As an opener, Ann Durand’s main character, Karen Hudson came across in a state of ‘love’. As
a characterization portrait, it offers the reader an insight to her down to earth, simplistic style. Placing her as a third
grade teacher staples her character even further. We get to feel her world around her, the love that her students have for
her, her own match from heaven, Michael Browning (Aka: Borbeau) along with his daughter Jennifer. All this serenity purposely
done to dramatically intertwine the reader with the soon-to-be climatic turnabout that will seat you firmly in your chair
as the mystery begins.
Anyone who has been deeply in love will appreciate Ann’s portrayal of Karen as a woman who desperately wants,
needs, and does believe in her man when certain circumstances are thrust in her face. How would any woman react to a request
to believe in her man, no matter what she hears? Now add the factor that the love of her life and his daughter just up and
vanish one day, followed by the FBI informing her Michael is wanted for murder. This alone had me glued to the book. A Promise
to Keep keeps you on a roller coaster ride of intrigue, lots of turns and twists along the way.
Ann Durand’s visual capacity in her writing voice allows the reader to ride right along Karen, experiencing the
panoramic countryside viewing, learn about the Tarahumara Indians, every heart thumping fear and action, confrontations with
characters that need a good beating. Very rare do I get caught up in a fictional character as I did with Karen Hudson. If
you’re searching for a book containing a bit of suspense, mystery, and the almighty romantic aspect, then A Promise
To Keep is THE book I recommend to satisfy your taste buds.
Danielle Steele, watch out for Ann
Durand.
