The Red Deer Story

By Alicia Ferri

We were in Red Deer, Alberta for a a ringette tournment. Our coach was from Red Deer and he wanted to bring us to his town, not everyone could go, which was too bad...but anyways...I dont remember everything that happend. I do remember we took West Jet, and the flight was delayed 4 hours and we ended up sitting in the lobby till 10 pm and Brian ended up flirting with the 22 year old stewardess (he didnt know she was so young) and we had a game the next day at like 7 am. So we finally arrived in Edmonton, and our trucks that we rented had been taken!! I couldnt believe it, we had reserved it and they lent them out on us! What a stupid company so we ended up hanging out at the airport for an hour waiting for something to come in...it was 2 am Alberta time when we arrived in Red Deer at our hotel...we didnt get to sleep till at least 3 am...which sucked cuz we had like 3 hours sleep for our game (which ended up to be the best game of the tournment). We lost all our games, dont ask me the scores cuz I really dont remember...but we played Red Deer, Lethbridge and Edmonton maybe a 4th game against Calgary, I cant remember...All I remember was that it was really cold, and we had a party right before our game and our coach allowed it!! sigh...

Anyways, get to the point...we were playing Red Deer , Brian's old team...I told my teammates right before the game, if I score on a break a way, Im going to go crazy, they were like yeah right, they brushed it off...well, haha...this goalie apparently hadnt let in a goal for a very long time...she only let in 6 goals all year so far...Brian had taught me a move ...so I deked to the left, then right, then left, then I back handed it in...it went up and over the goalie...

Then I went crazy! I screamed so loud you could hear me in the stands, then I dropped my stick, went for a little skate then dove to the ice...haha, you had to see it, all my teammates thought I was nuts, they laughed and joked with me...it was like the highlight of the tournment! haha, I have a habit of going crazy during my games, I guess I like having fun, the score or winning really doesnt matter too much to me, just as long as I m with the team, and we are all together, thats what ringette is all about...its not about the refs calling bad games, or losing a game here and there...in the end , who really cares right? its all about memories, its all about togetherness....god Im feeling sappy tonight haha...

Well I wanted to thank Brian Bates for taking us on that cold trip to Alaska...opps I mean Alberta, that was a time I will never forget...thanks coach...hope you come back and coach again someday.

Her Li you forgot about the part when we were at Sutters....
