Our goal is to meet at least once a month. Ideally....twice a month on weekends during the
winter. Last year, the club went rock climbing, skating, bowling, Detroit Institute of Arts, and
movies. So there's plenty of things to do and see. Stay active and get involved.
The Dock and Water Side
The LaSalle Rowing Club Newsletter: Volume 9As many members may now be aware, our coach boats and motors have
gone missing! The thefts were reported to the police by Kristen Kolar et
al of the competitive rowing crew.
Thanks to the diligence of Glenn White, arrangements
are being made for the purchase of a new boat and motor so that rowing
may resume. We’ll keep you informed!
Meanwhile, more boats and motors will be purchased as soon as
insurance money comes available. A claim is in the offing and,
hopefully, this whole episode will result in only a minor setback to the club,
and to fall rowing activities!
The theft was certainly a baptism by fire for the new board which
consists of returning members: Debbie Schoger, Rex Olaviaga, Kevin
Nyman, Mary Wilbur and Lisa Antaya; as well as new members Graciella Stokes
and Laurie Walesiak. Welcome to the board! Good luck, and good things
for the new season. May the club prosper and grow.
As the result of a bylaw change at the annual general meeting,
new members will remain for a minimum of two years, and up to half of the
executive will be elected in any given year. It was felt that this
would provide a degree of continuity by experienced board members who would
assist and guide the new board members.
Once again, your board is committed to a series of fun winter
activities (one a month) to bring club members closer together and
keep them in touch in the off-season. The board will also try to boost
membership and establish proper rowing crews in the next season.
Fifteen members showed up for the annual meeting and the board hopes to
increase participation in the club, especially within the ranks of the
Learn-To-Rows.
Speaking of activities, stay tuned for the annual end-of-season
clean-up of the boat house. Details and times will be announced and
volunteers will be needed to do the work. The more hands involved,
the easier and faster the work.
A small engine maintenance course is also in the works for
January. It will be sponsored by the Windsor Power and Sail Squadron at a cost
of under $100.00 per person. Anyone interested should contact former
director: Herb Colling A.S.A.P. (728-1579)
A plan is also afoot to host the Dragon Boat Race from the
LaSalle Rowing Club facilities next year in conjunction with the Windsor Power
and Sail Squadron. There will be a beer tent and a need for volunteers to
help organize land activities and operate coach boats. Again, anyone
interested should contact Herb Colling.
In the meantime, the executive is also setting up a committee to
ensure the future of the club, possibly in a new location with a new
boat house and, certainly, by establishing a slush fund to cover future
capital expenses like: trucks, boats, motors, docks and facilities.
Rex Olaviaga reports that the club is in the black for this year.
There’s about $3,000 in the general account, about $2,000 in the
futures or equipment fund, and over $19,000 in the various bingo accounts. It
sounds like a great deal of cash, but the club is high maintenance,
especially now, given the uncertainty of our coach boats.
The club executive has committed to purchasing up to three coach
boats and motors, at least one lightweight shell, and has an urge to buy an
erg or two.
Last, but not least, congratulations to Kathy O’Brien (retiring
board member who will remain active in the club behind the scenes), Cathy
Ruggirello (long-standing member and organizer of our club regattas),
and Herb Colling. These three members are winner/recipients of this
year’s George Pocock Millennium Award for outstanding members of the year. The Dock and Water Side

This is your personal, hand-engraved, embossed, golden invitation to:
"Stroke For Stroke"
during the
Annual Rumrunner Regatta
Saturday, July 22, 2000
All club members are invited for formal and informal races, no prior racing
experience necessary. It’s going to be a fun day of comaraderie at the boat
house with an opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause. And, if that
isn’t enough, invite your friends to watch and cheer you on from Gil Maur
Park. The 500 k races will cruise right past our channel entrance and dock area. There are sign up sheets in the boat house. And, for more info, just ask Glenn,
Kristen or Cathy Rugirello.New This Year: This is also a major fund raiser for The Heart And Stroke
Foundation. Pledge sheets are available in the boathouse and, to ensure full
participation, we would ask that you make, or raise, at least a minimum donation of
$15.00 to ensure the success of this venture. As a further incentive, The Heart and
Stroke Foundation is also offering bonus incentives (prizes) for significant amounts
of money raised. Check it out. It won’t happen without your support! It gets better. As an extra inducement, Kristen Kolar has graciously opened her
home to LaSalle Rowers for her annual party: The Kolar Kegger, (Glenn’s
influence) at 4:00 p.m., 2855 Bouffard St. LaSalle. BYOB and food to share. A BBQ
is available. Bring bathing suits for the pool and look forward to volleyball, a bonfire,
and shuffleboard. Bring your frisbees, baseballs and gloves, soccer and footballs,
insect repellant and be prepared to have a good time. See you there!

Throughout the month of May, club volunteers have been busy instructing several junior and
regular learn to row crews. They’re now in the throes of graduating and are looking
forward to spending the rest of their summer on the water, honing their skills and meeting the
rest of the LaSalle Rowing Club crews, so your executive hopes that you will make them
welcome and will make them feel at home. We also hope that you will help them along and
take them under your wing and into your crews. They’re the future of our club, after
all.We have some more good news this season: we’re no longer rowing in a construction
zone. The town of LaSalle has spruced up the entire area around our rowing club, so
you’ll hardly recognize it if you haven’t been out yet this year. We’ve
also been doing some minor repairs and maintenance and, while the docks need work, the
rest of the club is looking pretty swish. Now, down to business, if you’re interested in recreational rowing, contact Herb
Colling 728-1579. He’s trying to arrange schedules: Monday, Wednesdays and
Saturdays; or Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. If you have a four, would be willing to
coach boat or would like to try any other combination, then give Herb a call.Kathy O’Brien is the director in charge of the Learn-to-Row program. If you have
some new recruits, then give her a call. There are openings available. Just call: 253-8537 or
email her at: kobrien@curtisjk.com.Of course, dues are due. If you want to row, we would ask that your dues be paid first.
Yearly membership dues are 150 dollars, competitive and recreational seasonal is 160
dollars, highschool competitive and recreational. Check with Kathy for the learn to row rates. We have some sad news to report. We’re losing Laura McCaffrey. For some reason,
she’s decided to move away to Ottawa and is leaving by Thursday of next week.
Laura has been club secretary for the past year and has spent her time organizing the rest of
the executive, doing up agendas, writing minutes and making sure we live up to all those
things we talk about during executive meetings. Her contributions have been great and she
will be sorely missed. We had a small get-together for her recently at The Honest Lawyer (if
there is such a thing) and we are looking for a replacement. (Big shoes to fill.) If
you’re interested, or think you might know someone to take on the challenge, let your
executive members know. The club has been purchasing many things this spring with the bingo money from the sale of
our property in Malden and we have more things to buy. We have established a wish-list on
the club bulletin board and, if there’s anything that you’d like to see purchased
by the club, then, by all means, mention it on the list and we’ll vote on it.If there is anything that you’d like to see happen at the club, or anything that
you’d like to address, then please tell an executive member so that it can become a
reality. The club has also arranged a fund raiser with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for July. It will
coincide with our regular regatta. Pledge sheets are available at the clubhouse and, for more
information, just call Herb Colling. Your executive would like to see every member of the
club involved in the fund raiser so that we can return large chunks of cash to a worthy cause.
Lets see all of the boats in our inventory on the water on that day.

Yes. It’s that time of year again! Rowing season is starting. The boats are on the
water and the stalwarts are already showing up for weeknight, morning and weekend rows.
(Usually 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday is a good place to start to organize your crew and
find out what is going on.) There are sign-up sheets in the boathouse for rowing and coach
boating.Of course, there is a down-side to the start of the season. Your dues are due. $310.00 for
competitive and recreational and $250.00 for highschool. Bring your cheque book, as dues
must be paid before you’re allowed on the water. Make Treasurer Rex a happy
oarsman by ending his unpaid dues blues.Remember the motto:
You won’t row, if you don’t show.
If you have a crew with whom you’d like to row, take the initiative and organize them,
decide when you want to go out and check with your executive to make sure coach boats
are available.Over the past few weeks, your executive has been bowling for Big Brothers, and has held an
open house at the boathouse with hot dogs, veggies, junk food, hamburgers and pop with 30
to 40 members in attendance. The club also held a general meeting with 20 members showing
up and sticking around to rig boats, install shoes and buoy up the dock. Thanks to Ted,
Laurie and Mary for the latter job. Meanwhile, the town of LaSalle assures us that the ramp
will be done... soon! Thanks to Kevin Nyman, the boathouse is in top-top shape with all the boats stored neatly
away. He invoked his engineering talents and found space for two of our fours. We will have
to be extra-careful moving boats in and out, however, so keep that in mind when you get
ready to "take the weight."By the way, when you enter the boathouse, look up. The better half of the Pocock has been
saved and now holds a place of honour in the rafters.By the time you read this, club president Debbie Schoger and John Brauss will have
purchased a new truck on the club’s behalf. Bingo funds were used and this should
help reduce our annual expenses. In the Junior Rowing Program, 3 eights will be on the water, starting May 8th. They inlcude
one team from Maryvale and one from General Amherst, coached by Shane Berger, Sara
Vanstone, Kristen Kolar, Christine Kollar and Cathy Rugirello. Ted Poppel is coaching a
four from the Windsor Regional Cancer Clinic and there are several regular LTR programs
starting in May and June, as well. All of the above says something about volunteers from the membership who make things
happen! Join in and make this your best season of rowing ever!
The LaSalle Rowing Club Newsletter
Vol 5
So much is happening with the club this spring, it's hard to know where
to begin.
The house is sold. $82,000 dollars was returned to the bingo account.
Bernie Ziff
and Deb Schoger got our entire fleet refurbished at Hudson's boatworks
in London.
It looks like new! We've purchased three new '8's, and a couple of
smaller boats,
and a whole bunch of oars, with more purchases to come. It means
crowded conditions
in the boat house, but we hope to rectify that problem soon. We're
also buying the
truck for a considerable saving of yearly fees to the club. The lease
comes due
in April. The Town of LaSalle has moved our docks and is in the process
of building
a new ramp with access to deeper water. Our dock is even being extended
by 20 feet
with another section provided by LaSalle. This is all great news!
Thanks again to Bernie for securing a donation of steel for the dock project.
Andrzej
has also had the shoes repaired for four of our boats over the winter at
nominal
cost to the club. Once again, these are both reminders that, without
these volunteer
efforts, things would not be happening.
IF YOU DON'T SHOW, YOU WON'T ROW
Make this your motto this year. Some members have complained that
they didn't get
to row last year because they weren't assigned to a team or their team
didn't always
show up. This year, if you want to row, come to the boat house.
We will have regular
crews, but we will also make room for anyone who makes an effort.
Kathy O'Brien
wasn't assigned to a crew last fall and she rowed as much, if not more,
than anyone.
She simply made the effort and came to the boat house when she knew rowing
was going
to happen.
Learn to Row and Junior Rowing Programs are in the works this year.
And there will
be an open house at the boat house with refreshments, hot dogs and burgers
to kick
off the season. It will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April
16th. We'll have
some fun and outline the rowing season at that time. Come out and
fit in.
It's hoped that the club will attend more regattas this year and develop
a closer
liason with the American boat clubs in this area. Already, your executive
has made
overtures to that effect, so it could be an active season for those who
are willing
to participate.
We've also agreed to hold a couple of fund-raising events with our major
sponsor:
The Heart and Stroke Foundation... Maybe a couple of pledge drives for
distance
around the islands and an erg session in the winter. We'll have sign-up
sheets in
the boat house with details to be announced. We might even call it:
Stroke For
Stroke. If you have an idea for a name, let us know. It's all
in an effort to make
the club more socially responsible and contribute to a good cause, share
some of
our good fortune this year.
We're looking forward to a great season and we hope you will continue to
be part
of it. Support your club. Pay your dues. Volunteer.
And we'll see you on the
water!

Great news! Your club is smoking. First, socially... a small group of skaters
hit
the ice at Adie Knox Arena in January, and we’re planning a skiing party
in February.
For details see Debbie Schoger, Kathy O’Brien, Glenn White or Rex Olaviaga.
It’s
an effort to keep us active throughout the winter. So, if you’re not involved,
now
is your chance.
 y in February.
For details see Debbie Schoger, Kathy O’Brien, Glenn White or Rex Olaviaga.
It’s
an effort to keep us active throughout the winter. So, if you’re not involved,
now
is your chance.
The club also met with Diane Sibley who represents the bingo licensing
people. And
she has given us the go-ahead to buy boats, coach boats, motors, life jackets,
oars,
even a truck. We are thinking of three more eights, another four, a single
and a
couple of coach boats. If you have a suggestion, contact your executive.
If you know
of a good used, late model truck that can pull our trailor, give us a call.
By the
end of February, we’ll have bingo money to spend.
Diane Sibley was impressed by the new programs we’re planning this year.
The most
ambitious is the Corporate Rowing Challenge. Organized by Diane Ziff, and
a very
devoted group, your club will teach company employees how to row and then
have a
regatta to celebrate their success. We’re looking for 16 teams of ten people
who
want to get involved for a small fee of $2,000 dollars, $200 dollars per
person.
There will be parties and freebies by sponsors, (If you know of potential
donors,
let us know.) and all sorts of things going on.
Diane has arranged for an Olympic calibre, and champion, coach to train
us (You should
see his Olympic Gold Medal from 1984!) The challenge will run in June,
culminating
in a regatta on July 8th. We will need lots of help, so don’t be shy.
Already, Sarah Vanstone and Herb Colling have made a presentation to LaSalle
Town
Council to ask for new docks, dredging, and water for the boathouse, and
Diane and
Bernie have met with the LaSalle recreation committee. So, it looks as
if it is going
to happen.
Club president, Debbie Schoger, is recruiting sponsors and making sure
we’re busy.
A Junior Rowing Program is in the works for May. We’ve approached Maryvale,
Big Brothers
and Sisters, some teen help centres and high schools to boost our young
membership,
in keeping with our mandate as a non-profit organization. If you’d like
to coach
or coach boat, let Herb or Sarah know ASAP. We’ll make up the schedules
and we could
use your help.
By the time you read this, Bernie will have taken several of our wooden
boats to
London for much-needed repairs. It’s the start of an over-haul for the
entire fleet,
before the new boats come in.
We also have plans to expand the boat house and add temporary storage.
Anyone with
construction, engineering and design capabilities, see Bernie.
By the way, Andrzej Czajkowski deserves a pat on the back. He saved us
a bundle by
getting eight pairs of shoes fixed. He organized this little project himself
and
just did it. That’s the kind of committment we like to see from our members!
When you swish upon a car... You can travel really far...
Makes no difference who you are... Your dreams come true!

Your club executive wishes you a very Merry Christmas, pleasant holiday
and Happy
New Year! We have what we think is a wonderful Christmas present for you
this year....
We’ve sold the house at 9265 Malden Road. The deal closes on February 29th
and we’ll
be returning at least 82 thousand dollars to the club bingo account. This
will end
a bitter battle that has been going on since 1996, a low point in the club’s
history.
Now that it’s over, we’re onward and upward to establish a good reputation
for our
club.
Your club executive has great plans for the year 2000 and the next millennium.
Eight
members are becoming coaches, so they can develop a junior rowing program
this summer
with the prospect of buying more boats with our new-found windfall. A meeting
will
be held with Diane Sibley, of the gaming commission, early in the New Year
to tour
our boathouse and to discuss the possibilities. The new coaches will also
produce
an aggressive campaign for the learn-to-row program to bring in new members
and much-needed
revenue.
A corporate challenge is also being planned with sponsors and competitions
coming
from local businesses and industry to bolster the club’s status in the

Diane Ziff is coordinating this effort and is looking for volunteers. It’s
an ambitious
slate of activities that will include parties, lessons, a regatta, and
barbeque for
the participants. We’ll need coach boat drivers and people to train and
oversee them,
we’ll need maintenance types to fix rudders and maintain seats and riggers,
volunteers
to help make barbeques and parties happen, handy types who can add storage
space
and extra dock space to our facilities, and support people for learn-to-row
and the
junior rowing program.
ASK NOT WHAT YOUR CLUB CAN DO FOR YOU...
2000 promises to be a busy but, we hope, productive and rewarding year.
The officers
of your club continue to hold weekly meetings and have been trying to bring
all of
the members together over the winter by being socially active. On Sunday,
November
14th, 18 members turned out for rock climbing at the Gibralter Climbing
Gym, followed
by lunch at the Michigan Tavern. A similar, but smaller group went for
pizza and
bowling at Bowlero Bowl on Monday, December 20th. In both cases, a good
time was
had by all. For January, there are tentative plans to go skating with a
similar excursion
anticipated for each month until we are back on the water. We look forward
to seeing
you there.
If you have a winter activity, would like to host a party, or have a suggestion
that
you’d like to share... your club executive is all ears. We are also trying
to set
up an e-mail directory for this newsletter. So make sure we have your address.
Give
your directors a call:
On behalf of Debbie Schoger, Rex Olaviaga, Laura McCaffrey, Cathy O’Brien,
Kevin
Nyman, Glenn White and Herb Colling. Ably assisted by Diane and Kristen,
we would
like to wish you and yours all the best in this most auspicious of New
Years!

The Dock and Water Side
The LaSalle Rowing Club Newsletter
The sale of the house is going slowly, but it is progressing. The club
is obtaining
a deed and mortgage details and has been in touch with the original lawyer
who handled
the original transaction. A letter has also been sent to the Registrar,
legal and
local office of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission. The club is expecting
a response
soon which will provide us with a course of action.
The club has also found out some interesting financial information about
the house
and full details will be discussed at a general meeting. It will take place
at 9:00
a.m. on Saturday, October 30th, at the boat house. Wear old clothes because,
following
the meeting, there will be a clean up to put everything away for the season.
The
riggers have to be removed from the boats, the life jackets cleaned, and
the coach
boats stored, so many hands are required to make the work go smoothly and
quickly.
This is an all day event.
The club is also planning a Christmas Party on November 14th, so put this
date on
your calendar. It will be a dinner with the location to be announced. So,
stay tuned.
It’s hoped that everyone will show up for some Christmas cheer and some
news about
club activities to keep us all together and in touch over the winter.
TO ERG IS HUMAN, TO FOUR DIVINE
The club has also resolved to paint the blades and spruce up the club logos
on the
boathouse. Over the next week or so, we will be approaching several schools
in the
hopes that they will adopt the project as part of their art classes. This
would be
a great benefit to the club.
In the meantime, thanks to Debbie Schoger, our president, for handing out
over 200
club flyers to prospective rowers at the RiverWalk on Saturday, October
2nd. A small
band of eight members, mostly executive, turned out in LaSalle’s colours
to make
our presence known on the riverfront. The photocos. It’s an ambitious

Good job
by all involved!
By the way, just a mention about Cathy. She can often be found weeding
the garden
or doing odd jobs around the boathouse. It’s that kind of committment by
individual
members which keeps the club alive. If you have a pet project that you’d
like to
take on, or if you’d like to volunteer, then contact one of the club directors:
Debbie
Schoger, Rex Olaviaga, Cathy O’Brien, Kevin Nyman, Laura McCaffrey, Mike
Lussier,
Glenn White and Herb Colling.
To generate more income for the club, the executive is planning a major
fund-raising
campaign. A letter is being drafted and will eventually be sent to area
businesses
in the hopes that they might sponsor our boats with their own corporate
logo. If
sufficient funds can be raised, we may be able to purchase more boats and
oars. Already,
the club is looking into the purchase of a single for competitive use by
Kevin, one
of our highschool rowers. A row-a-thon is also being planned for the Devonshire
Mall,
immediately after Christmas, to raise funds and promote the club. Again,
volunteers
are welcome.
Finally, a coaching clinic is being proposed for November. Contact Deb for particulars.

The Dock and Water Side
The LaSalle Rowing Club Newsletter
The LaSalle Rowing Club has a new executive in Rex Olaviaga, Debbie Schoger,
Kevin
Nyman, Laura McCaffrey, Cathy O’Brien, Mike Lussier and Herb Colling. Ably
assisted
by Glenn and Kristen, we should have a vibrant year in store. We’d like
to thank
the previous board for keeping our group active, and hope we can follow
their lead.
That’s why we’ve started this newsletter (hopefully monthly) to keep members
up to
date about their club and its activities, some of which will be held during
the winter.
By the time you read this, much-needed improvements to the dock should
be underway
or completed. A small group of club members devoted their Saturday (September
11th)
and volunteered to shore up the dock with air drums. It’s the kind of committment
and initiative welcomed and needed in the club. Good job!
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to set up another Learn To Row for the
fall season.
Debbie is coordinating the work and Kevin, as our student rep, is planning
to boost
our student membership at Assumption, Sandwich and, perhaps, Villanova.
Any help
or advice you can provide would be welcome. If you know of anyone who would
be interested
in learning to row, contact Debbie immediately.
Just a reminder, fall dues are now due. They’re payable to the club:
$45.00 Recreactional $25.00 Highschool Recreational
$60.00 Competitive $35.00 Highschool Competitive
Of course, our season is finished by the end of October and, in early November,
a
boat house clean-up and inventory will be held to check for any repairs
that need
doing, to get ready for rowing by spring. Again, any suggestions and help
would be
appreciated. If you have a concern, make it known to the executive at that
time.
A personal initiative by Andrzeg should be applauded. He’s taken it upon
himself
to seek repairs for the shoes in our boats at a nominal cost ($20.00 a
pair) to our
club. He saw a problem, and his inspiration reminds us of the adage: Ask
not what
your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club!
The club is currently involved in two major financial dealings that will
help generate
some new revenue and cut expenses. One, concerns the sale of a house owned
by the
club through the misappropriation of bingo money by some former members.
Mike Lussier
is on top of this one, and is looking for a real estate agent and lawyer
to handle
the sale. He’s also checking the club’s legal requirements. But it’s hoped
the sale
will generate a few thousand dollars which can then be used for boats or
equipment.
The club also rents a truck, a lease that expires in the spring. It’s hoped
that
the club will save a substantial amount of money by not renewing that lease.
It’s
also hoped that some alternative means of transportation can be found to
ship our
scullers to regattas.
If you have any suggestions, please feel free to write them down and present
them
to one of your executive members. Your executive will be meeting weekly
over the
next few months. The next meeting is Monday, September 13th. This is your
club. Make
the best of it!
