In memory of Freddie Mercury

This page is dedicated to the singer of songs and lover of life, Freddie Mercury
Freddy Mercury, who became famous in the best rockband ever,

Queen.

Well, where shall I start this essay?

It's Friday now, November 30, 2001...
And making this start is hard...
Strange.. I used to be so well with my words...
But now there is nothing but silence at my brand new keyboard...

How it came this far

You know, past Saturday it was November 24th, 2001, 10 years ago that the singer of my favourite band died on behalf of aids..
Many did die before, many did die after, and still do...
But this man, this particular man, makes that I, now, 10 year after that he passed away, am now here still in silent and respectful silence because of him..
Freddie Mercury, singer of songs, lover of life, his impact still lives on, all over the world..

It is so hard to explain to people what this is..
But let me not drown into too deep water now, this is supposed to be a scribble about how I, we, did celebrate the memorial of Freddie Mercury, right! So I better start with that! In a nutshell I shall tell you the backgrounds, for who still doesn't know me, and than come to where I supposed to be..
27 years ago, in 1975 I first discovered Queen by being in their concert in Holland. Consequently Queen rules my life for more than the half of my age, and it was with me in very difficult moments, in joyful moments. A life without queen is not a life for me, and even now Queen cannot perform or produce anymore, I still am caring for their members, their music, and what they all did and still do to my life.
Now that Freddie already is 10 years passed (time flies!!) there were many celebrations worldwide to remember it. I decided to go to London, to the official celebration, organized by the official international Queen fan club.
I went to London with two immortal ladies, Maaike and Annelies. Every word I say about them is not enough to express, so I keep it with that I had good company. And damn good, you all should be jealous!!

Up to Garden Lodge

We spend some time in London and on Saturday we should go to make the memorial day for Freddie. In the morning we should go to Logans Place, the garden lodge, where the house is that Freddie lived so many years in. A good friend of me (what a chat cannot cause), David, should join us. David is an Australian laddy who is living for some years in London and for him it was of course also a special day, being a Queen fan for a very long time too. Some of you who go to read it know him, our David, the gladdy laddy, and the rest, again.. you're not aware what you miss! We went through the early morning of London, the tubes to Garden Lodge. A beautiful day, sunshine and it was relative quiet in London. I don't know how the others experienced it, but the closer we came to Logans' place, the more silent I became. What an impact this man still has in my life.. Life goes on, yes, but on those special days I am more than ever aware of what he is still doing to me. Walking over the streets we saw a supermarket where we decided to buy a small bouquet of flowers, that we could place at the wall at garden lodge. After we left the shop we found out that on the wrapping was written that the flowers were guaranteed for at least 14 days.. what is funny, of course, for flowers placed at the floor against a wall, but, as we agreed, it should have been exactly in Freddie's style.. Do it, and do it with style, right?

We came there and the walls around Mary's house were already filled with many flowers, burning candles and of course, many fans who were there to have their special moments. It is impressive to see so many people there..

We were there for a while, together with our feelings, and together with familiar faces that we know from other queen gatherings.. Queen family, right...

We were there for about 2 hours, it was wonderful to see so many Queen fans there and it felt really special to be there.

More and more flowers were brought, people were drinking champagne and talking about Queen, really nice of course. Incredible, by the way, how many Dutch there were!

We spend the day in London and in the evening we went to the concert hall. There of course was another gathering of many people that we knew, but of course much more that we did not knew. :) The hall was huge, a huge stage and the performance started with some people that wan contests at the Queen conventions in Wales. Nice to see them singing so great, the well known songs were done, of course, and it was good to sing along with the Freddie songs and all the others. We sang along and I was gladly in the company of my cyber-cousin Julie *big smile while writing this * :) Familiar faces on stage too, we had a great time. At 7 exactly we were asked to keep a moment silent, to remember that it was 10 years ago that Freddie went to another world... You probably know how much the silence can speak and it sure did here! Than it went on with the beautiful songs and I can surely say, Freddie should have been proud at the ball that we made of it. And of course, sooner or later it was time for the true break. In the break some people were doing an air guitar contest. Really funny to see, and (afterwards) it appeared that the guys were watched by the inventor of air guitar music...... Than, time for the SAS band, the main act of the evening. SAS stands for Spikeys All Stars that's a band in what spike Ednew is playing and always is there as well Jamie Moses. Further they often have the same players with them, artists that are more or less famous.. First of all we were introduced to Eric Singer on drums. Great drummer, who had the difficult task to follow up Cozy Powell in Brians' band on his last tour. The more or less permanent singer in the SAS band is Chris Thompson. He was the singer of Manfred Mann's' earth band, and the songs from that band were played for with a spirit, wow.. For the elder people a party of memories.. Blinded by the light, Davey's on the road again and and some more, my memories are a pain those days!!). Chris also introduced brians' babes, the backing vocals from Brians' band indeed, so we had more or less a reunion of the Brian may band.... Than Paul Young showed up, also a regular guest at the SAS gigs. He did sing his goodies like Stay for good and why don't you come back. He did also dance with the babes, and hmm, I think that many men in the audience were jealous for Paul being danced two sided, hahahaha! There was a small solo part for the babes themselves, they did do a little Abba gig what was very funny! Than Spike introduced a very unexpected guest to sing a song... Mr Bruce Dickinson was invited on stage and well, I became exciting, being a huge fan of the Iron Maiden I was really thrilled that Bruce should do a song... Hmmm... next lines I write down without any comments :):):) Bruce came on stage, in blue faded jeans with a black t shirt. Short hair.. the band started to play breakfree and Bruce started singing.. That voice.. woohaa.. shivversssss... Bruce read the words from a note, while he was rocking the audience socks off and as well using entire stage to fill with his energy.. Strange performance it was, but well, not bad, he HAS personality, though it is hard for die hard Queenies to understand that he didn't know the words.... Time for another break, for the sas guys to have their rest. But not for the audience, for we were surprised by the performance of Treana Morris. Treana did join Roger on his last tour, was needed for some female parts in the songs... She did play guitar, a bit out of the atmosphere of the night, we were all attracted so far with rock music and than the guitar/country sound of treana is something complete different, but still, nice to see her as well alive. She did a nice performance of 39 and later of Sleeping at the sidewalk, more or less like the unplugged version we know from Brian. Than it was again the SAS band playing, with Chris Thompson, well, one can say the oldies are still rocking.. And than the stage was changing rapidly...

Guitar sound
ROCK!!
BRIAN!!!

ROGER!!!

I heard the sound... And all we hear... There was roger singing.. Radio GaGa...

Hands in the air, heart in the sky... All we hear was (screaming audience...) What a bliss, WHAT an evening!!! Live on stage, Brian and Roger...

Shivers, thrilling, screaming girls, yelling audience.. What an artists! The sound of the grand old lady of Brian, the so familiar look of the curly haired.. And Roger, the gentleman himself, in his very black suit, what fitted so good with his glasses... Next song was Since you've been gone and left us in memories of the ones who died before their time.. Roger on drums, Brian on guitar, it was like the old times were living up again! Than an absolute highlight for me came on... Roger sang strange frontiers, one of the most fabulous solo songs ever, in my opinion..

Through the emotions I felt myself getting dizzy, oh my god, no, don't don't... I kept on telling myself you're NOT allowed to faint now, this IS history... but the room was turning around and the sound was so much overwhelming me, it was really the best that could ever came over me..

People say.. it won't never happen here.... These are the strange frontiers... His voice.. WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!

Roger still there, Brian coming up with the red special TIE YOUR MOTHER DOWN..

ROCKS! Those guys, in their mid fifties and not so slim and young as they used to be, but who carezzzzzzzz! They were awesome rocking all out!

Than Treana Morris came back on stage and she performed with Brian and roger Under pressure, well dear reader (heh), I cannot find words, it was so awesome to see them performing, it was wonderful, so familiar..
as if nothing has changed in the years... If you think I was rocked off the socks already, well, I was, but next song did do it definitely. No words... We saw history there, and I know that my friends around me were realizing that too.. Many tears around, a very emotional moment. I all the sudden had that feeling that we shall never see this again. First time after Queen that I saw Roger and Brian alive together on stage... ahhh... The audience was really touched and in heaven, all of us, for sure.. Than Roger announced the special song, never done alive and there they did it.. No one but you came out of the speakers and well, do I need to say words... Only the good die young..... It's such a tricky situation.... Cryin' for no no one...... No one but you... Brian could not finish the song and sat on stage in tears.. What do I need to say more? Freddie, we love you... A wonderful memorial we had.. I think that there were some more songs done, afterwards, but I cannot remember them very well anymore... I can truly say that it was one of the most memorial moments in my (still so young..) life.. Some things are history making, some things are immortal.. This day, Freddie etched a new picture in my soul And it could not have been done with the ones that do love Freddie so much.. Thank you so much my dear friends, for sharing
