Duty Log - Controller Hedin

Today there was only one temporal anomaly detected in Mutter's Spiral. Closer observation deduced that a type 40 TT Capsule was involved. A check of all registered or broken up type 40's indicates all accounted for except one. Under article 9 of the Gallifreyan code of justice all further reports are to be treated as top secret.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE LORD CASTELLAN

It has come to my attention that the renegade Time Lord known as the Doctor has once again started his meddling activities in the affairs of the planet Earth. It is my recommendation that we limit his travels back into Earth's past while he is still needed in Earth's present to deal with a small number of remaining threats.

From President Dahreminemalinium to Cardinal Gothaviandahman (eyes only)

This mission is top secret. You are to take an unregistered type 73 TT Capsule to the planet Earth where you will monitor and observe the activities of a renegade Time Lord known as the Doctor. You will not interfere in his activities, only record and report his affairs and the affairs of his travelling companions, a Ms Sarah Jane Smith and a Mr Jeremy Victor Fitzoliver.

Log entry Doctor-1

Early attempts to locate the Doctor have proved difficult. I arrived at the scene where the Doctor had departed from to obtain a reference for the time path curve his ship was following. Attached is a transcript obtained from two human military officers. I have programmed my recording device to replay these logs in hologramatic mode.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart looked sharply at his second in command. "Well where the blue blazes has he gone this time Captain Yates?"

Captain Yates shook his head. "I've no idea sir. He just said 'see you yesterday Mike' then he popped into the TARDIS and it vanished sir."

"Typical, absolutely typical."

"Do you want me to stay here until they return sir? Only my shift ends in half an hour."

"You get off if you like Captain; I'll call you if I need you."

"Very good sir."

Captain Yates was observed leaving the UNIT HQ and travelled to the residence of a person known as Charles Grover. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart waited inside the Doctor's laboratory for another ten minutes before returning to his office.

Having now correctly identified the curve of the Doctor's time path I will follow this renegade back into Earth's past where I shall further continue my observation of the reprobate and his accomplices.

Log entry Doctor-2

Having traced the Doctor's journey back into the planet Earth's past I have arrived in a country called Germany in the Earth year 1936.

The locals are unaware of my presence as I am using an invisibility shroud to maintain absolute secrecy.

There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm about a sporting event being held nearby in this centre of dwellings, referred to by the natives as Berlin.

Further investigation of this event reveals it to be known as the Olympiad or more colloquially as The Olympic Games.

It is possible that the Doctor has brought his two travelling companions back in time to witness these feats of sporting strength and endurance.

Have just spotted one of the Doctor's accomplices, Mr Fitzoliver, leaving a place where the vending of consumable food items takes place. He has a bag of oranges. I will follow and observe.

Jeremy Fitzoliver walked through the streets of Berlin clutching a bag to his chest. "Such a nice lady, I do hope Sarah likes my little surprise Clarissa told me she likes oranges. Has she tried this brand? Oh maybe I should try one; no they're for Sarah I really shouldn't."

A short man in a long leather coat and trilby hat steps in front of Jeremy. "Excuse me my good man, I couldn't help but notice you have a trace of a British accent as you were talking to yourself."

"Oh that's right, I'm from England."

"You are here for the Olympic Games no doubt?"

"Yes, I've popped over with two friends of mine."

"Tell me my English friend have you noticed the terrible influence the Jew has on your fine Parliament?"

"Oh I don't care for politics; it's all a bit of a waste of time if you ask me."

"Why don't you come to a meeting tonight? Perhaps you can listen to Herr Flick talking?"

Jeremy shook his head slowly. "Well I'm not sure, the Doctor mentioned something about going to see a chap about an interview for my friend Sarah, I think they need me to take some pictures."

"No problem my friend, we have meetings every night. The times and places are on this pamphlet."

"Okay, thank you very much. I'd better be going; Sarah is going to love the surprise I have for her. Oranges are her favourite you see."

"Of course, good day my English friend."

The Fringelllian power source is emanating from a damaged engine. The Doctor may offer to aid these aliens or he could be forced to assist them against his will if one of his companions were threatened.

The number of Fringellians on Earth is unknown and of no consequence other than as an indicator that I must take extreme precautions not to allow Time Lord secrets to fall into their possession.

A cursory look through the logs of this ship has revealed very little information other than that they intend to conquer the Earth. As this is not a part of the established narrative history of this planet there is no reason to alert the High Council and warn the Doctor. Instead I will leave these files decrypted to allow him immediate access to these facts.

A bio-spectral scan has located the human female Ms Sarah Jane Smith. I have departed the Fringelllian compound to trail Ms Smith.

Sarah Jane Smith shook hands with the blonde haired deputy chancellor. "It's so nice to meet you Herr Hess, the Doctor told me that you would be perfect for this interview."

Rudolph Hess smiled at the British journalist. "The Honour is all mine Miss Smith. Such a remarkable scientist the Doctor and quite well respected by the Fuhrer."

"Yes, he told me he had the honour of meeting the Fuhrer once before. Now can you tell me how long the preparations took for the Olympics?"

"We spent almost six months getting everything in order, we had the Olympic village purpose built and afterwards they will be used to house the less well off members of our society."

"That sounds very generous; do you think that the impressive stadium will see much use in the future?"

"Well we hope so; we hope to get the nomination for the 1942 football world cup."

"Now can we talk about the young and handsome deputy Fuhrer? Do you see your role growing over the next few years?"

Hess shook his head. "I just hope the amount of paperwork goes down a little Miss Smith!"

"Well thank you very much for squeezing me into your schedule at such short notice Herr Hess."

"Oh Please, call me Rudolph, Miss Smith." He kissed her hand before she left.

The Doctor raised his glass and looked at its amber contents. "Adolph my dear chap this is positively a most noble sherry."

Adolph Hitler nodded in agreement and smiled before taking a drink himself. "Ja, Ja only the best for my English guest. Tell me Doctor Smith, what do you think of the magnificent splendour of these Olympic Games?"

"Well I must say that they're very well organised, a tribute to German organisational skills."

"Ja, when we set about doing something then it gets done."

"I couldn't help but notice however that some of your subordinates seem a little peaky, the stress of such organisation must have gotten to them."

"They are such dedicated man, willing to make many sacrifices for the greater glory of the Fatherland."

"All the same I think it would be very wise to give them a few days off, so that they can enjoy the Games. Such loyalty as theirs deserves a reward no doubt?"

"Good thinking Herr Smith, I will mull your suggestion over. You understand the chain of command very well I think."

"Yes, well I know a few people in the British military. They often complain about the responsibility of command and not finding the time to relax."

They continued talking and drinking alcohol for a few more hours before the Doctor left and I followed him.

I followed the Doctor and he headed straight towards the hotel where Ms Smith was resting, along the way he met up with Mr Fitzoliver.

The Doctor rolled his eyes before smiling warmly at his approaching companion. "Ah Jeremy, good. I was hoping to run into you, are those oranges?"

Jeremy Fitzoliver nodded eagerly and showed the contents to the Doctor. "Yes, they're Sarah's favourites."

"Are you sure? They don't look very ripe to me in any case. Perhaps I should try one, we don't want Sarah to get food poisoning do we?"

"No, I mean yes, I mean of course Doctor. I don't want Sarah to get poorly because of me."

"No, of course not. Well what did you find out?"

"Not a lot I'm afraid. The security is very good around the place."

"Just as I suspected. Now are you sure those guards looked identical to the ones we saw when we first arrived here?"

"Yes Doctor, right down to the way one of them sneezed. Poor chap, I think he must have had hay fever."

"Then there's not a moment to lose Jeremy, we must talk to Sarah at once. The whole of history is at stake, I just don't know from what yet."

"Oh my, that doesn't sound very good at all."

Duty Log - Controller Hedin

I have located a third temporal anomaly from the planet Earth. The power source has moved. Further information is for classified ears only.

TOP SECRET

Log entry Doctor-8

Acting on intelligence received from Gallifrey I have alighted to the Fringelllian compound. They have indeed moved the damaged spaceship engine, however its signature was easy to detect and I have traced it to a new location.

The Fringelllian Director saluted his subordinate. "Can we be sure that this position is secure?"

The second Fringelllian nodded. "Yes Director, this base of operations is totally secured."

A third Fringellian appeared suddenly. "Director, there is someone approaching."

"It is our human contact. I asked him to join us here for one last, special duty."

Claus Kreiner nervously made his way over to the three officers. "Ah Colonel Klink, such a great pleasure as always."

"You have the report I asked for Claus?"

"Of course, but why do you need the plans for the Olympic Stadium?"

"You've never asked questions before Claus? Why all the sudden interest in our affairs?"

"I was just wondering if there was someplace I shouldn't be on a certain day."

The disguised Fringellian officer smiled and put his arm around the human's shoulder. "Claus, you worry too much. I promise you all your worries are now over."

"What do you mean?"

"My two colleagues here have never tried human yet, I must say that your species is really rather delicious."

"No, keep away from me." Claus turned to run as two of the soldiers resumed their normal appearance - six-foot tall gecko-like humanoids with razor sharp claws and teeth. They knocked him down and began to feast eagerly.

"Try not to get blood on the carpet, human is so difficult to get out of it."

Once the creatures had devoured the human traitor I left to return to the hotel where the Doctor and his two friends were located.

Sarah Jane Smith looked at her best friend. "What does this mean Doctor? I thought we came here so I could interview a few of the Olympic athletes.  Maybe a few of the male swimmers?"

"Goodness gracious me no," the Doctor replied. "That's the sort of thing they frown upon. No, I just thought we could take a nice relaxing break and watch the Olympics first hand."

Jeremy Fitzoliver looked at Sarah and the Doctor. "What about all those photographs I've been taking with my camera? I've got some super pictures of buildings. There's one of that chap Sarah interviewed yesterday and there's one of the chap you went to meet last night Doctor. I say he does look awfully familiar, I wonder where I've seen him before."

"I take it the holiday's off then Doctor?" Sarah hugged a hotel pillow to her stomach.

"Not necessarily Sarah, we just have to investigate these strange goings on. There's something very wrong here Sarah, every fibre of my being tells me history is going to be changed and we must stop it."

"I say can we though?" Jeremy asked. "We don't even know what's going on for sure. All we know is that there are a group of German soldiers operating on their own agenda and those strange energy emissions the TARDIS picked up when we landed."

"Luckily I remembered this." The Doctor pulled something made up of a small bundle of spare parts and wires out of his jacket pocket.

"What on Earth is that contraption Doctor?" Sarah laughed as the Doctor fiddled with his gadget.

"It's not from Earth Sarah; it's a Venusian energy detection device. I built something similar a couple of years ago, this is the best I could do with the primitive technology of this time."

"Will it help find what we're looking for Doctor?"

"I hope so Jeremy. Once we can take a proper sample of the energy waves then I might be able to identify who or what's behind them."

"Couldn't it be something from this time? I read somewhere that the Germans did a lot of experiments with radioactive materials."

"That's not all they did experiments with," Sarah added with a gloomy tone of voice.

"Yes, well we can't let the future affect our sensibilities Sarah, no interfering remember? We can't change the history of Earth not even if we think it's the right thing to do."

"Why did you bring me then?"

"You followed me into the TARDIS with Jeremy and refused to leave until I proved once and for all that I can travel anywhere in time."

"Well I believe you Doctor, first Parakon and now pre-war Germany."

"Thank you Jeremy, it's nice to see one of you using your intelligence for a change."

"Hey," Sarah objected strongly.

"No offence Sarah, but I'd have thought you'd have accepted the facts when we got involved with Irongron and his rather angry associates."

Sarah stood up and slowly walked around the room. "Yes, but I need proof if I'm to sell the story to Clarissa."

"You've been using my trust to write a story about me? Behind my back? With Jeremy as your co-conspirator no doubt."

"This is the first thing I've heard about it Doctor. You told me these pictures were for your scrapbook Sarah."

"Well the clippings of my story would look nice in a scrapbook. This story will win me the Booker prize for sure."

"You mean to say you'd publish a story about me? The Brigadier would have a seizure if he were here right now. The public just aren't ready to hear such things Sarah. Believe me, they'd just bury their hands in the sand like ostriches. How else do you think UNIT have been so successful at ensuring such things don't find their way into the press?"

"You can't stop the news Doctor and this is news."

"No and neither was the Cybermen invasion on 1969. The world won't listen to you Sarah, it will ignore you or worse it will react against you for upsetting their feelings of safety and security."

"They must be told the truth."

"What truth?" the Doctor asked. "Who would believe a wild fantasy tale about a white haired man who travels through time and space in a police telephone box? Truth is only what people decide it should be, not what others force them to believe. Take away a persons right to choose and you'll end up no better than that chap you met yesterday evening. The people of Earth are no more ready in your time than they are now. Even when they are ready such knowledge must not be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. An unscrupulous man might plunder the riches of time rather than simply be content to wander through them and enjoy them for what they are."

Sarah tutted. "You always turn everything into a lecture Doctor."

"Sometimes Sarah Jane, but only sometimes."

Jeremy picked the Doctor's device up off of the bed. "Look you two, this gizmo is moving about."

"Don't drop that Jeremy, hand it to me. We can follow the trail and stop anything happening before it happens. Oh my, this is not good news, it's a Fringellian signature. This is terrible news, the Fringellians are utterly ruthless and without any mercy what so ever. This would explain those duplicate soldiers however; they can change their appearances at will."

Jeremy asked the obvious question. "What's one of these Fringellian chaps then?"

"Try to imagine a six-foot tall gecko with razor sharp claws and teeth and an insatiable appetite for raw flesh. They're highly intelligent too, most predator species are. When it comes to barbaric savagery their only competitors are Daleks, Cybermen and Humans."

"I say, that's a bit much isn't it? I'm harmless."

"I think the Doctor is referring to what's going to happen in the next few years."

"Earth's past, present and future is one long sorry account of warfare and barbarism Sarah Jane, often the word progress only means better ways of killing more and more people. There's hope for your species however, why else would I spend so much time trying to defend it while its still in its infancy?"

Report ends.

Log entry Doctor-10

Having followed the Doctor and his two associates to the Fringellian base I took up a safe vantage point to watch the ensuing confrontation.

The Doctor looked at the screen and shook his head in disgust. "Look at these files; the Fringellians intend to take over the Earth by impersonating German soldiers."

"Can we stop them?" Sarah asked.

"I'm not sure Sarah, there must be a way though. I'm sure the Time Lords have manoeuvred me into this somehow."

"Why would your own people do that Doctor?" Jeremy asked.

"So that they don't get their own hands dirty of course Jeremy. They'd rather use me to carry out their own agenda than get involved themselves."

Sarah looked around. "Well you can disrupt their computer though can't you? Use a magnet on their spools of magnetic tape or something."

"This is a considerably more advanced machine Sarah, although I'm sure it's rather similar to Windows in many respects."

Jeremy looked up suddenly. "I think someone's coming this way."

The Fringellian Director approached the three puny Earthlings. "Get away from that computer."

"It's too late, I've input a series of self-extracting viruses into your system." The Doctor looked abrasively at the disguised Fringellian. "Not a bad piece of work if I do say so myself. In a matter of seconds it will be completely useless."

The Director reached for his weapon. "Then you shall die for your meddling!"

"What's that behind you?" The Doctor rushed forward and landed a heavy Venusian Karate chop on the Fringellian leader's neck. "Hai-ya!"

Jeremy applauded. "I say Doctor, that was very impressive."

"Look out, there's more of them over there!" Sarah pointed at the other Fringellians.

The Doctor picked up the Fringellian handgun and aimed it at the large reactor of the damaged engine. "Stand back, if I hit that reactor just right I can reverse the polarity of the neutron flow and cause an overload in the blessed thing. The whole place will implode in a negative detonation."

I departed the scene and headed to a place of safety. I waited a few hours before returning to the site. The external shell of the building remained intact but everything inside of it had been annihilated in the implosion.

Report ends.

Log entry Doctor-11

Only one Fringellian survived, a scout who was at the previous location. Using simple transmat technology I removed the creature from the planet to ensure no changes to the continuum.

I spotted the Doctor and his companions as they made their way back to their dilapidated type 40 TT Capsule.

The Doctor put his hand on his companion's shoulder. "Cheer up Jeremy; it's not every day you get to meet important historical figures."

Jeremy shook his head. "But they're convicted war criminals Doctor, responsible for the deaths of millions."

"But that hasn't happened yet Jeremy."

"What the Doctor is trying to say is that they haven't committed any of those crimes yet Jeremy."

Jeremy looked at Sarah. "Well that's just splitting hairs Sarah, I don't think I want to come along on any more of these sorts of adventures if it's all the same Doctor."

"Well I'm sorry to hear that Jeremy, I thought your mind was more open than Sarah's." The Doctor opened the TARDIS doors.

"Thanks a lot Doctor," Sarah muttered at the Doctor's back.

"Well we had better be getting back, the Brigadier will be wondering where we've gone to." The Doctor waited until his two companions were inside the TARDIS before following them inside.

I departed Earth shortly afterwards and returned back to Gallifrey.

Final report

Having observed the actions of the renegade known as the Doctor, it is recommended that his activities be monitored on a semi-regular basis. He has shown a few instances of our non-intervention policy but his wanderings are of concern.

It may be possible to keep using the Doctor as our agent when the greater good must prevail, however we cannot rely on him all of the time due to his misplaced sense of morality. One such event may be required shortly; a Dalek induced plague is threatening human colonies in Earth's future. It may be necessary to nudge the Doctor into the middle of these events.
