Rio Dulce is about a four-hour drive from the Capital City of Guatemala. If your are traveling from the Capital City be sure to stop in Quirigua and visit the largest stelaes from the Mayan world it is about thirty minutes from Rio Dulce. Rio Dulce is a town that depends on the river. When you get there you have to rent a boat to get around and take some sight seeing tours. It is well worth the expense. You can either rent a boat individually or ask your hotel to book you one with other people (if your on a tight budget this is cheaper). Rio Dulce is the place where most of the wealthy people from Guatemala own homes, boats and wave runners and visit it during the weekend. There are a variety of hotels priced from the backpacker to the tourist traveling on a larger budget. Rio Dulce and Lake Izabal are worth a long weekend to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
