This lyric is a result of something a young man once told me. He was serious about a young woman and wanted to propose, but he was very concerned that she would expect things he couldn't guarantee. I wondered how many other young men had such concerns about committment. I wrote this in remembrance of him. I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't also relate to thoughtful young women.

ON THE WAY

Baby - I believe, but I'm not 'Pollyanna'.
There's lots of things we've got to come to see !
Don't think, if you see patience in my manner,
that I'll lie down and let folks walk on me.

Baby, I believe Life has a meaning,
and there's a right and wrong way we can go.
I aim to find the right way, but I'm learning,
there's some everyday things we must know.

(Chorus)
On the Way - but the Way is hard to travel,
when someone steals the signposts, and the light.
You never know what promise may unravel !
You never know what's stalking in the night !

Baby - now, I know sometimes I'll stumble,
and I may need your patience if I fall.
With the best intentions, I may fumble,
and sometimes I may even drop the ball.

Baby - you should know how much I love you.
and you can know I want to love you right!
I'll try to stay in touch with the Light above us,
and I'll try to give temptation one good fight !

(Chorus)
On the Way-but the Way is hard to travel
when someone steals the signposts and the light.
You never know what promise may unravel.
You never know what's stalking in the night.

On the Way, Yes - on the Way together !
But-I won't tell you it's an easy course
We're gonna pass through many kinds of weather -
so it's got to be for better or for worse !
It's got to be for better or for worse...
