QUALITY, ACCURACY, DEPENDABILITY, VERSATILITY. The Steyr AUG was developed by the Austrian Office of Military Technology under a project headed by Colonel Walter Stoll. By the end of the 1960's it was apparent that the international trend in military small arms was moving toward lighter and more compact rifles. NATO's 5.56x45mm cartridge was chosen as a proven performer in combat and Britain's EM-2 bullpup configuration was picked for compactness and ease of handling. Interchangable barrels were specified to provide a submachine gun, carbine, assault rifle, sniper rifle and light support weapons in a basic bullpup system. Austrian military trials then compared the AUG with the FN FAL (Austrian Stg 58 in 7.62mm NATO), the Czech Vz58 in 7.62x39 ComBloc, and the 5.56mm NATO FN CAL and Colt M16A1. The AUG proved to be at least as reliable as any of its competitors. It also proved to be superior in accuracy potential, target acquisition, handling characteristics, and full-auto fire controllability. In short, the AUG proved to be a winner. Now in service with the Austrian Federal Army for more than eight years, the AUG has also been adopted by Saudi Arabia, Oman, Tunisia, Malaysia, Djibouti, and Morocco. It is also used by the U.S Navy Seals, the British SAS, and the Cambridge (England) police. Australia is currently conducting comparison trials in an attempt to decide on the AUG or the American M16A2 for their troops. Austria's proven bullpup has also garnered some endorsement from the guys in black hats. Columbian M-19 Marxist rebels have also obtained a number of AUGs from Tunisia via Libya. Steyr's AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr), is a space-age assault rifle with many appealing features. Based on the bullpup design, the AUG is chambered for the 5.56 NATO cartridge. The AUG is an ambidextrous rifle as the bolt is replaceable and the ejection port may be moved to either side of the receiver. Even the carrying strap swivels may be repositioned for convenient port-side carry. The AUG functions in a gas-operated, semi-automatic firing mode (in selective-fire configuration, it is the standard arm of the Austrian army).
augonduty A gas-pressure adaptor has a shut-off valve located on the barrel with two settings-for firing under normal or adverse conditions. This high-tech assault rifle employs a unique 30-round, lightweight magazine made of transparent plastic which leaves no doubt as to the number of rounds one has left. The one-piece, greenish-colored stock is made of a durable plastic and houses the receiver group, hammer mechanism and magazine well. The pistol grip is integral with the stock, and a cross-bolt safety that locks the trigger is conveniently located just above the "rest" position of the shooter's right thumb. Three interchangeable barrel lengths are available-a 20-inch tube is standard while 16 and 24-inchers are optional. The cold hammer-forged barrel is chrome-lined and locks into the receiver by rotating it 1/8th turn. The forward positioned folding pistol grip is utilized to provide a handle to remove hot barrels which may be plunged into water for immediate cooling without suffering any consequences. A flash hider is attached to the muzzle.
aug16.jpg What appears to be a top-mounted carrying handle doubles as a 1.5X scope that has full windage and elevation adjustments. The AUG quickly and easily breaks down into six basic component parts groups. With the switch toward a heavier 5.56mm bullet, the AUG is ready with a barrel which has six lands and grooves and a right-hand twist with one turn in nine inches, which better stabilizes the heavier projectile. The lighter bullet - 55 grains - is better suited to a one in 14. The AUG is futuristic in both design and concept. It seems to have solved many of the inherent problems with assault rifles, mainly overall size and weight. With the 20-inch barrel snugged into place, the AUG measures a compact 31 inches long and weighs just a shade under eight pounds...Just a few reasons why the Steyr AUG family of weapons are perfectly suited to the special weapons needs of today's law enforcement community. The Steyr AUG weapon system is an example of modern manufacturing technology, the use of state-of-the-art materials, and forward thinking design innovations. Since the time of its introduction, the Steyr AUG has been the answer to a need for a modern, ergonomic, durable and accurate combat rifle. First fielded with the Austrian Army, the AUG in its various forms has been adopted by over 18 countries for use in their militaries and special forces units. Additionally the AUG has seen use in countless numbers of law enforcement agencies worldwide.
aug_sniper SHORT OVERALL LENGTH The Steyr AUG is designed on a "Bullpup " principal which makes it 25% shorter than other rifles with similar barrel lengths without compromising ballistic performance. The bullpup design does away with the folding stock feature found on many weapon types, allowing the AUG to be instantantly available for accurate shoulder firing. A shorter overall length means unmatched maneuverability which gives the user faster target engagement and allows the AUG to be easily maneuvered through small spaces such as a patrol car, SWAT vehicles, and APCS. Additionally the shorter overall length gives the user a decisive advantage when close quarter environments are encountered. The Bullpup design also allows a longer barrel length thus enhancing accuracy and increasing the terminal velocities of the ammunition. Therefore the AUG has an advantage over conventional weapons which depend on a shorter barrel to decrease the overall length of the weapon. INTEGRAL OPTICAL SIGHT The Steyr AUG comes standard with a 1.5x optical sight which is built-in to the receiver and is fully protected from damage by the aluminum receiver housing. Additionally, the optic is sealed in its housing and is waterproof to a depth of 30 feet. The optical sight housing also acts as a carrying handle for the weapon. The use of the optical sight has been proven to increase hit probability and decrease target acquisition time (spotting and identifying the target) and engagement time (the decision to fire and put a round on target). Target acquisition and engagement time with the AUG optical sight has been estimated at 1.5 seconds (where only two points are aligned) versus the conventional open sight at 3 seconds (where three points must be aligned). Target acquisition time is decreased by one-half which means the user is faster and therefore has a decisive advantage in the field. In low light or night environments optical sights have proven far better than conventional sights, and target acquisition is possible for the AUG long after the ability to use a conventional open sight has passed. The 1.5x magnification of the AUG optical sight allows the user to fire the weapon with both eyes open eliminating the worry of losing peripheral vision and developing "tunnel vision" while sighting through the optic. Additionally, the optical sight on the AUG decreases training time for the user - thus greatly reducing ammunition and training costs.
augtree ERGONOMIC DESIGN When the Steyr AUG was designed, special attention was paid to the shape of the weapon and how it would interact with the human user. The end result is a perfectly balanced and human engineered weapon. The AUG's center of balance is directly centered at the pistol grip allowing it to be operated with one hand if necessary as opposed to other weapon types which tend to be front heavy and cumbersome. Additionally, the safety mechanism is operated by the thumb and index finger and is fully ambidextrous, allowing it to be manipulated at will. This gives the AUG an advantage, as the safety may always be in the "on" position; at the moment the user has acquired a target and is ready to fire, the safety can be deactivated, the weapon fired, and the safety reactivated without any noticeable loss in target engagement time. The left handed person was also kept in mind, as the AUG can easily be adapted in seconds for left handed users with the installation of a left hand bolt assembly. The user does not have to think about looking for a fire selector on the AUG. Modes of fire are selected by the AUG's two stage trigger, short pulls of the trigger provide single shots and a long pull to the rear provides full auto or burst fire. Additionally the AUG selective fire rifles can be equipped to fire semi-auto only by the installation of a semi-auto hammer group. DEPENDABILITY The Steyr AUG has been designed to be the most durable and dependable weapon available today. More than 23 components of the AUG system including the stock, magazine and hammer mechanism are made of high-impact, extremely-rigid, synthetic material . These parts are friction resistant and need no lubrication to operate, giving them a very long life cycle. The receiver is made of a precision cast and machined high strength alloy which is corrosion resistant and easy to maintain. This receiver encloses a cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel with a minimum service life of 15,000 rounds. The AUG is easily disassembled to major components without tools, and most parts require no fitting. This decreases basic maintenance cost, as armory training is very simple. VERSATILITY The AUG weapon system is completely modular. All components, including barrels, receivers, and spare parts are completely interchangeable from weapon to weapon. This is an advantage, as with the addition of special equipment and accessories, a single AUG can be tailored to suit a wide variety of operational requirements. Using a "building block" principal, the user can configure the AUG in any of its various forms. THE STEYR AUG, AN OBVIOUS CHOICE No other weapon system available offers quality, dependability, versatility, firepower, accuracy and ergonomic design in a package as compact as that of the AUG. These advantages of the Steyr AUG render it the obvious choice of law enforcement professionals.
aughbar * Caliber 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) * Barrel length 508mm (20 inches) * Barrel twist Right-hand twist of one turn in 9 inches * Chamber and Barrel Chrome plated * Overall Length 790mm (31 inches) * Height 275mm (11 inches) * Weight of Weapon Without Magazine 3.6kg (7.9 pounds) O.K. You can still get one. The AUG. rifle was imported into the good old U.S.A. for quite some time , but that all changed back in 1986 when then president Bush passed the assault Weapons Ban Bill. AUG's were expensive enough ( going for $1000 - $1500 dollars). But when the ban came into effect the small quantify of AUG's that were in the states fetched a premium price. Now a pre ban semi auto AUG. in mint condition can command a price upwards of $5000.00 That's a little to high considering you can purchase other pre ban weapons of comparable quality and reliability for $800 - $1000. Well all that almost change when Steyr introduced the AUG. "USR" rifle. Basically it is the famous AUG. but with a thumb hole stock.

usr_aug ( notice right in back of the pistol grip , there is plastic going up to the frame of the firearm , hence the thumb hole ) That is how you can tell that's is a post ban rifle. It's basically the same. These rifles were going for $1800 - $2000 new. These rifles were imported into the county until the president signed an executive order as of april 1998 stopping all importation of the so called post ban rifles , including the AUG. USR. That started the prices rising again for the post ban USR"s. These rifles are going from $2300 to what ever you are willing to pay. Very few were imported to the US to start , so if you see an AUG. for a great price ( you can hope ) pick one up. I have not personally fired the AUG. family of rifles , but what i had heard from many people is that the AUG. is a very reliably rifle.I had a chance to purchase a pre ban AUG back in 90 for the sum of $1300.00 with six mag"s in mint condition. If i can only go back in time!!!!!!!! Please E Mail me with any likes and dislikes of the AUG family of rifles
