Freddie Mercury memories 2000

This page is written around the day that it is 9 years ago that our dearest Frieddie did leave us and went to another world.
In my humble thoughts he is the man that was the heart and soul of the greatest Rock band ever on Earth,

Queen.

In the spirit of Queen, in the spiriti of Freddie, I feel priviledged to have been knowing his music for over 26 years now, what is more than half my life time.

Here some words from the news groups.

13 September, Chicago

24 November, Excerpt from a mail among my dear friends...

RE: November 24th Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 11:38:36 +0100 Add Addresses Well, what can I say about this day. Outside it is raining, cold and dark. Inside it is warm, but always a strange day. Somehow I developed some traditions around this day. First of all, the night before (what was actually yesterday), I like to play some songs of Freddie, and also the songs tributed to him, as old friends. Since past year, when my dear friend Jacky came in my life, this song got an even deeper meaning. Realizing this song, written for Freddie, but being reflected to so many dears that left too early... On the day, like today, it is a day that I allow myself to be sad. One day in the year, today, I am with tears in the eyes. And people who ask me, why, I tell them with pride, yes, with big pride why I am sad. And how good is it that you can share it. Like Tracy said, how wonderful people are brought together, in this list, in all contacts. The spirit of Freddie, of Queen, the immense impact in life.. Help, I stop or end with a flooding keyboard. :) I remember 9 years ago, when I was working at UNICEF, with my colleague system manager Chris, who appeared to have been to the same Queen events (can you call it concerts??) as me. Some days before that Freddie died we heared that he had aids, and we had a discussion about all the signs that has been there. The innuendo album, the show must go on. Soon be turning around the corner.. And when we were working, that morning, his wife phoned and told us the news. Without much words we closed our door, disconnected the phone, played the music that means so much for us. With that wonderful memories, and all the value that is given to us, I know that I can't live without you. Freddie, I love you. Friends, I love you. Hans ========================================= But even when I'm grey I still be grey my way ========================================== Amen! > Oh my goodness, another year has come and gone and now Freddie has been gone > for 9 long years. I don't much reflect on our loss as much as I should but > I was looking out over Lake Ontario today after getting my coffee (I'm on > the 40th floor of a building) and I just got tears in my eyes. I thought > back on the day he died...November 24, 1991. I was in a hospital bed with > complications from pregnancy with my daughter (she was born on November 29). > The doctor's were trying to induce me and nothing was happening so day after > day, I lay there anxiously waiting and worrying. I don't remember what time > it was that day but I had not heard the official word of his passing > directly....my girlfriend Coralie called me and broke the news. She had > questioned whether or not to tell me as she knew the position I was in and my vulnerable state. I remembered being shattered and crying at the news but thinking to myself how fortunate I was at that moment in the knowledge that within days I would bring a new life to the world. As Freddie drifted away, my daughter and her smile graced my life.

> > Another thought crosses my mind as I write this. Freddie and the rest of Queen brought me fun and laughter and wonderful memories that I will never EVER forget. They filled my teenage years with such great times and in the last few years, brought me together not only with some of the greatest friends I have ever known but also with the man who will be my husband for the rest of my life.

> > Think not on the passing of Freddie and what we all lost and greatly miss, but on the great joys he brought to our lives and what he continues to give us through the music of Queen for years and years.

> > To all my American friends, have a great Thanksgiving. Don't forget to raise a toast to good ol' Fred!!!

> > Cheers.

Freddie in motion I can not tell
How much I feel
I can not tell
What my heart tells to me
Even though you're so far away
Your power is in me, so deep and true
So that even I,
who never met you alive
Can truely say
I miss you

Alf saw Mr BHM in Brussels...

Sunday the 20th me and my wife was in Brussels to see Brian May live.
I missed him when he was supposed to have played in Copenhagen on his last tour (the concert was cancelled (I still don't know why)), but this time I wanted to hear him. The trip was a carride for 1200 km's from Denmark to Brussels, but I would gladly do that to hear Brian.

The Ancienne Belgique was just the perfect place to have the concert. It is not too big, but there are seats everywhere! There is a big floor, 10-15 rows of seats in the back and balconies on both sides.
I don't think it was sold out (the top balconies was not used), but the room seemed crowded anyway.
I have read a lot of other reviews, and I am amazed that people remember the setlist so well (taking notes, I guess.

I could not concentrate on that with Brian so near :)

.
I cannot remember exactly which songs were played, but as I remember it the set-list sounds pretty much like all the other concerts except that there was

no Sleeping on the Sidewalk and no ABBA-songs :)

I cannot remember the he played any unique songs only for Brussels, but I might be mistaken...
It was great to hear Brian, but the Belgians pussled me. It is almost as if they were Queen-fans that had come to the concert without knowing much of Brian's solo stuff. When he played the Queen medley (Fat Bottomed Girls etc.) and other of his Queen songs everybody jumped and clapped, but when he played his solo stuff most of the people stood still and listened (even during "All the Way to Memphis", and

I for one could not stand still

there). I would LOVE to hear many more Mott songs by Brian... Maybe a complete album of Mott-covers :)

The highlights of the concert was to me to hear "China Belle" and "All the Way to Memphis" live, but all in all it was great just to see HIM so closely. Last time I saw Brian was in 1986 also in Brussels where he played with three other guys whose names I cannot remember at the moment :):) Then it was at a much larger venue (Foret Nationale), and they were oh so far away from me...

Another highlight of the concert was the drummer

Eric Singer

. His solo was a
masterpiece
and during the whole concert he was always active one way or another (in the beginning of the concert Brian had to signal him to be quiet when he was singing a silent tune and Eric was drumming the beat).
All through the concert Eric really looked as if he enjoyed playing.

My sister was with us to hear the concert. She has never been a Queen-fan (for you Swedes I can tell you that she used to listen to Harpo (ABBA'ish pop-music for you non-Swedes) in our younger days), but afterwards she said that it was a good concert (and I believe that she meant it). She also said that

she was amazed at how much Brian May sounded like Queen

- in the sense that she had always connected Queen with Freddie, but now she had became aware that Brian May was a HUGE part of the Queen-sound...

On a final note: Before Brian played

"No One But You"

he said that he was going to sing

"the only Queen-song that had never been played by Queen"

. You can interpret this as you like...

Alf

Well, here is my review of the Stockholm gig. Seen by lots, but also by
Micke

Enjoy!!
Pekka

since nobody reviewed

Brian's gig in Berlin

last Friday this will be my chance.

I went to this concert with really great exppectations.
So I thought Brian could only disappoint me, but he didn't !

Let's start from the beginning:

The support band was a local act called 'Blochin 81'.
They performed some kind of Brit-Rock, sounding a bit like Oasis or Suede. They were quite good but most of the audience didn't seem to like them. Some people shouted 'we want Brian' (well, actially it sounded like 've vant prine', think that's called German English!). I have been a bit ashamed of that, because it isn't very polite to run down the support act, even if you don't like them.
But on to Brian....

The setlist was nearly the same as in Spain.
Unfortunately he didn't play 'Why Don't We Try Again'.
When the speaker announced that Brian was late, so someone called T.E. Conway would entertain us instead, I saw many disappointed faces. I told some kids that

this Elvis imitation in fact is Brian

and they smiled again.
They didn't recognize it being Brian! When Space started the crowd couldn't hold on anymore. All of them were screaming and shouting until Brian began to sing.
After the Queen section, which ended with 'The Show Must Go On' (I was so amazed on this one, didn't think he could perform this particular song that well !), Brian played Last Horizon , and

suddenly you couldn't hear the guitar anymore.

It just stopped making any sound !!!!
He excused himself and went on with the

acoustic session.

But when he wanted to play the slow version of 'Hammer To Fall' the guitar problem still hasn't been solved.
After a short try to fix the guitar Brian chose just to sing the song without playing any guitar! In the middle of the second verse a short guitar sound from behind had been heard.
Brian

took a towel and threw it to the back with an angry face

, just to sing on with the sweetest voice I've ever heard.
Jamie Moses had a funny face when he tried to manage playing rhythm AND lead guitar at once! But he did a great improvisation.
Since the guitar still didn't work after that song Brian excused himself another time and the band took a

short break

uitl the problem had been fixed. During the break the crowd sang BhoRap an We Will Rock (well, sort of).

When Brian and the band came back to stage they performed one verse of the fast version of 'Hammer To Fall' and finally we got the guitar solo played by Brian.
The show really amazed me. At the end they played 'Slow Down'. Brian said '

I think we owe you one' because of the guitar problems during the show.

It seemed like the band would have liked to play another one but Brian seemed to have had given as much as he can and simply shook his head.

Since I am a Queen fan since I'm ten years old (my first single was 'Another One Bites The Dust', guess my age!), it is not very surprising that I liked the show. But my wife, who isn't a Queen fan (well, she likes some songs, of course), has been to the concert too. She told me, she was awfully surprised on

how this old man ROCKS.

She loved the show and said that we both should go to every show Brian does here in the future. Let's hope he'll come back soon!

Peace, Love and Kisses,

Dennis.

P.S.: Sorry for the horrible English. Please don't blame me on this one !
