Jack & Mary:

A FINAL FAREWELL

by Michael Denis

Viewers who remember Kate Mulgrew's special magic as Mary Ryan for two and a half years on Ryan's Hope, had the rare pleasure of seeing her repeat her role in a series of guest shots this past fall. "It was strange, coming home again," says Kate of her return after four years' absence. "I came back in Jack's conscience. I gave him permission to let go of me and the courage to go on with his life."

This was the final paring--the end to a love story that had enthralled fans and ended tragically when the Mob murdered Mary, a news reporter who knew too much.

In Kate's real life, there was the joy of her marriage to stage director Robert Egan last July 31 [1982] in her hometown of Dubuque, Iowa. there was also the thrill of re-uniting with her R. H. pals Mike Levin (Jack) and Nancy Addison (Jill). Recalling her early days on the show, Kate muses, "We were all young kids then. It was exciting!"

And it was exciting to see her again in her well-loved role.
