Son,
If you were going to take over a country How would you do it? Would you go at them with guns and missles in their face or would you create conflict within? Would you drug the masses with cheap drugs that caused them to shoot each other and dull their minds with mind numbing propaganda and allow them to have guns so they could shoot themselves in the street and save you the trouble? How did Russia fall ? Did we have to do it with missles? Do you think we had a hand in their fall? Just some thoughts I had on government and freedom.
Love Mom
If I were going to take over a country, how would I do it? Should I take the Machiavellian ( The Prince by Machiavelli) approach full on, or sit back and watch my enemy like Sun Tzu. ( Art of War by Sun Tzu) Actually, I think you got it right by having them attack each other. Divide and conquer is the easiest way to attack an opponent. I think we might have had a hand in Russia's fall; you hit a country's economy, its people turn against it. If you can't feed your people, your people won't support you. Taking it apart from the inside, out. A mental attack is much easier and more cost effective then a physical one.
Oh blessed art thou Reverend, First off, why is the weekly poll skewed to "Yes, go to sleep America?" Maybe I would like to choose NO, yet I don't believe the media is my friend - just doesn't see fair!? Anyhow, I would just like to congratulate you, Rev for a site dedicated to half-truths. Where's the personal blame? I just have a hard time believing that we are so gullible and ready to accept everything flashed on the boob-tube we have forgotten to think for ourselves. I mean really - give us post-Neanderthals some credit! Don't get me wrong - I, too, believe we live in a world full of lies, deceit, & misinformation. However, try not to lay all the blame on some illusive secret organization made up of corporate individuals behind smoke screens simply to misguide the "American" people. Have you ever heard of Oakum’s Razor? If not, it means in most cases the simplest answer is usually the correct one. In other words, what we see on television is entertainment - nothing more. Unless you can prove this “theory” you simply jumped on-board the conspiracy bandwagon. Until next time,
- Devil’s Advocate
Well Devil's Advocate, the weekly poll is for entertainment purposes only - like the television. Do you honestly think that the American public is not swayed by the things they see on the television? Have you met the American public? They are all not as intelligent as you, you know. And for a web site "only dedicated to half-truths," you seem to get your point heard here on a regular basis. I don't know if I can "prove my theory," regarding an elusive secret organization made up of corporate individuals, but I have my eye on Disney.
Thanks for keeping me thinking......
The Rev.
Dear Reverend- I wanted to send you a couple of items that I think you may like....or you may not. First, I have a couple of quotes for you from my favorite "freethinker."
"The obscurity in which the origin of all the present old governments is buried, implies the iniquity and disgrace with which they began....From such beginning of governments, what could be expected, but a continual system of war and extortion? It has established itself into a trade."
-Thomas Paine, Rights of Man
"I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church"
-Thomas Paine, Age of Reason
Second, I have a link that I frequent often and believe you may enjoy as well. http://www.infidels.org/infidels/ This is a site full of text, products, etc. promoting not only free thought but also atheism, humanism and all types of metaphysical naturalism. Thanks for taking your time to make a site where everyone can make their point and discuss it freely.
"Whatever limits us, we call Fate."
-Dark Angel
Thanks for the quotes and link Dark Angel, I have added them to the site. I also am a fan of Thomas Paine. You can check out the political pic I have in the "Cool Pics" section, it's from when he was wanted by the French. Anyone interested in learning more about him, here's a link to one of his novels
Reverend - I can appreciate your opinions & beliefs. Which is why I have decided to donate a quote that has been near & dear to me for many moons (use it on your quotes page if you like). Michael Parenti is an internationally known author and lecturer. He is one of the nation's leading progressive political analysts, which states, "The enormous gap between what US leaders do in the world and what Americans think their leaders are doing is one of the great propaganda accomplishments of the dominate political mythology." See, I knew you’d like it! :)
- Devil’s Advocate
Thanks Devil's Advocate. I did like it and I added it to the quotes page. You are always the devil on my shoulder. Or are you the angel? I get them confused.
Dear Brother:
I would like to add a little comment. The thing that really pisses me
off is the fact that people blame television for the fact that their children
are misbehaving. They think by watching wrestling or playing playstation
games, their children are learning bad things. All I have to say is it's
their own damn faults, they have no one to blame but themselves. They are
the ones who don't care about their children enough to care what they are
watching, they just want something to occupy their child's time. Then they
turn around and blame it on the t.v just so they don't have to look like the
bad guy. My last thought on this is, if nobody likes the thought of t.v
brain washing them, then turn the damn thing off and maybe pick up a
book!!!!!!
-Sissy Kates
You are exactly right Kates! No argument here. I think this topic is one most logical people will agree on. If you don't agree, take it up with Kates. She'll crack some skulls.
Reverend,
In an attempt to create "other" thinking - I'm choosing to sit this one out. Hopefully, some of your other readers can muster up the courage to give some input - excluding Mom's & the Dark Angel. By the way, whatever happened to "the game?" So as to not offend anyone let me just say - game over (just as I predicted)! I'll be checking back for "other" comments & look forward to next week’s skinny! If you don't mind, Sir Reverend, I have a topic idea - assuming you take suggestions? What about racial profiling? I would love to hear what you have to say about profiling, discrimination, &/or affirmative action in the workplace. Always in support of free speech - as long as I can get my two-cents in...
- Devil's Advocate
I hope you do create "other" thinking as I would love input from more readers. Even if you choose to sit this one out, I would like to hear more of your thoughts on other topics. I recently added a fan addition page, so if there is anything you would like to add like your thoughts, articles, or if you just want to bitch about something then I would be glad to post it. I always like to read your "two cents worth." That goes for everyone else too. Thanks for your continuing support Devil's Advocate.
The Reverend James
P.S. Great topic idea! I don't know who you are, but your thoughts make my site more interesting. Thanks for "mustering up the courage."
Isn't it ironic that this weekly skinny is all about censorship and along comes Devil's Advocate to "exclude" comments from myself and the Reverend's mom?! Now with that out of the way....Of course, I am in agreement that parents should be responsible for teaching their children right and wrong but what about, for example, a youth that has chemical imbalance or is manic depressive or something else beyond the parent's control? And what if they have tried to obtain the best possible assistance for their child, then should that parent still be considered "negligent?" I am, at any rate, an immense antagonist to those who feel the media and its subsidiaries are to blame for the violence in the world. Honestly, there must be serious flaws in a person who cannot discern the line between fantasy and reality. To take what is seen on televison at face value and to cast aside all consequences is sheer foolishness. Several other children play video games or listen to rock music or watch violent movies and they go on to lead healthy and normal lives. So, where does the blame belong? Would it be the government that propagates violence through war and indifference? Would it be the parents who are empowered with the challenge to teach morals and ethics? Would the blame lie with the children's peers who can, at times, be so cruel? Or would it lie with the child themselves? Just some questions to pose to everyone in my moment of exclusion. Here are a few interesting quotes regarding censorship also:
"Censorship, like charity, should begin at home; but unlike charity, it should end there." - Clare Booth Luce
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Voltaire
"For every prohibition you create, you also create an underground." - Jello Biafra
"You have not converted a man because you have silenced him." - John Morley
"Censorship in any form is the enemy of creativity, since it cuts off the life blood of creativity: ideas." - Allan Jenkins
"If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all." - Noam Chomsky
As always, stoking the sparks of thought to burst into flames of understanding.... Dark Angel
Thanks for the great letter Dark Angel. In answer to your question, No I don't think parents should be held negligent if their child has something medically wrong with them and they have tried all they can to help the child. I think a lot of the reasons you stated do have an influence over children. Still I believe if you love your children, which means telling them that every day, it helps their self esteem and greatly reduces the child's chances of falling victim to outside influences. Also, I enjoyed your quotes and added them to the quotes section. No one is excluded on the Rev's page. I do think Devil's Advocate meant it as a compliment though....(then again maybe not?)
The Rev
Kinda says it all.............
I Am Your Worst Nightmare. I am a BAD American.
I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some midlevel governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies.
I believe no one ever died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T or Marilyn Manson sang.
I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer.
I believe it's called the Boy Scouts for a reason.
I don't think being a minority makes you noble or victimized.
I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, you'd better do it in English.
I don't use the excuse "it's for the children" as a shield for unpopular opinions or actions.
I think fireworks should be legal on the 4th of July.
I think that being a student doesn't give you any more enlightenment than working at Blockbuster. In fact, if your parents are footing the bill to put your pansy ass through 4-7 years of college, you haven't begun to be enlightened.
I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God.
Hillary Clinton is a carpet-munching lesbian.
My heroes are John Wayne, the Simpsons, and whoever canceled Dr. Quinn,Medicine Woman.
I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor.
I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time arguing about it.
I think global warming is a big lie. Where are all those experts now, when I am freezing my ass through a long winter?
I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I didn't wander forty years in the desert after getting chased out of Egypt, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you, so shut-the-#$%!-up already.
I want to know which church it is exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches. And where does he get his money? And why is he always part of the problem and not the solution.
I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry ass if you're running from them.
I also think they have the right to pull your ass over if you are breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.
I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.
I hate those bastards standing in the intersections trying to sell me crap or trying to guilt me into making 'donations' to their cause. These people should be targets.
I think if you are in the passing lane, and not passing, your license should be revoked, and you should be forced to ride the bus until you promise to never delay the rest of us again.
I think beef jerky could quite possibly be the perfect food.
I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents.
I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement.
I think Dr. Seuss was a genius.
I'm neither angry nor disenfranchised, no matter how desperately the mainstream media would like the world to believe otherwise.
I believe if she has her lips on your willie, it is sex, and it is sex for both of you. This even applies when you are President of the United States.
If that makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.
-Cassigirl
I'm half and half on that one....maybe more than half. I never got any awards for being a good American. I blame Bush!
Thanks for the letter. Keep them coming!
Bless You my brother! I hope things are well with your parish! I
have been out converting the female non-believers. It is going well.
I have them screaming "Oh, my God!" in the most unholy ways! I think we
need to get together soon so that we can catch up and discuss our work.
The church band is in the studio and their first full length album is
almost finished. I feel this will be a strong tool in increasing our
parish. As always, all sins are forgiven for you as well my brother.
Stay unclean and I will see you in the future.
Eeeeee Ahhhhhhh Ohhhhhhh Seeeeeex Wiiiiiith
aaaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAAAAaaaaa Hooooooooo
Rev. Matthew
I always love when the ministry converts new members. This is the first letter from a fellow Rev. I might add. I would like to hear from more. Thanks for forgiving the sins too, as they were getting pretty out of hand. You can check out the Rev. Matt's church band at this link, Flurry . We all know religion is a business so buy some stuff too. Thanks for the letter my brother and I hope to see you soon.
Dear Son, A perfect example of amateur profiling "a carpet munching
lesbian" I do believe this was in reference to Hillary Clinton. Just last
week I heard a lesbian call her a stupid bitch. Now son you know how I feel about the woman. She may be a bitch but she sure isn't stupid. We didn't like Bill but we didn't call him a fag. Actually I liked Bill I just would have liked him better with his dick in his pants.I also believe Hillary will be
our first woman president. It takes big balls to get there and last time I
looked lesbians still don't have them. I also hear a lot of complaining here. Do we do anything about it? Do we have any activists on this page or just whiners? I don't know what its like to be a person of color but I do know what it is like to be a minority in a lot of ways. The thing that will get me angry every time is slamming the avtivists that are out there making your world a better place to live and Hillary Clinton is one of them. And in this day and age I do believe it takes a village because two parents are a thing of the past except in your little bubble of a world cassigirl.
Take care son
Love Mom
Agreed! I think homophobia and gay bashing is becoming just as prevalent in this day and age as racism is and I think it has to stop as well. However, you don't have to sell me on Hillary Clinton. I'm a huge fan of Hillary and her husband Bill (even with his dick out of his pants). If Hillary ever ran for president, I would gladly cast my vote in her direction. I think it's about time a woman had a crack at this country, as the men don't seem to do a very good job with it. In defense of Cassigirl, she merely passed along that email to me. Even if I don't agree with it completely, I am glad that someone has the balls to say some of those things and not care who takes offense to them. This is a free country and I will gladly print anything here whether I agree with it or not. All opinions are welcome! That is the only way we can start getting along as a society if we listen to all sides. I also don't think it takes two parents to raise a child but a lot of the villages are full of idiots, so I think whatever benefits the child is the right way. Thanks for the letter mom, they are always some of my favorite to read and answer. I'd also like to hear from Cassigirl, since that was just an email, maybe you'd like to clear your name with some of your own opinions. I'd love to hear them....
Vote Hillary 2004!
Most (clearing throat) exultant one – I completely disagree with your line of thinking, logic, & misguided anger at religion. In fact, I suggest you take a few minutes online or at the library to research what you may think you feel. You are so proud of science - are you not? In fact, you stated “If it were up to me, I would ban religion and let science run rampant!” I, too, am proud of the hard work and diligent efforts stemming (no pun intended) from our science community. But what happens when science runs amuck? Take Nazi Germany as an example – they tortured & murdered people in the name of science. Now whether you agree or disagree, the scientific method works because of ethics, which in most cases society has learned as a result of some form of religion. You also mentioned you read the bible “a number of times.” If that’s the case, did you fail to read every chapter of the Bible or did you simply skip around a bit while being forced to attend church and/or private schooling? The Devil’s Advocate knows of numerous biblical references to this particular subject matter. For example, Genesis 9:6 warns us against killing our fellow humanity, who are created in the very image of God (Gen. 1:26-27). Furthermore, human embryonic life--as well as all of creation--exists primarily for God’s own pleasure and purpose, not ours (Col. 1:16). Finally, and most importantly, we are not free to pursue good ends through immoral or unethical means (Deut. 27:25). For the record, you stated, “The “right” would rather just pitch these aborted fetuses” - not true! The “right” is simply trying to consider other ways of obtaining the embryonic stem cells without killing the embryo in the process. Question, why not use adult tissue, umbilical cords, &/or bone marrow instead? These medical techniques (ethical too I might add) have been very successful in the long haul battling serious afflictions vs. the young defenseless embryos that have not yet shown effective long-term effect? As far as Darwinism’s “Survival of the Fittest” theory, you need to seriously read-up on what he really meant - it’s not what simpletons have led you to believe! As far as human cloning – you’re right, you have watched too much sci-fi! Until next week, I am the Devil’s Advocate!
Oh, how I love a good browbeating by the Devil's Advocate. I haven't had my fix lately. Welcome back! I almost had a flashback to religion class from this letter. I am sorry you disagree with me but I do need some clarification on your position....whose ethics are you speaking of? The ethics of our country's president, a right wing politician, who is against abortion and stem cell research but completely in favor of the death penalty. Well, I suppose that makes sense. (Smell the sarcasm) I believe I have some assemblage of ethics, not many mind you but there are a few. I do not believe life begins at conception so it does not really interfere with my ethics to support stem cell research from embryos. And especially when these people just throw out the leftover embryos, why can we not save them from the dump and use them for research to help ailing members of our society? So before you question my ethics, we need to figure out whose ethics we are using for reference. The other ways you mention, the "more ethical" ways, to harvest stem cells do not work as well as embryonic stem cells. If we are going to experiment we should do it correctly and with the best possible resources, not half-assed with substandard materials, don't you think? We are trying to cure diseases that affect millions of people around the world so pardon me for not feeling sorry for the beloved embryo. It is usually the people bitching about the unborn that are eating eggs for breakfast. I like my embryos scrambled, thank you. We currently have an abundance of people on this planet, let us use these embryos to help the people already living.
I wait for my next tongue lashing.

P.S. "This preservation of favorable individual differences and variations, and the destruction of those which are injurious, I have called Natural Selection, or the Survival of the Fittest."

Right from Darwin's mouth....I think I hit the nail right on the head. Too bad you don't agree with me because I was going to ask you to join me in making an army of cloned superhuman drones to take over the world. Your loss!
R.James, this is Kathy from OK. A;; things are economy, sex, power, money! Remember stem cells might be a step in the process to a finish line of sorts, but who and how the money is distributed needs to be protected by law. 17% of the children who received organic heart valve replacement in the mid 80's died of mad cow disease. Also the children recieving growth hormones were placed at the same risk. Later, You are a bright man Mr. James.
Thanks for the comment Kathy but I am not sure I quite understand the point you are trying to make. (Maybe I am not as bright as you think) I would love to hear a more in depth explanation, if you have the time. Go to the contact me section and send it to my e-mail address. Also, thanks for stopping by the site. Hope to hear from you again.
The Rev.
Quick comment - why do you insist with the notion young embryonic stem cells have a proven medical record? It may have shown some short-term benefit with various ailments, but nothing long-term. In fact, all clinical tests have repeatedly proven young embryonic cells cease to function in any sort of positive manner (or any manner at all for that matter). Just so you know – CAN YOU FEEL IT?
-Devil’s Advocate
I do not insist on any notion. I just think it wouldn't hurt to do a little more research that could possibly help millions of people. No, I don't feel it. Are you sure you're doing it right? BURN!
The Rev.
Dear Jamie,
Back to stem cells and the surrounding research. Sorry about the vague note I left on your web site, your mother was standing by my side, so I was hurried. She was ready to go up town, but I was too impressed with your site to let it pass without a note to the author.
Medical awareness and the treatments that evolve are a funny thing of economy drive. (Ms. Hurst and I short-hand that and other subjects down to Sex-money-power) Freud or Jung take your pick and throw in some Adler...ha.)
But aside from that, what I meant, was as we begin to use stem cell implants we gather momentum to find new and subsequent uses. That's great yes... like discovering that growth hormone could be harvested from cows and pigs; then prior to 1985, given to children, who didn't produce enough, or utilize the steroid properly.
We never imagined that mad cow disease was being given in a viral state to those children with the natural harvest. Later due to such need... artificial steroids were manufactured with improved speed and quality. Natural harvests were sterilized and the animals were checked for a disease thought newly discovered. That led to another Nobel prize winner trek.
The man who chased down the evolution of Scrappies, and found the disease went all the way back to what laypersons refer to as cannibalism! Anthropologists have long tracked the primitive acts of eating the organs from either enemies or those beloved as funeral rites in many forms over centuries. No one wanted to believe the act of eating the organs infected with scrappies 3 thousand years prior would be passed on to animals in our recent centuries. Then the act of feeding animal to same animal would become a risk of death to all meat eaters, or those in contact with infected animal by-products as rose dust powders etc. . Such an isolated ritual, to manifest such a modern crisis.
Isn't it ironic, that again we are using the micro and the macro of humans, and find some amazing ways to ingest or incert back into the human, a form of the human, and then honor it as medicine. Before medicine dawned were simplistic rituals and we seem... still to take our cues from those rituals and initiate sophisticated practices.
Can we imagine possible ramifications lets rephrase that, probable ramifications... Could stem cells carry a 'micro virus,' not yet potent... it grows to manifest symptoms, that must be recognized and later in the equation, addressed?
And just who benifits from that equation?
We would of course be stupid to stop research, but we would be void of all history to assume micro implants, and minute chemical alterations don't hold an element of evolution. The spark of unknown disease is also an unnamed life from another point of view.
The Overman cometh, or is that the Iceman, or is it just the Walrus?
Please send your website address to us in OK. We enjoy the young/jung and the K. Marx of it all.
We are all so proud of you Jamie,
Your Mom's best friend
Kathy Holley.
Thanks for the letter Kathy, and what a letter at that! I am glad that you could go a little more in-depth on this one. I found it to be a very interesting read. I agree with your point, about the problems which may arise down the road that we are not aware of yet. I do however think that this is all part of the experimentation process and where would we be without trial and error. Sooner or later we come to a point where we must either evolve or die and I think we would be better off evolving. Unfortunately, as with all things in life, some people down the line might suffer because of what we do now. I think it was Spock, in Star Trek II that said, "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few." (Sorry to quote Star Trek but it is just the geek in me.) We have to think of how we can help our species, as a whole, and to stop scientific research on something as important as this would hinder us in the long run. I feel it always comes down to those simplistic rituals because, deep down inside, that is what we are. Animals with a spider web of complex rituals based on our ancient simplistic rituals. Our main ritual however, I believe, is the search for the meaning of life; the eternal unanswered question of why we are here. That one question, which eludes the human race, will forever be asked until a viable answer can be produced. So we should continue this search for it and if that means experimenting on things unknown, then that is what we have to do. To hinder scientific research would be to hinder the human race. If we fail, then at least we tried to grab the brass ring and that is better than doing nothing at all. Thanks again for the letter Kathy and I always enjoy learning a new thing or two. I would love to print anything else you feel like sharing, as I am sure the fans of my site would enjoy it too.
The Rev.
Dear Reverend James,
Sorry to comment so late on the subject matter of stem cell research
but I tuned in late. I agree with you that we must always go forward in the study of science. In today's society the unethical seems to be an every day occurence. One must question why people have a problem with someone doing something positive with all of the negative that surrounds us. And what better name to do it in than science. While reading through your site I have also seen the "want" to quote the bible. It seems to me that in today's day and age the bible seems quite outdated. That of course, is only my opinion.
-Vestigial Philosopher
And a good opinion at that! I agree that the bible is outdated, so I will watch myself for any blatant quotation of scriptures. As for my other readers, not naming any names but you know who you are, I can not speak for them.
Thanks for your thoughts and I hope to hear more soon!
Greetings all, To me, bringing any moral code into the realm of public education or assistance is wrong. I have only one right and obligation concerning my beliefs - to pass them on to my own children - not to the rest of the People. Everyone else in this nation has the right to "judge truth and falsehood in an open market" - to judge these things without the guidance of those who would teach morality in exchange for a crust of bread. I believe JFK said it best, “A nation that is afraid to let its people judge truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people." In closing, although I appear to be in agreement with the Reverend, it’s only a coincidence! :) Besides, George double-ya Bush is an ASS!
- Devil’s Advocate
Don't let the Devil's Advocate fool you because I think deep down inside he/she agrees with me all the time. Just admit it! By the way, thanks for the joke. I added it to the fan additions page, so check it out everyone.
Wouldn't the world be a better place if instead of passing our beliefs and prejudices on to our children we taught them how to think. Not thinking as in learned behavior but truly deductive reasoning. That may give them the power to figure out their own morality in a world that is pretty messed up morally and ethically. There is a right and wrong and we have a brain to guide us if we can use our intuitive process to get there.I didn't care if my children grew up to be doctors and lawyers. I wasn't even fond of them going to school because of the brain washing that occurs there. I did want them to figure out what made them happy in the world and I wanted them to do no harm to themselves or others. That in its own right requires a lot of effort. I am very proud of the Reverend because he has an opinion. I also admire the Devils advocate and Dark angel for sharing their thoughts with us. But we all need to be against mental stagnation and thinking and sharing thoughts is the best way.
-Mom
Stop mental stagnation and send in your thoughts! I would like to hear from everyone that enjoys my page, or doesn't, no matter what your opinion. The more eclectic the mix of thoughts I receive, the more interesting my site becomes. I would also like anything else you might want to add, such as pics, articles, jokes, etc. My fans additions page is kinda bare.
Most Reverent Reverend-
I was perusing your latest skinny and I believe we are mostly in agreement on this week's topic. I too feel that our privacy has become practically non-existent. There are many different avenues in which we are losing our privacy, besides the ones you have named. I think you might be interested to learn of the presence of "Web Bugs." Web Bugs are imperceptible tags embedded into personal web pages by the providers of "free web page" services, such as Yahoo's Geocities, AOL and others. Hmmm.....how safe is your page Reverend? I suggest you hit http://www.bugnosis.org/ to learn more about this growing "tracking system." You can also download their "Bug finder." I figured I would pass this pertinent information along to all of your constant readers.
As always, fighting the good fight!
Dark Angel
Thanks for the tip!
My fellow Reverend, Regarding you most recent "skinny" about the Condit situation, I must agree with the fact that he shouldn't have to say shit to the media about anything regarding his personal matters with Ms. Levy. This is what the Investigative teams are for in the Police Dept. and his bosses. But I must say, "what I would do if I were in his shoes" would be to come out to the media and stand up to them. Use tact and forcfulness to explain the situation and then tell them that if anyone starts fucking with my family, I will slice your throats while you sleep. (or if anyone busts out my car window) To some it up, he really needs to grow some balls and stand up for his image. You can't tell me he doesn't see the news throw more dirt on his head. Climb out of the fuckin hole dumbass. And now if you'll excuse me, my Rice Krispies are at a critical stage.
-Madmonk
I'm not the one to dish out hate, but sometimes you just have to slice some throats! You know what I'm saying?! There's a bunch of savages in this town.
I have a few choice words to say about the window. I believe that someone has a personal deal with you. I too had parked on that very street and got my mirror busted off and a dent on my door. I feel that if people have a problem or want to fuck with you in some way, they should do it to your face. At least you can have a chance to protect you and your stuff. A lot of people these days are such cowards, that they don't have the balls to do or say things to your face. My theory is, if you don't have the balls, don't do it at all. Someway or Somehow someone will find out, and it will always come back in their faces. So you might as well have some balls and do it the mature way. And that's all I have to say about that subject.
-Sissy Kates
Do you really think someone has a personal problem with the Rev.? I find that hard to believe. I never have a bad word to say about anyone. (Sarcasm, can you smell it?) Maybe we need to go find these pricks and learn em' a little ass kickin 101.
The Devil's Advocate has been busy lately...but I had to shout out to my fellow buds - "IF I CAN EVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT THOSE FUCKS THAT BLEW UP THOSE INNOCENT PEOPLE - DEAD!"
- D
Thanks for the shout out! I think we would all like to get our hands on those "fucks". I know I do my share of bitching about our government but I AM an American and proud of it. I would love to strangle the bastards that raped our country. I know that I am not alone when I say that we all have heavy hearts this week.
Dear Sunshine,
Sorry to hear about your window. I believe having enough balls to look your opponenet in the face would cure a lot of problems. The scum countries that cheer our deaths while hiding behind terrorists have made me as mad as you are about your window although I will probably control my anger a bit better being older and all. Be safe
love
mom
Mom, sometimes you just have to let your anger out. It's not good to keep it bottled up and I don't think your age has anything to do with it. Maybe you should start a web page... I find it's great for expressing your anger. (www.momsmad.com) I think everyone should be outraged about what has happened. It is an atrocity that can not be compared to anything. The forthcoming casualties will put Pearl Harbor to shame. They also attacked our civilians with our civilians, which is unforgivable. Revenge should be swift and severe.
Well, this is a subject that I have a lot of opinions about, but I will only share a few. First off, I don't think the Americans realize that they are fighting a religious attack by using religion. NOT gonna solve anything, it's just gonna make things worse. Don't get me wrong, my heart goes out to those affected by this tragedy. I read the part where that guy said that lesbians and abortionists may have helped cause this. that pisses the hell out of me. I am a firm believer in the freedom of choice and if people want to be gay, fantastic, be gay. Second off, I wish that the television would just take a little bit of a break from this. Unless they have something new to say, there is no need to keep repeating this stuff, it just makes people more upset about it. I suppose I could go on and on about this but there is no sense in repeating things huh?
-SISSY KATES
I agree, I think the news is putting the crisis on a little too much. I must be a junkie though because I seem to flip it on all the time. I guess it's the way our society is now. We are in the information age, so we all jones for the info baby! I like my fix fast and furious.
I agree that some of these people may be "religious fanatics" in certain aspects BUT don't they also seem to be "against our democracy" and even just plain "against America?!"
"Whatever limits us, we call fate. "
-Dark Angel
Agreed. You don't tell your followers to hunt down and kill Americans, unless you are just straight up against us.
One government - hmm, very interesting! I like it, a lot! In fact, we could use the United Nations as a sort of universal Supreme Court. Can’t say I agree with you on the notion of “it is definitely high time we join up with them again and give them back a taste of what they used to have” – as the English can be assholes – remember India & Scotland? But, I love the idea in general to unite us all. Of course, we would need to iron out a few minor details such as currency, a more comprehensive legal and health system, and a new executive/legislative/judicial way of doing things. In short, the idea to shape the world into one happy cozy community sounds nice. Well, except for one small detail – with absolute power comes absolute corruption! What do we do about Capitalism versus Socialism? Folks like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, and good ol’ Opra may not particularly care to redistribute their wealth so that Africa has dirt!? In a non-related topic - the Devil’s Advocate apologizes for his/her lack of weekly contributions. The Devil’s Advocate is a busy person fighting ignorance everywhere! Until next time, keep fighting the good fight!
- Devil’s Advocate
I think our country has changed forever. The Devil's Advocate is back and agreeing with me?! I think the next step is peace on earth. Seriously though, it's nice to get your thoughts back here, as it has been awhile. Yes, I agree the English can be assholes but did you forget about Germany and Italy? The English don't get to be a lone superpower this time; they just get to come along with everyone else. Absolute power does corrupt absolutely! That's one hurdle, along with the capitalism vs. socialism debate. Oprah might have to switch from a book club to a dirt club, is that too much to ask? My idea isn't perfect since it is only a brief outline (or the ravings of a madman, jury is still out on that) but it is nice to know you are on board. We only need to convince 6 Billion more people and the plan is a go! I am glad you stopped by to throw some brain droppings around here. Keep fighting ignorance; I think it is the most dangerous thing in our society today.
Fight the good fight
The Rev.
Yeah, I have a comment - America is not a country anymore but rather a greedy selfish egotistical corporation bent on global domination no matter the cost! I knew - I KNEW we'd sell out the first chance we got! Every greedy business man/woman were just rubbing their grubby little hands like a rat cleaning his paws. I knew we'd witness, "God Bless America & We Stand United - now please buy this!" I just have to laugh - we as a nation are sooooo upset about the September 11th tragedy, yet we fail to see (or simply turn a blind-eye) to the atrocities we commit on other individuals in the name of "freedom." As you Reverend – I am proud to be living in a country where we can praise the devil, God, or the tree in my front yard. I just find it hard to swallow the “United We Stand” mantra! Let’s get back to living our lives as we “Americans” know how – buying our goods from Wal-Mart where most of the products are made through the sweat and tears of children in Southeast Asia, drinking our beers and eating our bon-bons on our fat asses while watching hours upon hours of TV (wrestling and porn). God Damn - I’m proud to be American! And too all my fans – sorry I’ve been MIA lately, fucking got laid off and been busy looking for another mind-numbing job. Oh well, at least I have Wal-Mart... The D - Devil's Advocate!
I couldn't have sold that argument better, even if I had an American flag slapped to it. Thank you Devil's Advocate for an intelligent slap in the face. I also saw this coming a mile away and knew it was only a matter of time before we sold that American unity and spirit down the river. Way to be one of the few that can see through all this crap.
The Rev.
I had an e-mail sent to me and it was about God and how the people
are excepting things that the government throws at us. For instance, the
gov. says that it's ok for our kids to have abortions,so the peole say ok.
(Use our own mind people) It also said that people believe everything in
the paper, but they don't believe the bible. when I was in high school (a
catholic one), my religion teacher said the majority of the bible was
not true, it's just stories for people to base their life around. Then
this e-mail said that Santa believed in God. ok people let's get real, is
anyone friends with santa, how in the hell do they know. This e-mail also
commented on God in schools. Not every kid is christian, not every child
believes in god, most don't even understand the subject. At the very end of this e-mail it stated: "everyone wonders why the world is going to shit " that was refering to people not believing in God and not letting him in our schools. I was a practicing catholic for many years and all I have to say is that it's a crock of SHIT!!!!!!!! for crying in the night people, let others live their lives they way that they see fit, don't make comments on what makes them happy. Let me tell everyone something, God doesn't fix problems or save peoples lives, and he doesn't decide what happens after you die. when I read this e-mail it upset me greatly. people have the right to live their life the way they want. ALL YOU BIBLE BEATERS LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!
-SISSY KATES
I agree completely! Remember folks, every time you force your opinions on others, you are no better then Nazis. You all remember them right?! Matching uniforms, book burnings, hating those who are different, forced religion...kind of sounds like Christian schools, huh? 'Nuff said. Think for yourselves!
Dear Son,
I just thought I should let you know that the story about the 5 year old girl belonging to atheists is a bad country western song. I am not even kidding about that. I agree with you about the crap that is spread on the internet. If you want to read something horrifying read Caleb Carrs latest book about the year 2023 when people have believed everything that they have read on the internet and news as gospel . They no longer have the ability to even think only accept the info. No processing ability at all. Thanks for the address.
love Mom
A country song, of course, I should have known.
Fellow Rev.
It's 4 o'clock in the morning and there is absolutely nothing on television. Which leads me to ask WHY? Just because I choose not to rummage about the earth during the same hours as Joe Shmoe, doesn't mean I have to watch pure shit during the hours of 2 thru 5. And this includeds all those fucking Infomercials. Maybe this should be your next skinny, seeing how I KNOW your up at those hrs. What have you been watching? -Madmonk
No love for the night owls! I am also quite sick of the programming we are forced to deal with in the wee hours. Just because I am not one of the numbers, that has to hit the hay at 10:30 sharp after the local news, doesn't mean I should not have quality television. (If there is such a thing.) Perhaps I am so bitter with our world because I am forced to watch the daily atrocities on the news all night long since there is nothing else on...besides "paid programming" or "sign off"--and I have heard bad reviews of them.
However, there are some alternatives. I find a good book is better than TV anytime and, at 3:30 in the morning, masturbating is also more enjoyable than the "telly." Hard to masturbate to the news though.
Books, late night TV or masturbation?! Oh the choices, us latenighters have!
Maybe I should get a Tivo....?
The Rev
Dear Rev.
I enjoyed your webpage. Like most American's who try to think for themselves you seem to realise that your country has more than a few problems, especially with regards to lobby groups and government. You seem to really harp on the "Christian Right," and truth be told, some of those groups really seem to have a messed up view of what society should be like. Nevertheless, one passage caught my attention in particular: "When I was a Christian, I can remember feeling guilty, ashamed, misunderstood, neglected, talked down to, shunned and even a little stupid." Well no kidding, who ever gave the impression that Christians wouldn't? But on to my real reason for writing, why did you turn away from Christianity? Don't tell me about the Crusades, the Ku Klux Klan, Ireland, or any of those other organizations that claim they are doing what all good Christians should. That has as much truth as saying that Osama Bin Laden represents the views of Islam or that the mess in the Israel is because of Jews and Palestinians are both following their respective religions correctly. You say you don't believe anything about God but I find that hard to believe; you seem a bit too anti-Christian to think that they are all just deluded. Looking forward to your response,
-Peter McClung
(ps - In case you haven't seen it, check out the Juicy Cerebellum, you may find it amusing.)
Peter,
Thanks for the letter! I always enjoy hearing new points of view. In response to your question about God, I myself am an Atheist. I do not believe in a "God". Most people are more comfortable with the term Agnostic, which is fine by me since I do not claim to know the unknowable. The reason I turned away from Christianity, well I guess it is not a reason, more like reasons. All of my formative years growing up, I was told what to believe and which way was "right" and which was "wrong." It was all black and white and it is either believe or burn, with no in between. It is hard for a person to believe in something they had been taught, since birth, was "right", when your gut instinct screams that it is anything but right! I did not lose my religion until I was close to adulthood and by then the major damage to my thoughts and beliefs had already been done. It is hard to go back now and narrow it down to a single act that turned me; more like a collection of things. Everything from being told daily I was going to hell for questioning my faith or being made to feel guilty for every action I did that they did not personally agree with. It just leaves a lot of deep seeded resentment, when you come to find that what was ingrained in you from the beginning as absolutely right is nothing more than a sales pitch, a crutch, a weakness. In my opinion, it all comes down to the control factor and I was not about to let them control me anymore. However, I do believe in freedom wholeheartedly, so although I might not agree with Christianity, I fully support their right to choose Christianity. (I know sometimes it doesn't seem that way in my rants, but I assure you I do.) I hope no one takes my remarks personally, as they are only one man's opinion that I gladly share with whomever cares to read them. If I am lucky maybe, just maybe, I will plant a seed. Keep coming back to my page and write back again...I welcome intelligent discussion anytime!
The Rev.
hey there brother
I just wanted to make a quick comment. I really don't think that allowing the priests to marry is going to solve anything. Obviously it's the priests themselves, you don't see the nuns molesting children. So it's clear that here is something fucked up with those priests minds and their thoughts. I have said all that I need to because I could go on and on about this.
- sissy Kates
If it was the nuns molesting prepubescent boys, then it might improve their attendance in school and maybe even church. Come on nuns, stand up for equality in the church, MOLEST A YOUNG MAN!!
Well, I don't believe it! Congratulations on eking out a full year of your weekly/monthly reprisals of repute and disdain for all that is holy. I have to admit; I am somewhat impressed to find the website still active after some 12 months later. I’m most impressed with your ability to continue writing about personal torments and repulsions whilst you imply a certain sense of egoistic omniscience. Or rather, on how imperfect our society is and how it might someday implode upon itself. Needless to say, not being a huge fan of your - dare I say, “not-so challenging “ ideology – I can appreciate the candor. Don’t get me wrong Rev., I’m attracted to your writings, but in much the same way a flea is attracted to a dog’s ass – love the chow but hate the smell. In short, keep up the good fight. And remember to sidestep some of the crap that stems from your frontal cortex area from time-to-time. I will keep in touch! (Insert evil laughter here.)
-Yours truly, Devil’s! Advocate
By the way, for an anarchist you seem to do a lot of complaining while defending free speech (i.e. – your last quote from Justice Douglas). A 1st Amendment Right in which our great country has supplied you with – just a thought!
Well, well, well...
If it isn't my pal, the Devil's Advocate. It's about time you rolled your ass back in here to give me the browbeating I so desperately need. Just think D.A., you've been reading the Rev's rants for a whole year now. This time you decided to throw in a few backhanded compliments before playing wet nurse to me. I happen to enjoy my "not-so-challenging" ideology. The ideas I put on this page are pretty simple, I agree. It is just a rant I write from time to time, not an essay or a thesis. (If you like more complex ideas, maybe you should start the Devil's Advocate web page. I would be glad to stop by and be "enlightened.") This is just my cozy little place in cyberspace where I can bitch. Seriously speaking, would you want to read some dry, drawn out editorial with no life, no sass? No, you don't come to my page for that. You want the Rev with all his charm and witty repartee. You come here so you can disagree and tell me why. Hence the name, "Devil's Advocate." Where's the fun in sidestepping what falls out of my head? I censor nothing! You'll just have to take the "crap," muck around in it for a while and pull out my clever gems. Moreover, if I didn't write "crap" then you wouldn't have a reason to write in anymore and I, oh so, enjoy your letters. I also agree (no, really) with your last comment that this is a great country and yes, I do enjoy my First Amendment rights. I complain freely with no apologies. A good American dissents, a bad American follows blindly. Just because I have a utopian dream of anarchy, doesn't mean I love my home less than any other American. Now, I know I probably won't see people governing themselves in my lifetime but you wouldn't to rob me of my dream, would you? I will continue to dream about seeing a perfect world someday, but in the mean time I'll point out the reasons why it's not perfect already.
Looking forward to hearing from you again...
The Rev.
Hey there rev.
I gotta give props to good ol' J.C. I believe this was one of the
best skinny's you've had in a while. I know I sure wouldn't mind hearing
from J.C again. He's was a wise man in your interview. This is off the
subject but lately there has been a lot of stupid people. I just want to
know if anyone else noticed???????????
- Sissy Kates
I ALWAYS notice!
Hey all, D here... I loved the interview with J.C.! That was some seriously funny shiat! However, no one orders a weak ass guiness around the D - heck, I would have bitch slapped his white (assuming I was made in his image) ass! You want a beer to last the taste (play on words... damn, I'm good) of time - order a pony of "fat tire" ... only made in Colorado! Anyhoo, keep up the good work... can't wait to read the next skinny! As always, a force to be reckoned with,
- The Devil's Advocate...
P.S. I would be interested to know what Satan's take is with the world as we know it?
Merci beaucoup!
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Satan himself will find the time to sit down and chat. I saved his life once so he owes me one. I'll have to call up my favor. Stay tuned!
Even JC himself leaning towards buddhism, i gotta love that :) havent been here for a while and this was just what i needed. in all things, peace.
- m.
The Reverend James..... Good for what ails ya!
Great skinny - brought a tear to me eye. As far as Iraq - we need world support if we are to rally a coalition to combat "long-term" terrorism - don't you just hate the ism's? Who are we - John Wayne? Yeah, let's just go in there and (as my neighbor says) nuke the sand crabs... I say, what's the freakin' hurry - other than the so-called chemical weapons Saddam may or may not have? In my opinion, we have superficial propaganda evidence, which yields nothing but fear in an already shaked up country (9.11). Do I think we should rise up against those renegade countries hell-bent on destruction - YES! Do we go in alone - NO! I say - give the UN a chance to do their jobs and give peace a chance - at least one last time! - Devil's Advocate
I couldn't have said it better myself. Since when did we become a first strike nation? If we strike first, and alone, that makes us look like a bully. How can we possibly be scared of Iraq? Ten years ago, they attacked us with rocks for crying out loud! We lost what, 250 people in the Persian Gulf war? A lot of those were even from friendly fire. Iraq lost 1,000,000. I don't think they are that much of a threat and if anything, we are a threat to them. We can turn their country into a charred crater and I think they know that. With our Special Op's forces, why can't we just go in and take out Saddam period? Why do we have to bomb the entire civilian population? They say over and over again, they just want Saddam out. Well then go take him out and leave the warmongering to the greedy oil barrens and keep the civilians out of it!
Pari yarego, Reverend! I believe I have been away for far too long, as there is a new picture and obviously a new way of doing the skinnies. Through all your ranting and carrying on, I never knew you had the soul of an artist. Bravo, my good man! Query: Do you believe that a war against Iraq at this juncture in time, will result in a George Stewart-like world? The way you delve into the minute details, such as your narrator's job and way he spends his free time, are reminiscent of Stewart's work. Although Stewart's protagonist is the "last man on Earth," he does meet up with isolated survivors here and there. If you have not read "Earth Abides," then I definitely recommend this one to you.
Enough of my foray into literary comprehension, did you hear your president's speech last evening? I find it unbelievable that he would single out Iraq and Hussein as the primary danger to America. This country does not have nuclear capabilities yet other countries, which are conveniently America's allies, already have the nuclear weapons themselves. Whether this "war" is a Wag the Dog like attempt at a re-election or a veiled act of vengeance against the man who tried to murder his father or an endeavor to gain access to the abundant oil of Iraq, in any case war is a poor idea. Not just for America, but for the rest of world as well. As for the chemical and biological weapons that Iraq is certain to have? Why force their hand and cause the death of thousands of people?! America has never been one for preemptive attacks, so why now? Always thinking...
"Whatever limits us, we call Fate."

Thanks for writing Dark Angel!
It has been awhile since I've heard from you. I have been trying new things with the skinny, but don't worry, I still plan to mix some good ranting in as well. Variety is the spice of life, you know. The good Rev doesn't like to bitch all the time. I have not read Earth Abides yet, but I have added it to my list of books to read because it does seem rather interesting. I read the synopsis of it and I think it's right up my alley.
Yes, I did see the president's speech last night. I thought it was a prime example of political propaganda, rallying the sheep if you will. I also heard him reemphasize that he will attack terrorists and those who harbor them, like Iraq. What he forgot to mention was Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Iran, et al. I guess those countries that harbor terrorists aren't part of his vendetta against Saddam. To me this seems like a pissing contest between the two of them. I think we should put them in a boxing ring and make them fight for it, that way we can leave the innocent civilians out of it. Preemptive attacks are for bullies. We don't let our police officers shoot someone in the head, then go check if they have a gun. Well, maybe sometimes we do but then at least we suspend them, albeit with pay. Hmmmmm...
The Rev
Ok, I'm Jones'n (sp?) for another skinny... I've been checking it every other day - and no skinny! What the f*c%!? (smile)... I've got alot on my mind and this is a great outlet... OH! Have you considered going "www" yet? I know it costs monies, but think of the larger audience! Heck, I think between the two of us and our (often) opposing views, we could start our own editorial! So, let's get the lead out and throw me a bone already! (smile).
-The D
I know you're "Jones'n," my friend. Rev withdrawals are a bitch! I know I sometimes go too long between skinnies, but I like to write when I'm inspired. I could pump out a bunch of mindless drivel, but then I would be cheating you, the loyal reader. I wouldn't mind a larger audience, but that's not why I write this page. I do it just so I can have my little space on the web where I can say anything I want, kind of like my own pulpit. I do enjoy jousting with you however and anytime you feel the urge to rant, just holler and I will gladly post it. I'll even give you your own column, if you like. The more opinions on my page, the better!
The Rev
I've got a nuke in my pocket, man! Just kidding, I'm just happy to be reading this column -- and what a column. The Devil’s Advocate wouldn’t be doing his/her part if I didn't add a name or two from your neatly composed list of retards! First, I'd have to add Anna Nicole -- my god woman could you be a bigger idiot? Life if just not fair when you have this moron parading around town crying about her custom made furniture by Bobby Trendy. Oh yeah, Bobby needs to go too. In fact, maybe the two of them should take turns rolling down a hill enclosed within a barrel filled with razor blades. Second, Rush Limbaugh - that fat, egoistic, narrow-minded, sounds like he has a cock stuffed in his mouth (republican elephant's shlong) right-wing conservative fuck! Next, Martin Short needs to take a warm bath while blow-drying his hair. I mean, anyone that has a show berating overweight people just to gain a laugh is a pathetic little man. Besides, Martin you are a washed up, turn your head and cough (three amigos), little keebler looking insensitive ass that could simply vanish and the world might be a better place. Next, Dr. Laura (another first-name disaster) for being a hypocrite - SHES NOT EVEN A DOCTOR! Dr. Laura, a false identifying wannabe Jewish cleric, please do the world a favor "have sex and loosen up!" My only request is that you use three forms of contraception simultaneously - - the world is full of assholes. Finally, but certainly not all-inclusively, Lars from Metallica – one word, SELLOUT! Sure, they have a right to freedom of speech, but Lars – let someone else speak on your behalf you fucking moron! I, too, could go on and on. If I think of anymore I will let you know… oh wait, I thought of one more – the makers of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – damn them if they won’t be the end of my clogged heart! Yours truly,
-The D
Good list! I knew you could back me up with a few assclowns that need to step up to the plate and suck on the end of a shotgun like a big black cock! They need to stop polluting the collective unconscious, especially Lars. I fucking hate that little bastard! The sad thing is Metallica used to be one of my favorite bands, that is, before they sold their fans out. I wish Lars was a cat, so he could kill himself nine times. Speaking of used to be's, remember when Anna Nicole was sexy? I think that was before they let her talk. Rush Limbaugh is a given; I'm just glad that you don't hear as much from him anymore. (Maybe I'm just not listening...?) My problem is I think so many people should kill themselves that it's hard for me to think of them all in one sitting. Maybe that's because my list is always growing as a new breed of ignorance is always cropping up. As always D, you're a force to be reckoned with. Although I haven't had a good browbeating from you in a while. You didn't go soft, did you? Maybe my next skinny will give you the opportunity to whip out some of that "D.A." nasty. I'll be waiting...
The Rev
I just wanted to congratulate those republican fucks for passing a bill
that may allow the government to pry into our personal lives. they may now
be able to know every little thing that we do or say. All of this just to
find the terrorists. Do I think this will help? Hell no, way to go against
our rights. I hope the people who voted for these fucks are happy about
loosing their rights, because they are responsible for this.

Welcome to 1984!
What is life - but a series of meaningless events? Seriously, in the final analysis, life holds no real purpose. All of us are locked into a framework of ignorance, misuse of power, and greed. The trick is is to not allow these malignant representations of society to infiltrate our minds. The "reality" is that we are in control - an individual can and does make a difference. The choices you make on a daily basis shape (albeit, indirectly) the world in which we live in. For instance, if you were to shoot your next-door neighbor - change will occur. You will (assuming you are caught) find yourself in prison, the cost pf prison raises taxes, and taxes motivate consumers, etc.... I guess what I'm trying to say it that everything we do is cyclical. As the old adage goes, "what goes around comes around." So, where do we go from here? Well, we can live our lives knowing that we are only in control of ourselves and of those immediately around us... we can pray to whatever deity (or superstition) we choose... we can stop complaining about life and start enjoying it... we can! Anyhow, that's all I really wanted to say - I could have gone into politics and religion a bit more but it's all the same. Simply put, life is more than a box of chocolates - it's the whole damn industry of chocolate - good & bad. Existentialist extraordinaire,
-The D
PS – I believe we choose to enslave ourselves as long as we are a capitalist society…. Then again, I enjoy the freedom of choice – go figure!
I agree with your "Chaos Theory" of how people make a difference in a vague, roundabout sort of way; however I do disagree with your "reality" of individuals being in control. If you are in control, stop this impending war with Iraq, if you can. Or stop the media from blanketing the truth with propaganda and so called patriotism. How can we stop the ignorant masses from buying into this plethora of fear and consumerism? The answer is...we can't! So yes, I do agree with the chaos theory, like when a butterfly flaps it's wings and all that. Although I do not think that the individual can make a difference, not nowadays anyway. Unless said individual has access to mass media and a giant PR firm to get their point across, which 99.9% of the nation's population don't, then they can't make a noticeable difference in the political agenda of this country. If it makes you feel better to keep voting on it, then by all means, go ahead. Just look at how well it worked with our last election. I enjoy my life more than most, believe me, but if I stopped complaining what would I write about on my web page? How would I vent? I guess I could move into a trailer, get drunk on Busch light and beat my wife. That seems to work for most of the crackers in this country. There I go, waxing poetic again. Anyway, sorry the response is so jaded but I've been watching the news more than usual lately and I just saw Bowling For Columbine, which I highly recommend! Together they've done a number on my hope for this country, not like there was much hope there to begin with. I'm still smiling though!!!
The Rev.
Well, it's about damn time! Do you realize how difficult it was to go through Rev. withdrawals? Glad you made it back. Well, we are at war. Um, okay. What’s next on the agenda? Sorry if I appear a bit lethargic but, I really don’t care. This entire war is a farce and I do not believe in it! What the world needs now is a group hug. So, read a book, smoke a fat one, and grab hold of your next door neighbor, your boss, co-worker, doctor, hell – anyone! All we really have is each other – so get out of the house, walk a dog, go to the zoo, play brick, whatever – just get out more people! If I may borrow from my nearest and dearest, grab a book and find a nice shady patch of grass for a couple hours. In short, life is what we make of it – not what curious George W. wants to make it – a society bent on global imperialism. And, for the record, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I do support our troops. For, it is those individuals (i.e. – by the people and for the people) that serve to protect our country that I owe my allegiance to! Now if you will excuse me – I’ve got a television to turn off!

I couldn't agree more. The scary thing is that you used to disagree with me all the time, now we seem to be in agreement on most topics. What's going on with this world when the Rev. and the D are on the same side all the time? I think I read something about that in the bible; book of Revelations, maybe? Well, you know what they say, "May we live in interesting times."
Thanks for the quote, I added it to my quotes page.
The Rev.
Parp... I love it! I am so going to use that - hope you don't mind!? By the way, I could appreciate last week's "rant" but was so burned out with politics that I just couldn't muster up enough energy to shoot something back. Unfortunately, due to time constraints I only have time to part a haiku... the moon's monthly wane forced to ride the red wave crest wish i were a boy hands and feet, they ache grasp the medicine tightly the minutes just crawl the pain decreases you make a joke and i laugh today you don't die
- The D
By all means use it, abuse it!
I like the Haiku; there's nothing like venting through poetry--it's one of my favorite things to do. I hear you on the politics burn out. I'm almost at the point where I wish Bush would get his way on everything, just so this whole system will come crashing down on the heads of all these gaping assholes. So many people seem to want this prick in office so bad with his 60% approval rating. Remember the saying "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it." I hope they get it in spades. Bush in 2004!
