I just lost George TOWNSEND my great uncle born 1846 ST Columb Cornwall &

5yo in 1851 census. Then whole family disappears until 1881 the women only

appear in London - gran (Caroline) now married to Tom LANKSHEAR and

greatgran (Mary TOWNSEND) a widow now was living with them. So where was

great uncle. Kate TOWNSEND 14 was a "visitor" with the LANKSHEARs on Census

night so quick conclusion must be George's daughter.

Then a couple of SKS find George TOWNSEND in 1881 in Southwark London which

proves everything. Obviously George senior died between 1851 and 1881 and

whole family moved to London and so gran found pops - But census George was

born Bodmin and wife born St Columb both age 40 - Ah wife St Columb so

enumerator did not understand Cornish and reversed places of birth and was

lazy on age which should be 35.

Just then Hugh brings up his new IGI site. SO I click on Bodmin and of

course there is baptism of another George TOWNSEND in 1840 and he was 40 in

1881, So Census George is not mine.

So

1. What happened to George senior between 1851 and 1881

2. And George junior - must still be alive or was in 1871 as

3. Who else is Kate - just a visitor - or as a TOWNSEND must/should/might be

related

They were not on 1871 census Cornwall - its free on MyTrees so they must be

in 1871 somewhere and 1861 but not Cornwall so far as CRO have nearly

finished index.

So if anyone sees TOWNSEND in 1871 or 1861 presumably in London - East

please shout - Caroline with Mary and George and a Kate 4 in 1871

I’ll keep checking FreeBMD in case someone transcribes the missing bit. And wade through 30

years of St Cath's. That could be 120 fiche
